Molly Shannon Says This ‘Talented' 'SNL' Cast Member Replacing Lorne Michaels Would Be an ‘Excellent Idea' (Exclusive)
Molly Shannon, who was an SNL cast member from 1995 to 2001, exclusively told PEOPLE why Lorne Michaels is 'irreplaceable' as the sketch comedy show's showrunner Shannon also discussed longtime cast member Kenan Thompson as a potential successor to Michaels Michaels created SNL 50 years ago in 1975Molly Shannon thinks Lorne Michaels is a 'superstar.' The White Lotus actress, 60, revealed during a PEOPLE in 10 interview why 'Lorne is irreplaceable' as Saturday Night Live's showrunner. 'It's his show, his vision,' Shannon, an SNL cast member from 1995 to 2001, says of Michaels, 80, who created the show in 1975. 'There's no one who could replace him. It would not be the same show,' she continues. 'He's just a one-of-a-kind genius. Brilliant. Smart.' Asked what her thoughts were on longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, 47, stepping in as a potential replacement as showrunner whenever Michaels departs, Shannon sang Thompson's praises. 'I love this idea. He's the greatest — I adore Kenan,' Shannon says of Thompson, a cast member on SNL since 2003. '[Kenan is] so talented. That's an excellent idea,' adds Molly, who famously portrayed SNL character Mary Katherine Gallagher, the awkward Catholic school student who liked to smell her armpits and call herself 'superstar.' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. In May, Thompson hinted at major shakeups for SNL before season 51. 'Especially this year where it feels like there's maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year,' the All That alum told Page Six. 'You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions over the summer … it's always like you want your kids to stay young.' 'You just never know what the future holds,' Thompson, a cast member for 22 seasons, added. "I don't want to be in the way of someone else or I don't want to be the stale old man riding the same thing. That doesn't really happen that much at SNL, but there's no guarantees, I guess.' How I Travel: Molly Shannon Saunas While Her Family Surfs
It's a bit surprising to learn that Molly Shannon of all people spends most of her vacations in surfing hot spots around the world, as she tells Condé Nast Traveler. What's perhaps less unexpected is that this beach bum is really, really polite to flight attendants. "Because I fly Los Angeles to New York a lot on one particular airline, I know a lot of the pilots and attendants. I've gotten to know them,' says the actress. 'I feel like we're all working together, so I say 'Good morning!'' Shannon, who's currently a partner for the supplement Proactive Support from the Makers of Tylenol, chatted about her life in a surf family (her two children are in their early twenties), cowering from monkeys in Bali, and her first-ever first class flight, which was to Budapest. Her priorities when planning a vacation: When I'm traveling for fun, definitely the beach. I love the tropical vacation. That's my favorite. Fun family dinners, reading, relaxing, swimming. I like to keep it simple. What guides their choice of destinations: We're a big Hawaii family and a big surf family. My son and husband are really big surfers and my daughter does it too. I tried it a couple of times years ago, and it's really not my thing—but I appreciate it. Taking a lesson was great. I was like, god, this requires such upper-body strength. I'm proud that I tried it! How she spends her flight time: It's a nice, quiet time to read. Sometimes I download TV shows for the plane, but mostly I read. I'll tear through a book. I don't usually work on planes. Sometimes if I'm on my way to do a job, I have to memorize lines and that's kind of a drag, so I won't do it for more than an hour at a time. The best vacation of her life so far: Bali, Indonesia. My son Nolan surfed Uluwatu. My friend Tamra Davis knows a lot about Bali, so she was like, 'You've got to go here, do this, eat at this restaurant.' It was everything I would have wanted and more—just a wonderful family vacation. We stayed at a hotel that was off-the-charts fantastic. There were so many monkeys trying to get into our room, so we were laughing and videotaping them. Sometimes [my family] would leave to go get breakfast and I'd be swimming in the pool and the monkey would come back around. Oh god, I was scared! But it was a magical vacation, with the best food. I would love to go back to Bali. The most random place she's been recognized: Nothing too weird, but my daughter was doing a semester abroad in Madrid and I felt pretty relaxed there, walking around with a baseball cap or whatever. We were in a [clothing store], and two women were really staring at me while I was shopping. Looking at me like, 'Do I know you?' Maybe they think I'm a school teacher. They were really staring! It took me by surprise.

