After Perlis internal poll shocks, Hashim Jasin warns PAS leaders not to chase posts but restore party unity
KANGAR, June 27 – PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin has reportedly urged party leaders who were defeated in the recent divisional polls to remain committed to the party's cause and not withdraw from its activities. He said unity must be prioritised after the internal contests, and those who lost should not harbour resentment but support the new leadership and continue contributing to the Islamist party's struggle. 'We must remember that after the elections, the main task is to restore unity, and if there are any rifts, we must return to the fold. Our real opponents are not those we contested against in the election — they are our comrades. 'I sincerely hope that our goal is not to seek fame or higher positions through victory, but to uphold the trust that has been given,' he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia. Hashim also reminded those elected that their positions carry responsibilities and that they were entrusted by party delegates to support both the party and its grassroots. The recent divisional election in Arau saw a major upset when Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli lost his post as division chief. Several other key state leaders, including the State Assembly Speaker and executive councillors, also failed to secure positions in their respective divisions. Hashim said the party must remain the guiding force behind the state government, in line with decisions made during last year's PAS annual assembly. He stressed that PAS should be involved not only in shaping government policies but also in influencing key appointments.

40,000 Catfish Fish Fry Released In Timah Tasoh To Boost Recreational Fishing In Perlis
PADANG BESAR, June 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 40,000 baung (catfish) fish fry were released into the Timah Tasoh Freshwater Fish Sanctuary near here today, as part of ongoing initiatives to strengthen the recreational fishing sector and ensure sustainable resources in Perlis. Perlis Agriculture, Plantation and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said that apart from preserving local fishery resources, it is to add economic value for residents through recreational activities such as net-fishing and angling. "This initiative can become an attraction for anglers and outsiders who come here. Recreational activities can also boost income for the surrounding communities," he said at the fish fry release programme today. The initiative was officiated by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli and also attended by Perlis Fisheries director Mohammed Roshaizat Mustaffa. Meanwhile, Razali said the state thanked the federal government for providing an additional allocation of RM2 million, bringing the total allocation to RM5.8 million for this year for the benefit of the agriculture sector in Perlis. Meanwhile, Roshaizat said the release of the baung fry maintains the native fish population in the area as well as rebalancing the ecosystem affected by the presence of invasive fish species. 'Among the invasive fish species identified as disrupting the ecosystem are peacock bass and humpback (bongkok) fish. These fish reproduce quickly and consume the eggs of local fish, negatively impacting the population of native fish such as baung, temperas and patong. 'We have also carried out awareness programmes with the community and university students to catch these invasive fishes, but the impact is still being monitored as the reproduction rate of these fishes is very fast,' he said. He also reminded the public not to arbitrarily release any fish species into rivers or lakes without permission from the Fisheries Department, as legal action could be taken according to the Perlis River Fisheries Rules in Perlis.

Berjaya Land, Impianan Utara team up for rare earth, hybrid grass and durian ventures in Perlis
KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Land Bhd has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Impianan Utara Sdn Bhd to jointly explore and develop two economic initiatives in Perlis – the mining of rare earth elements and other minerals, and the planting of Napier hybrid grass and Blackthorn durian. Both projects will be carried out in collaboration with Menteri Besar Incorporated Perlis (MBI Perlis), the state's investment vehicle. Berjaya Corporation Bhd founder and adviser Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun said the projects are expected to spur job creation and downstream opportunities for Perlis. 'We can start by creating around 100 jobs. Over time, with the addition of facilities like small-scale factories for processing and end-product development, we could employ a few hundred more,' he said in a press conference after the MoU signing ceremony held at Berjaya Times Square Hotel today, which was attended by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli. The MoU was signed by Tan, Berjaya Land Bhd Group CEO Syed Ali Shahul Hameed, Impianan Utara executive director Datuk Syed Tajul Arif Syed Baharoon Al Jumlud and COO Lukman Mahmood. Under the collaboration, Berjaya Land and Impianan Utara will undertake exploration and development activities for rare earth elements and other strategic minerals within Perlis. Impianan Utara has secured the necessary state-level approval through its partnership with MBI Perlis. The initiative aligns with Malaysia's ambition to become a globally competitive and environmentally responsible player in the rare earth industry. Perlis is expected to benefit from this development on mining revenue, job creation, and the stimulation of local commercial ecosystems. The project is set to generate sustainable revenues for the state and elevate Perlis into a new era of economic prosperity. In a complementary initiative, Berjaya Land will also collaborate with Impianan Utara on a plantation project involving Napier hybrid grass and premium Blackthorn durian. This joint venture, also in collaboration with MBI Perlis, is designed to strengthen the state's agro-economy by boosting food security, enabling downstream agro-processing, and opening up opportunities for export. Revenue from the plantation projects will be shared with the state through MBI Perlis' arrangement with Impianan Utara, alongside annual lease payments that will contribute to state coffers. Syed Ali shared that this partnership reflects their continued belief in the vast potential of regional development in Malaysia. He said Berjaya Land sees value not just in the projects themselves, but in the positive ripple effects they can bring from creating jobs and attracting investments, to uplifting surrounding communities and promoting knowledge exchange. 'We approach this collaboration with humility and purpose and to contribute meaningfully to the local economy while upholding principles of environmental and operational governance,' he said in a separate statement. Syed Tajul Arif commented that the company's roots in Perlis give a deep understanding of the land's potential. 'We believe we can develop projects that are commercially viable, environmentally responsible, and beneficial to the people. This partnership stands as a symbol of public-private synergy driven by innovation, guided by local insight, and focused on delivering lasting value to the state and its people,' he said. Looking beyond these initial ventures, Berjaya Land and Impianan Utara will explore further collaborative opportunities, including border city development and tourism-related initiatives, leveraging Perlis' strategic location, improving infrastructure, and growing investment appeal.
