Vir Das recalls being ignored on the sets of 'Namastey London'; opens up about the stark classism of the film industry

Vir Das , the International Emmy award-winning comedian, has been thriving with the mind-blowing jokes and a simple mic. Well, before he became an iconic stand-up comedian, he made it to the Bollywood scene with supporting roles, leaving an indelible mark. However, the entertainment industry wasn't always kind to him. Vir Das recalls getting ignored and baked on the film set... Narrating an incident where he experienced stark classism, Das recalled him being the 'prospective groom number 3' in Vipul Amrutlal Shah 's 'Namastey London' (2007) for Katrina Kaif 's character in an interview with Moments of Silence podcast with Sakshi Shivdasani and Naina Bhan. The 46-year-old mentioned that back then, he didn't know that the films were supposed to be dubbed, as he was a theatre actor. He continued, 'So, the scene is we are on the terrace. I am the prospective groom number three. There is Rishi Kapoor , Nina Wadia and Katrina Kaif. On the other side, it is me and…' After a pause and making the dramatic air quotes, he added, 'we were the junior artistes — me and a woman playing my mother." "The only two sweaty people in this beautiful Bollywood scene" Das stated that Katrina Kaif, Nina Wadia and Rishi Kapoor had umbrellas over their heads to protect themselves from the sun. He shared, 'But me and my mother are baking in the sun. We are the only two sweaty people in this beautiful Bollywood scene." As he chronicled the incident, Vir said that the camera angles changed and the scenes were re-shot while Vir and his co-star's skin was a couple of shades tanned after being baked under the sun for so long. When the time arrived when Vir's close-ups were supposed to happen, all the actors got up and swiftly left because they didn't have to stick around.

Vir Das Recalls Getting Ignored On Namastey London Set: 'Katrina Had An Umbrella, I Was Left...'

Vir Das recalls being left to "bake in the sun" while Katrina Kaif and Rishi Kapoor had umbrellas during his debut film Namastey London. Before becoming an International Emmy-winning comedian, Vir Das had a brief, often overlooked stint in Bollywood. One of his earliest film roles was a small part in Vipul Amrutlal Shah's Namastey London (2007), where he played 'prospective groom number three" for Katrina Kaif's character. In a recent appearance on the Moments of Silence podcast, Vir opened up about that surreal first brush with the film industry, recalling not only the on-set experience but the stark class divide he encountered. 'I didn't know that movies were dubbed. I was a theatre actor," he said, adding that Katrina Kaif had apparently lost her voice at the time and wasn't speaking much. 'So, the scene is we are on the terrace. I am the prospective groom number three. There is Rishi Kapoor, Nina Wadia and Katrina Kaif. On the other side, it is me and…" he paused, making air quotes, 'we were the junior artistes — me and a woman playing my mother." Vir remembered how clearly the pecking order was laid out, even when it came to something as basic as protection from the sun. 'There is an umbrella over Rishi Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Nina Wadia's heads. But me and my mother are baking in the sun. We are the only two sweaty people in this beautiful Bollywood scene." Still unfamiliar with the way film shoots operated, Vir was startled when the director announced that Katrina's dialogue would be dubbed later. 'Vipul Shah was like, 'Katrina dubbing mein karlenge something something'. So the scene is Rishi Kapoor says something, I say something, and Katrina Kaif is like…" Vir mimicked her dialogue in a soft whisper. 'The director said, 'Cut, mind-blowing. Brilliant.' And I am just sitting there thinking: 'Am I high? She didn't say s**t.'" As the camera angles shifted and scenes were repeated, Vir and his co-actor continued to swelter under the sun. 'We are doing this again and again and again and my mother and I are changing shades, baking," he said. 'Finally, the time came for my close-up and they all got up and left because they didn't have to stick around." Vir was then left with just the third assistant director for his close-up. Yet amid the frustrating reality of being low on the totem pole, one gesture stood out — an interaction with Rishi Kapoor that he still treasures. 'Rishi Kapoor is a cool guy. He asked me, 'Beta tumhara naam kya hai?' and I said, 'Vir Das.' He put his hand forward and was like, 'Shake my hand, son.'" Vir laughed as he added, 'When you shake Rishi Kapoor's hand, you become Tina Munim from Karz. All your masculine energy just drains out and you are his heroine in that moment." He recalled that Kapoor told him, 'You are a great actor. Shake my hand. Promise me you will never leave acting." What happened next felt like a sign. 'Not lying, true story: within three seconds of him leaving, someone put an umbrella over my head in the unit." From baking in the background to basking in the spotlight, Vir Das's first day on a film set may have been humbling, but it was also quietly momentous — the start of a journey that would eventually take him from prospective groom number three to one of India's most celebrated comedy voices. Rishi Kapoor, Katrina Kaif got up and left when it was time for Vir Das' close-up: ‘They had umbrellas, I was left to bake in sun'

