Moheiz Adam, 38, of Cromwell Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to four offences of carrying out a prohibited procedure, four charges of causing unnecessary suffering and one fraud offence of possessing canine passports. He caused suffering to a number of puppies through the act of 'cropping' their ears. Cropping of dogs' ears is illegal in the UK. It causes pain, trauma and potential future health problems for the animals. Moheiz Adam plead guilty to carrying out a prohibited procedure (Image: Newport City Council) Moheiz's mutilation of dogs, including American bullies, was exposed in 2021 by a BBC Wales investigation into the lucrative trade, through a television programme called 'The hidden world of designer dog breeding'. A specialist regional trading standards team, Operation Cabal, launched its own investigation some months later and found social media adverts for Sons of Adam, operated by Adam, showing images of dogs with cropped ears. Eleven dogs were taken from Moheiz's home in total (Image: Newport City Council) Trading standards officers, in partnership with Gwent Police, raided his home and they took away seven American bully puppies and an adult French bulldog because of the poor environmental conditions they were kept in. Three other dogs, two adult male American bullies and a puppy with cropped ears, were also taken away. Moheiz claimed they had been imported but they did not have the required legal documentation. Evidence showed that Abel had been bred by Moheiz, which suggests the dog's ears were cropped while in his care. He was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Moheiz was disqualified from keeping animals for 15 years. He will have to pay £2,000 towards the prosecution costs.

Newport dog breeder mutilated puppies by cutting their ears

Moheiz Adam, 38, of Cromwell Road, Newport was caught as a result of a BBC investigation into his 'lucrative' trade, Cardiff Crown Court was told. The defendant had offered to sell an undercover journalist an American bully breed puppy for £13,000. His illegal activities were shown on a BBC One Wales television programme called 'The hidden world of designer dog breeding' broadcast in 2021. Lee Reynolds, prosecuting, said of the mutilation: 'The defendant knew the procedure was unlawful and would cause suffering. 'He claimed he was a dog whisperer and understood dogs well.' Cutting or cropping ears involves removing part of the ear flap for cosmetic reasons to follow a social media trend. Adam pleaded guilty to fraud by claiming he had imported them from abroad by having fake canine passports. He also admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs. The defendant was prosecuted following a follow-up investigation by Newport council and officers found American Bully puppies at his home. Although Adam had offered to sell a puppy for £13,000 the going price for one was usually between £3,000 and £8,000. 'This was a significant operation,' Mr Reynolds added. 'There was significant planning and it was motivated by personal gain. 'By mutilating the animals, there was a deliberate disregard for their welfare.' The defendant had previous convictions which included possession of drugs, for which he was jailed in France, possession with intent to supply a class B drug, possession of a knife, burglary, drink driving and driving while disqualified. His barrister David Pinnell asked the judge to take into account his client's guilty pleas and the lengthy delay in the case coming to court. 'The defendant has rebuilt his life and wants to put this behind him,' he added. Judge Eugene Egan told Adam: 'You selfishly put your own financial interests over and above the welfare of the dogs. 'You engaged in barbaric acts of cruelty towards them while you were lining your pockets as you treated them in the grotesque way you did.' The defendant, he added, had been undone thanks to "quality investigative journalism". Judge Egan jailed him for 80 weeks but suspended the sentence for two years. The defendant was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Adam was disqualified from keeping animals for 15 years. He will have to pay £2,000 towards the prosecution costs.

He offered to sell the reporter a puppy for £13,000 who would be available from six weeks old. Adam told the reporter he'd "got a guy" and added: "All of my dogs have been done by him". He added: "If any questions are asked, say you bought it from an Irishman, brought from Europe". ‌ Mr Reynolds said: "It was clear Mr Adam was talking about ear mutilation... He knew the procedure was unlawful and he knew it was causing suffering to the dogs but he put profit before the welfare of these animals." Some of the dogs (Image: Newport council ) The defendant also claimed he was a "dog whisperer" and "knew dogs well", and used social media to advertise American Bulldogs with cropped ears. ‌ On July 12, 2022, representatives from Newport Council attended the defendant's home and discovered American Bulldogs, including one with cropped ears, and a pregnant French bulldog. The animals were kept in poor conditions and seized under the Animal Welfare Act. Several documents were found, believed to be signed contracts and relating to the sale of puppies. The defendant said he sold a puppy for a fee between £3,000 and £8,000. ‌ Adam, of Cromwell Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to fraud and causing unnecessary suffering to animals. You engaged in barbaric acts of cruelty of these dogs and unnecessarily caused them pain. "You lined your pockets in a grotesque, cruel and wholly needless way and the welfare of the dogs were ignored because of your avarice." In 2021 an undercover journalist from BBC Wales Investigates contacted Adam, posing as a potential journalist was offered puppies for as much as £13,000, while Adam claimed it was "a shame" ear cropping was illegal in the this, he later offered to have the dog's ears mutilated by someone for an additional said the illegal act could be concealed from the authorities by claiming the cutting had been carried out abroad, and the dog was BBC journalist didn't go through with the sale, and when the Wales Investigates team confronted Adam about his activities, he claimed he was a "dog whisperer". Clive Jones, from Newport council's trading standards team, said: "The BBC investigation was of great value….it indicated that he was doing certain activities." Mr Jones said animal welfare teams later responded to other concerns about Adam's dogs in July 2022 and searched his home in Newport, south terraced house, which he said was in "poor condition", had several dogs inside including one young dog with cropped ears, and seven fraudulent pet passports. "[The pet passports] were for him to hand out to prospective purchasers of the dogs to say this dog has been imported and any mutilation would have been carried out outside of the UK," Mr Jones said. "He had to do that through false documents to try and cover his business model, which was for him to actually arrange the mutilation of those dogs for customers."He knew what he was doing, he was happy to mutilate dogs for his own criminal benefit, to make really masses of money. That's all he was interested in."
