Recently Unearthed Kota Melaka Alignment Will Be Preserved
MELAKA, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM) has assured that the area where a historic structure was discovered, and believed to be part of the old Melaka Fort bastion situated in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site zone, will be preserved. Its general manager, Erne Hamsah, gave this assurance following the construction of a car park in front of Muzium Istana Melaka in Bandar Hilir, which was previously categorised as Taman Larangan (Forbidden Park). "Conservation work has already started with the appointment of conservators and archaeologists to carry out studies at the excavation site, while the parking lot construction, supervised by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), is being reorganised following the discovery of the historic structure. "We will indeed preserve (the site) because among the structures identified is the old bastion that is important in the history of Melaka's defence. "We are also reviewing how the monument can be revealed to visitors without affecting the stability of the structure, seeing that there are many factors that need to be taken into account, including the environmental elements such as erosion and physical damage,' she said. She told reporters this after the "Warisan Santai' Programme of the 17th Melaka World Heritage City anniversary celebration in conjunction with the Duyong state constituency's 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Duyong, Hang Tuah Village here today, which was officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Elaborating on the car park project being developed, she said that only some of the alignments involved with the archaeological structures will be temporarily halted. 'Construction work on the parking lot will continue, but only certain alignments will be stopped for now, namely areas where the old city structure has been identified, while the rest will continue without affecting the heritage area. "PERZIM is also preparing the plans and the next measures to be presented to the state government,' she said.

Two Melaka neighbourhoods picked for climate-risk action plan
TWO neighbourhoods under the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), namely Kampung Morten and Pantai Peringgit, have been selected for a community action plan. The plan aims to enhance resilience to climate risks, such as heatwaves, floods and address the lack of safe public spaces. Deputy state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said the plan was the result of collaborative research and engagement efforts, including discussions, workshops, risk assessments and participation from various levels of the community since 2023. 'Among the initial high-impact projects under this plan is the repainting of the Pantai Peringgit apartment building using heat-reflective paint technology, which can help reduce indoor temperatures, create a more comfortable living environment and save energy. 'In addition, the installation of environmental heat sensors is also planned, to allow real-time temperature monitoring and to support rapid response efforts by both the authorities and local community,' he told Bernama. Earlier, he launched the plan under the Urban Climate Resilience Programme (UCRP) for Community, which was attended by Melaka mayor Datuk Shahdan Othman. Mohd Noor Helmy said that the plan was developed through collaboration between MBMB, Resilient Cities Network, Z Zurich Foundation and Zurich Malaysia under the UCRP. He said the plan also focused on community education initiatives, including disaster preparedness training, climate change-themed murals and proposals for the development of 'pocket parks' – small green spaces in urban areas designed to enhance the local social and ecological environment. 'This approach allows us to identify not only the challenges faced by residents, but also their aspirations and the most suitable solutions. 'It also serves as a guideline and marks the beginning of a broader ongoing effort.'

Duyong Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, who also serves as the deputy chairman of the State Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Communications Committee, stated that the upgrades aim to attract more tourists. The state is collaborating with the Melaka International College of Science and Technology (MiCoST) to develop a Roblox video game based on the Hang Tuah Village concept. This initiative targets younger generations as part of promotional efforts. Additional reforms include new programmes such as weekly silat training and demonstrations by local associations. A 'cakar ayam' crafting demo and 'sukan rakyat' events will also be held every Sunday. Online scams in Melaka rack up RM39mil in losses since January
JASIN: Online scams in Melaka have racked up losses amounting to RM39 million across 1,159 cases from January until July 1. Deputy State Exco for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, said police reports from the Melaka police headquarters showed that the highest losses stemmed from fraudulent online investment schemes. "Based on the reports received, some cases recorded losses exceeding RM1 million, with victims lured by promises of high returns. "Even professionals have not been spared. "Despite continuous awareness efforts, many still fall for the syndicates' sweet promises of quick returns and high profits. "This reflects not only greed and irrationality but also a lack of understanding about the nature of cyber fraud," he told reporters after launching the Jasin Cybercrime and Infra Communication Safety Awareness Campaign. Also present were Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) head of Regional and State Coordination Datuk Mohd Shafie Harun. Organised by MCMC in collaboration with Melaka police, the programme was held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat initiative for the Bemban state constituency. Mohd Noor Helmy said the state government, MCMC and the police are stepping up cybersecurity education to raise public awareness of increasingly sophisticated scam tactics. He warned that cybercrime and financial fraud continue to rise each year, posing a serious threat to public safety and the state's economy. Criminals, he added, are becoming increasingly sophisticated, employing tactics such as fake calls, scam messages, phishing links and impersonating government officials. Meanwhile, Zulkairi said 650 cybercrime-related arrests have been made in the state so far this year. In response to the growing threat, he said Melaka police have taken the initiative to hold awareness forums to educate the public on the dangers of cybercrime and how to protect themselves. "These programmes help the public understand the modus operandi of cybercriminals, recognise the signs of digital fraud and identify official channels for verification and reporting. "Besides fake investment schemes, other commonly reported scams include undelivered online purchases, phishing websites and fraudulent wedding invitation links designed to steal personal information," he said. — BERNAMA