‘The Office' Star Jenna Fischer Says Getting Fired for Sneaking Into an ‘SNL' Party Was Worth It: ‘I Met Molly Shannon'
Jenna Fischer said a former boss gave her the boot after she lied about being sick so she could attend a 'Saturday Night Live' party. But it all worked out because she was able to meet Molly Shannon. 'I'm a huge 'Saturday Night Live' nerd,' Fischer explained during an appearance on the the 'Fly on the Wall' podcast which Dana Carvey and David Spade co-host. 'The greatest part about being on 'The Office' and being on NBC was that I got to breathe the same air as 'Saturday Night Live' people — that we would have to be at the same corporate parties together. I was a total groupie.' Prior to her days starring on 'The Office,' Fischer worked as a typist, and as part of her job's perks, she was assigned to transcribe TV Critics Association events. If she finished all her work on time, she was free to enjoy the rest of event. An upcoming event just so happened to be one for the hit NBC sketch series, and that's when she started plotting her attendance. 'I started pretending like I didn't feel good, because I was going to make an excuse that I was sick so that I could get off work on time and then sneak into this party,' Fischer said, mentioning that she worked a portion of her workday before leaving her job and switching into her outfit for the night in her car. 'I sneak into the party and I can't even tell you, it was amazing. Norm MacDonald, I'm looking at him in the flesh,' Fischer said. 'I can't, my mind is blown. Then I see Molly Shannon and I think, 'I'm going to do it. I'm going to go say hi to Molly Shannon.'' And her moment happened. 'She looked at me, took me by the shoulders, looked me deep in the eyes and said, 'Don't give up,'' Fisher shared. ''Whatever you do, don't give up. It took me 10 years to get on 'Saturday Night Live,' and my best advice to you is just know it'll happen eventually if you just stick with it.'' In addition to the cast and crew behind 'Saturday Night Live,' there were more people who attended the party that she was familiar with … her boss and all her coworkers. Ultimately, the actress was let go from her job. However, Fischer said it all worked out in the end, as she got to meet Shannon. 'But it was fine, guys, because I met Molly Shannon, and she gave me that advice,' Fischer said, adding that 10 years later, after she had nabbed her role on 'The Office,' she saw Shannon again at the premiere for 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' in 2018. That's where she told Shannon the backstory. 'I got to go up to her and I got to say, 'Molly Shannon, here's this story. You told me, 10 years.' She was like, 'And look! It's 10 years later, and here you are!'' Fischer said of the moment. 'Is that the greatest thing ever?' You can listen to the full 'Fly on the Wall' podcast here. Raising a Glass to Hollywood: An Inside Look at the 2025 SAG Awards After-Party
Following the 31st Annual SAG Awards — where award-winning actors Timothée Chalamet, Molly Shannon, Demi Moore and Kiernan Culkin triumphed — the crème de la crème of Hollywood kept the celebrations going by mingling and sipping specialty cocktails at the official Post-Awards Gala, hosted by PEOPLE and Audi at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall. The stage of the Shrine Auditorium was elegantly transformed into an exquisite fusion of warmth and sophistication — thoughtfully designed by event planner Tony Schubert of Event Eleven — to immerse the crowd in an atmosphere of refined elegance. With rich dark wood trumpet columns, the area was complemented by rust-colored drapery that cascaded beautifully against a backdrop of off-white furniture. Accents of teal and blue ottoman created a harmonious balance of earthy tones and modern vibrancy. It became an intimate night for award-winners and partygoers to remember (unless they had one too many drinks). SAG Gala partygoers sipped on a featured cocktail menu of Redbreast 12YO Irish Whiskey (Redbreast 12YO Old Fashioned), Código 1530 Reposado and Silver Tequila (Código 1530 Perfect Margarita) and Absolut Cosmo martinis, alongside premium spirits from Pernod Ricard USA, including Malfy Gin, MALIBU Original, Del Maguey Vida Mezcal and Jefferson's Bourbon. Internationally acclaimed DJ Michelle Pesce played tunes from Madonna, Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper as star-studded guests moved to the rhythm while chatting it up with their peers and relishing in bites from a specially curated menu by chef and founder of Momofuku, David Chang. Attendees indulged in bing bread with ricotta and Chili Crunch, as well as his signature fried chicken. Other trays featured mini corn dogs and caviar sandwich bites. These dishes were washed down with Purely Sedona Water, Cooper's Hawk Wine including their Lux Sparkling Wine and neer from Santa Monica Brew Works. Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, Jodie Foster, Joey King, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Adrian Brody, Edward Norton, Quinta Brunson, Jeremy Allen White, Pamela Anderson, and Keri Russell were only some of the top-tier talent in the room. Inside a special space within the gala, presented by City National Bank, the night's winners stopped by the SAG Awards Engraving Station, offering those victorious with the opportunity to get their statuettes personalized. The cast of Bridgerton, Anora, Shogun, Baby Reindeer, Abbott Elementary and "Best Cast in a Motion Picture" winner Conclave were also present, making appearances at the Shutterstock portrait studio. Both new and familiar faces moved through the crowd, savoring the moment, until the music faded and the night marked another chapter in Hollywood's legendary award season celebrations.
