Unemployed man fined RM3,000 for possession of drugs

KUCHING (July 21): The Magistrates' Court here today fined an unemployed man RM3,000, in default eight months' imprisonment, for possessing 4.10 grammes of methamphetamine, a dangerous drug.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali imposed the sentence on Mohd Al Iqbal Arfan, 25, after he pled guilty to a charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.
The section provides for a fine of up to RM100,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
The offence took place around 6.30pm on July 19, 2024, at a parking lot in front of an electrical supply store at Synergy Square, Jalan Matang.
According to the facts of the case, a police team approached Mohd Al Iqbal on suspicion of drug possession and conducted a search, during which they discovered a transparent plastic packet containing crystal-like substances inside his zippered bag.
They seized the items, and the accused was taken to the Padawan District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for further action.
A subsequent chemistry report later confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine, weighing 4.10 grammes.
The prosecution was conducted by prosecuting officer ASP Arman Ibrahim, while the accused was represented by lawyer Osman Ibrahim.
