Soubin Shahir claims he was at police station for questioning, not arrested in Manjummel Boys financial fraud case

Actor and producer Soubin Shahir appeared before police in Kochi on Tuesday for questioning in connection with a financial fraud case linked to the hit Malayalam film Manjummel Boys. After questioning at the Maradu police station, Soubin told reporters that he provided all the documents sought by investigators and also submitted his mobile phone on time. Soubin Shahir both starred in and produced Chidambaram's Manjummel Boys. Soubin Shahir clarifies news of arrest in financial fraud case On Tuesday, news broke that Soubin, along with his father Babu Shahir and Shawn Anthony, had been arrested and released on bail. However, Soubin denied that he had been arrested, claiming he had been at the police station for questioning. According to PTI, he said, 'I believe the investigators are now convinced by the facts. Let them examine the documents and take a decision.' Police sources, however, confirmed that Soubin was granted conditional bail by the Kerala High Court, as per PTI, explaining why his arrest was not recorded. The financial fraud case involving Manjummel Boys team Soubin was interrogated in connection with a complaint filed by Siraj Valiyathura, who alleged that the producers promised a 40 per cent profit share over his ₹7 crore investment during the production of Manjummel Boys. As per the court's order, Maradu police are continuing their investigation and have submitted a report to the HC. The report alleges that the accused conspired to cheat the complainant. According to an Asianet report, the court had directed that the actor be present for questioning while granting anticipatory bail. The court also directed that the accused should not be questioned in custody and should be released on bail if arrested. The HC rejected the producers' request to quash the case and turned down the police's request to question them in custody. According to Sacnilk, Manjummel Boys made ₹240.5 crore worldwide. It is the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024 and the second highest-grossing Malayalam film ever after Prithviraj Sukumaran's Mohanlal-starrer L2 Empuraan. With inputs from PTI

‘L2 Empuraan is where it began': Producer blames Mohanlal film for issues with CBFC over Janaki vs State of Kerala

Even as Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi's Janaki vs State of Kerala struggles to get certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) due to disagreement over the film's title, producer G Suresh Kumar chimed in to give his two cents. Talking to the press, as per a Manorama Online report, the filmmaker blamed Prithviraj Sukumaran's hit Mohanlal-starrer L2 Empuraan for all these issues. Mohanlal in a still from Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2 Empuraan. L2 Empuraan to be blamed for Janaki vs State of Kerala's issues? Producer Suresh reportedly told the press that the controversy surrounding L2 Empuraan after its release made the censor board hyper-vigilant. 'Empuraan had to be recensored due to the controversy. That's when the censor board became more cautious. That's why this problem has arisen; everything began from there,' he said. Given that the issue is now in the Kerala High Court, he called it a 'powerful institution' and said, 'The court looks whether the name should be mentioned or not. The court can intervene 100 per cent. In my opinion, there will be a favourable verdict. Let the court watch the movie and take the decision,' he added. Incidentally, Suresh Gopi had spoken about the L2 Empuraan controversy in the parliament. He has yet to address the issues faced by his film. The controversy surrounding CBFC and JVSK After the CBFC reportedly denied certification to the film over the name Janaki, an iteration of Goddess Sita in the title, the producers J Phanindra Parameswaran and Sethuraman Nair Kankol filed a petition at the HC challenging the decision. Last week, according to PTI, the court said it would watch the film starring Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in the lead roles on 5 July at 10 AM before deciding if the name should be changed. A hearing will be held on 9 July. During the hearing, the CBFC sought more time to file its reply affidavit. The court said it cannot unnecessarily extend the time to file a reply. The court had asked the Board the week before that to submit in writing the decision of its revising committee regarding the movie, which has not yet been certified for public viewing due to the name of its titular character -- Janaki. The Pravin Narayanan-directed film revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state.

JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala row: K.C. Venugopal slams Suresh Gopi's silence

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Thursday (July 3, 2025) strongly criticised the censor board for denying clearance to the film JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala and hit out at Union Minister Suresh Gopi, who plays the lead role, for staying silent on the matter. According to sources, the film was denied certification because the name 'Janaki' – another name for goddess Sita — was used for the lead character, a woman fighting a legal battle after being assaulted. "We've heard actor and Union Minister Suresh Gopi say many times that cinema is his lifeblood – like rice is to daily sustenance. Yet, even as a system he is part of throws mud onto that very rice, he remains silent," Mr. Venugopal wrote in a Facebook post. The Alappuzha MP urged Mr. Gopi, an actor-turned politician, to break his silence and speak up for his own film and for his fellow artistes. Mr. Venugopal accused the censor board of attacking artistic freedom. "The stance taken by the censor board sets fire to the very foundation of freedom of expression," he said. "In cinema and literature, creators have the constitutional freedom to choose titles and names. Denying that is an insult to the Constitution itself," he said. Mr. Venugopal pointed out that names such as Ram, Krishna, Sita, and Radha have been used for decades in Indian films, and many popular movies have carried similar names. "Most personal names in India come from Hindu mythology," he said, adding that the Congress governments never allowed the censor board to act in ways that undermined its credibility. He expressed full support for the film and its makers. "Every censor board member who imposed cuts in the name of narrow-minded politics should study the Constitution and the country's history," the Congress leader said. Venugopal also raised concerns over the larger trend. "Even the Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan had to undergo cuts after being screened in theatres," he said. 'Declared agenda' "Where is the BJP taking this country? What kind of fear is forcing artistes to censor their own creations?" Mr. Venugopal asked and demanded that the Central government and the departments concerned clearly state their position. "The government's continued silence, even after the matter reached the courts, is suspicious," he said. "This appears to be a declared agenda – controlling food, clothing, names, and now even art," the AICC general secretary alleged. Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday said it would watch the film on July 5 before deciding on the censor board's demand to change the name 'Janaki'.