International Emmy-winning comedian Vir Das, was once a Bollywood actor. He began his career in the movies with a small role in filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah's 2007 film Namastey London. He played the prospective groom number three for Katrina Kaif's character Jasmine. In a recent interview, the actor recalled his experience of shooting for the film, and the classism he experienced on set. In the podcast Moments of Silence, Vir Das recounted, 'I didn't know that movies were dubbed. I was a theatre actor. I think Katrina had lost her voice, so she wasn't talking too much. So, the scene is we are on the terrace. I am the prospective groom number three. There is Rishi Kapoor, Nina Wadia and Katrina Kaif. On the other side it is me and…' He paused to make finger quotes, and said, 'We were the junior artistes, me and a woman playing my mother.' He continued, 'There is an umbrella over Rishi Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Nina Wadia's heads. But me and my mother are baking in the sun. We are the only two sweaty people in this beautiful Bollywood scene.' Vir didn't know his way around a film set back then, and was learning the ropes on the job. He continued, 'I didn't know about how cameras move and all of that stuff. Suddenly, Vipul Shah was like, 'Katrina dubbing mein karlenge something something'. So the scene is Rishi Kapoor says something, I say something, and Katrina Kaif is like…' Vir imitated Katrina's line in a barely audible whisper. Brilliant.' And I am just sitting there and thinking: 'Am I high? She didn't say s**t.' And then they moved the camera. Then it comes on to somebody else's close-up. Again the dialogues are repeated by all of us. Katrina is whispering again. Looking at her, I was shocked and was like: 'Is this her character in the movie?' We are doing this again and again and again and my mother and I are changing shades, baking. Finally, the time came for my close-up and they all got up and left because they didn't have to stick around.' The comedian shared that he was left with the third AD to do his scene. However, his first experience on set was not as bad as it sounds. He recalled Rishi Kapoor's advice to him. 'Rishi Kapoor is a cool guy. He asked me, 'Beta tumhara naam kya hai (Son, what's your name?)' and I was like, 'Vir Das'. He put his hand forward and was like, shake my hand son.' Explaining what that moment meant for him, Vir shared, 'So when you shake Rishi Kapoor's hand, you become Tina Munim from Karz. All your masculine energy just drains out and you are his heroine in that moment. I am shaking his hand and like 'He is the dude from Karz.' He is like, 'You are a great actor. Shake my hand. Promise me you will never leave acting.' And, not lying, it is a true story: within three seconds of him leaving, someone put an umbrella over my head in the unit.'

‘Best gossip buddy': Sanjana Ganesan's banter about life with Jasprit Bumrah wins hearts on the Internet

Banter between couples – celebrity or not – can make for some of the most charming, relatable content. In a recent podcast appearance, sports journalist and cricket anchor Sanjana Ganesan offered a candid look into her life with cricketer husband Jasprit Bumrah, and the Internet is loving it. Speaking on the podcast Moments of Silence hosted by Instagram influencers Sakshi Shivdasani and Naina Bhan, Ganesan shared how Bumrah is her 'best gossip buddy'. The two, she said, love lounging at home watching Netflix, indulging in chocolates, and catching up on work gossip. The now-viral clip also revealed a fun behind-the-scenes moment from their professional lives. Ganesan, who has interviewed Bumrah during matches, recalled how he often tries to throw her off by winking or smiling during serious segments. 'I try to stay focused and in journalist mode, but he knows exactly how to break that,' she said, laughing. The clip was posted on the podcast's Instagram page, @momentofsilencepod, with the caption, ''Interviewed a true inspiration this week — she's got it all (except your fav cricketer's phone number)! Stream now on Spotify!' The video has amassed 685K views and 42.5K likes on the platform. A post shared by Moment of Silence (@momentofsilencepod) Reacting to the video, a user commented, 'You carry strength with such grace, Sanjana di. Your poise, confidence, and calm presence are truly inspiring. Women like you redefine elegance.' Another user wrote, 'By far THE BEST EPISODE! Love how you highlighted her success and career without making it just about the husband. I knew I was a problem when I got excited thinking all the questions are going to be around cricket and 'the husband'.' One Instagram user said, 'Sanjana you are looking so beautiful.' However, not all feedback was positive. One user criticised the interviewers, saying, 'This was the best guest you had. I love you guys, but this was not your finest moment. Good questions were not put and you were not well prepared.' In the episode, Ganesan also touched upon her Miss India journey, college life, and thoughts on motherhood.
