Kemumin raid based on credible intelligence, not discrimination

KOTA BHARU: Police have clarified that the recent raid on a private gathering at a homestay in Kemumin was conducted based on valid intelligence and evidence, with no intent of discrimination. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was carried out to maintain public order and safeguard moral values. He said intelligence revealed that invitations to the event, 'Majlis Malam Mesra Komuniti & Santai-Santai' were shared via WhatsApp among a select group, with no involvement from any official body such as an NGO or the Ministry of Health. 'On the day of the event, the Kelantan Police Task Force began surveillance at 5pm and observed around 100 individuals gathering to eat and socialise. The raid was carried out at about 1am to ensure public safety,' he said in a statement last night. He added that 20 individuals at the premises admitted to being part of the gay community. Among them were a man from Perak and a student from a higher education institution in Besut, Terengganu, while the rest were locals from Kelantan. Mohd Yusoff also said that checks on their mobile phones found three individuals in possession of pornographic videos involving same-sex acts. 'All three were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code and pleaded guilty in the Kota Bharu Magistrate's Court on July 20. They were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000,' he said. The raid also uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication at the premises. He advised the public not to spread unverified information and to continue cooperating with authorities to preserve harmony in the state. Yesterday, the Kelantan government reminded all parties to inform local authorities and relevant agencies in advance before organising any events, to avoid confusion, misunderstanding, and negative public perception. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said any event, including health-related programmes, should be conducted properly and in accordance with existing procedures and regulations. - Bernama

Police defend raid as NGOs dispute LGBT event claims

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat today said the raid on a gathering involving over 100 individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community was based on strong evidence. "Let them say what they want, but we the police have the evidence that led to the operation," he said in a brief WhatsApp message to the New Straits Times. Mohd Yusoff's remarks come after a coalition of 31 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals rejected police claims that the mid-June raid targeted a "gay sex party". They insisted that the event was, in fact, a legitimate HIV awareness and health outreach session. In a joint statement yesterday, the coalition dismissed the police's narrative surrounding the raid in Kota Baru last month, which had been widely reported in local media. They said documentation by Justice for Sisters (JFS) clearly contradicted the police's version of events. "Contrary to allegations that it was a 'same-sex sex party', the programme was actually a health event," the statement said. "It provided sexual health and HIV-related information, condoms, and voluntary testing to encourage safer sexual practices." The event, which began at 8pm, included a health talk conducted in collaboration with healthcare providers, including doctors. By midnight, the programme was winding down, although around 20 participants were reportedly still at the venue awaiting their test results. Meanwhile, JFS called on the police to correct misinformation related to the alleged "gay party". "We urge Kelantan police to verify the accuracy of the information shared with the media about the raid on the alleged gay party in June 2025," the group said. "The incident drew swift and discriminatory remarks against LGBT people from both state and non-state actors, fuelling fear of further discrimination, violence and marginalisation." JFS maintained that its own documentation painted a vastly different picture from that presented by police. "Among the key inaccuracies was the allegation that the event was a 'gay sex party' — in reality, it was a health-focused initiative." The statement also clarified that none of the attendees were there to provide sexual services. "Participants were present to access sexual health information and testing. The claim that they paid to attend the event is false — it was a free, community-based health initiative aimed at increasing access to healthcare for marginalised groups." JFS further disputed police claims that the event was promoted on social media. "This too is inaccurate," it added.

Police raid ‘gay party' in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: A total of 20 men were detained during a raid on a bungalow, believed to be the site of a gathering involving homosexual individuals. The raid in Jalan Kemumin here last month raised concerns among authorities about increasingly bold illicit activities being organised behind closed doors. Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was launched based on public tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following a report regarding a so-called 'food party' believed to be aimed at the gay community. 'Initial information indicated that over 100 local men were expected to attend the event. However, when the raid was carried out around 1am, most had already dispersed, and only about 20 individuals remained at the scene,' he told a press conference yesterday, Bernama reported. He added that intelligence reports revealed the event began at night and was intended to continue until morning, with participants required to pay a fee. The event was allegedly promoted via social media platforms. Comm Mohd Yusoff said that during the raid, police discovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication in a room, believed to have been used by the organisers as a store. He said further investigations into the mobile phones of three individuals led to the discovery of recordings containing gay pornographic content. 'Out of the more than 20 individuals detained, only three were charged as they were found in possession of pornographic material on their mobile phones.' He also said there was no evidence of sexual activity at the premises at the time of the raid, and everyone was fully clothed. 'However, the presence of condoms and HIV medication suggests preparations were in place should such activity happen.' He said those involved were in their 20s to 30s and came from various backgrounds, including civil servants. 'This is the first reported gay gathering of its kind in Kelantan, and the police successfully acted to detect and raid the event,' he said. Comm Mohd Yusoff also revealed that some of the participants were found to be HIV positive and were undergoing treatment. While no sexual activity was observed during the raid, he said, the police are treating the matter seriously, as such gatherings could serve as a platform for the spread of immoral activities and increase the risk of disease transmission, particularly HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. 'The police will continue to monitor the movements of such groups, as we are concerned that they are becoming more active and bold.' The police chief also urged members of the public to come forward with any information regarding the planning or promotion of such closed-door events, which are often circulated via social media and instant messaging applications.
