Indonesia Urges Safer Hiking After Tourist Death On Rinjani
By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, June 28 (Bernama) -- Indonesia's Tourism Ministry has urged visitors to Mount Rinjani National Park in West Nusa Tenggara to use only licensed operators and certified guides when undertaking extreme activities such as hiking. The appeal follows the death of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 26, who fell while trekking in the park on June 21. Her body was found four days later at a depth of around 600 metres, but poor weather and difficult terrain delayed recovery efforts until June 25. bootstrap slideshow Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has called on all visitors to strictly observe safety protocols and avoid venturing off designated trails. 'Report any breaches of standard operating procedures immediately via WhatsApp at +62 811-895-6767,' she said in a statement, adding that tourist safety is a shared responsibility. The minister described the incident as a tragic reminder of the serious risks associated with extreme tourism, and said it should serve as a turning point in the enforcement of safety standards. 'This incident reminds us that every extreme tourism destination carries significant risk,' she added. The fatal fall comes just weeks after a Malaysian climber died on the same mountain in early May after plunging roughly 80 metres into a ravine. Mount Rinjani, an active volcano standing 3,726 metres above sea level, is one of Indonesia's most popular hiking destinations, attracting thousands of adventurers each year.

Indonesia's Whoosh High-Speed Rail Exceeds 10 Mln Passengers
By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Indonesia's Jakarta–Bandung high-speed train, locally known as Whoosh, has carried more than 10 million passengers since its commercial launch in October 2023, the train operator said on Thursday. PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) said the milestone was reached between Oct 17, 2023 and June 25, 2025, with 10,014,707 passengers recorded across 29,786 journeys. bootstrap slideshow 'This figure reflects strong public enthusiasm for Whoosh,' said KCIC general manager for corporate secretary, Eva Chairunisa, in a statement. She said passenger uptake had been aided by transport integration efforts, including links to feeder trains, the Greater Jakarta LRT, bus services, and taxis. Eva cited a finding from a study by the University of Indonesia's research centre that the train emits 6.9 grammes of CO₂ per passenger-kilometre, compared to 12.7 grammes from private vehicles. The train has also helped reduce carbon emissions by up to 54 per cent, while potentially saving approximately 2.91 billion rupiah (about US$180,000) per year in traffic accident-related costs, she added. The Whoosh high-speed rail project began in 2015, with construction starting in 2016. It entered service in 2023, making Indonesia the first country in Southeast Asia to operate a high-speed rail network. The project is part of a broader infrastructure push backed by Chinese investment under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.

Malaysia Promotes Higher Education In Jakarta Via MyEduTour 2025
By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has embarked on a promotional effort in Jakarta aimed at attracting more Indonesian students to further their studies at institutions of higher learning in Malaysia – and in the process, forging stronger people-to-people relations in both countries. The MyEduTour: Discovery Malaysia 2025 programme, organised by Education Malaysia Indonesia (EMI) — which is the official representative of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia — along with Tourism Malaysia Jakarta and the Malaysian Embassy, was held at the embassy ground. bootstrap slideshow The Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Mohamed Hasrin Tengku Hussin, said the initiative was part of the country's soft diplomacy effort featuring five public institutions of higher education, five private institutions of higher education, and a travel agency offering travel packages based around education. 'It is hoped that this programme may contribute to closer exchanges between Malaysians and Indonesians and forge stronger societal ties,' he said, adding that some 11,000 Indonesian students are currently enrolled in study programmes in Malaysia. The programme combines education and tourism for Indonesians and is in line with Malaysia's effort to become a regional hub for higher education. The embassy's Minister Counsellor (Education), Hasnul Faizal Hushin Amri, said the platform enables universities in Malaysia to offer academic programmes through interaction sessions and educational visit packages. 'The seminar provided detailed information on the programmes on offer, and this helped educators and representatives of universities to make the best choices for their students,' he said. MyEduTour is an ongoing effort to strengthen cooperation in education and tourism based on long-standing cultural and historical relations between Malaysia and Indonesia, he added.
