Former surveyor charged with abusing position for RM150k contract
KUALA TERENGGANU: A former quantity surveyor at the Dungun Municipal Council was charged today in the Sessions Court for allegedly abusing his position to secure a RM150,000 contract for his parents' company. Mohammad Hanif Ahmad, 41, denied the charge under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The offence was linked to a 2019 animal shelter project in Taman Rimba, Bandar Bukit Bauk. Judge Mohd Azhar Othman granted bail at RM6,000 with conditions, including monthly MACC reporting and passport surrender. The case will next be mentioned on July 29 for document submission.

Mohammad Hanif Ahmad, 41, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge before Judge Mohd Azhar Othman. He is charged with using his position as a member of the Tender and Quotation Evaluation Committee by recommending Yusha Timur Business, a company owned by his parents, for a work contract, worth RM150,000, involving the construction of an animal shelter at Taman Rimba, Bandar Bukit Bauk in Dungun, six years ago.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A former quantity surveyor at the Dungun Municipal Council was charged in the Sessions Court here with abusing his position to obtain gratification. Mohammad Hanif Ahmad, 41, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge before judge Mohd Azhar Othman on Monday (June 30). He is charged with using his position as a member of the tender and quotation evaluation committee by recommending a company owned by his parents for a work contract worth RM150,000. The job involved the construction of an animal shelter at Taman Rimba, Bandar Bukit Bauk in Dungun six years ago. The offence was allegedly committed in April and May 2019 at the Dungun Municipal Council office. The charge, under Section 23 (1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. The court allowed Hanif bail of RM6,000 with one surety and also ordered him to report to the nearest MACC office every month, not to intimidate witnesses, and to surrender his passport. Ex-HR manager jailed one day, fined for abusing position to solicit bribe
KUALA TERENGGANU: A former administration and human resources manager at Ladang Rakyat Terengganu Sdn Bhd was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM22,143 by the Sessions Court here today for abusing his position to solicit a bribe of RM4,428.60. Judge Mohd Azhar Othman meted out the punishment after Shahrizal Ridzuan Ambak, 48, pleaded guilty to the charge. The court ordered Shahrizal Ridzuan to begin serving his jail sentence today. According to the charge sheet, he was accused of abusing his position by supplying SIM cards, worth RM4,428.60, to 117 Indian farm workers at Ladang Rakyat Terengganu, Cheneh, near Kemaman, between July and September 2022. Shahrizal Ridzuan had a vested interest in the transaction, as the SIM card supplier was his son. The charge was framed under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides for a prison term of up to 20 years, and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. MACC prosecuting officer Nur Mahirah Mohd Fauzi appeared for the prosecution, while Shahrizal Ridzuan was represented by lawyer Mohd Hazwan Hamidun.

Police inspector charged with accepting RM23,000 bribe to free drug suspects
KUALA TERENGGANU: A police inspector pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of receiving RM23,000 in bribes to release three men linked to a drug case four years ago. The accused, Khairul Faiz Mohamad Zaini, 37, entered the plea after two charges were read before Judge Mohd Azhar Othman. According to the charges, he is accused of receiving bribes amounting to RM15,000 and RM8,000 from an individual via transfers into a third party's account before the money was moved into his wife's account. The payment was allegedly in exchange for releasing three individuals who had been detained, and for removing syabu (methamphetamine) from the police arrest report related to a raid and arrest operation. The offence was said to have been committed at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Office, Terengganu police contingent headquarters, on Feb 26, 2021. For the offence, the accused was charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides for a prison term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Following the recorded plea of not guilty, the court set June 18 for mention of the case and appointment of counsel. The court also allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM7,000 for both charges. Additional conditions imposed include a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses, surrendering his international passport to the court, and reporting monthly to the MACC office. The prosecution was led by MACC deputy public prosecutor Rabiatul Addawiah Mohd Noorlee, while the accused was unrepresented.
