"Assam's 15 districts have become Muslim-majority": Deputy Speaker Numal Momin

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 15 (ANI): Amidst discussions on demographic changes in many Hindu-populated constituencies in the state, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin has claimed that 15 districts of the state have become Muslim-majority. He alleged that the Congress's motto, motive and vision were to make Assam an Islamic state. 'As of now, 15 districts have become Muslim majority. At the time of independence, there was not a single district with a Muslim majority. It is a very alarming situation in Assam,' Momin told ANI in an interview. 'Very scientifically and tactically, infiltration is going on from Lower Assam to Middle Assam and Upper Assam. When I was a child, in that time, my neighbouring district, Golaghat, an area called Sarupathar, had only 60-70 Muslim houses. Now the figure has gone upto 6000-7000 households. This simple example is very much evidence that Muslims are migrating slowly from Lower Assam to Middle Assam and Upper Assam. It is not only demographic changes, but also a serious threat to the Indigenous Assamese people in Assam,' he added. He said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed his concern about the matter. Not only is it a matter of concern for the Chief Minister, but it is also a matter of concern for every Assamese and Indigenous people. Now it is high time to act against that conspiracy under which scientifically and tactically destroying the Assamese people, culture and its heritage, Momin said. He praised the chief minister for the eviction drive. However, he said that more eviction is required. 'The people who are living in that particular area they grabbed the lands, and tactically, they are buying the lands from Indigenous people. The Indigenous people don't want to sell, but because of the atrocities committed by those people. Out of fear, the Indigenous people sold their lands and ran away from that area,' he said. 'Now the BJP government is strongly advocating the protection of Indigenous people. The Indigenous people are getting security under this government. Further, we need to take more action so that Assam can be saved from the infiltrators, invaders, and Assam can be peaceful and prosper politically, economically, and educationally. The Assam Chief Minister has started the movement, and those who love Assam should support this. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is the answer to the burning issues of Assam,' the Deputy Speaker added. Criticising the Congress party, he said that, during the Congress period, not a single eviction drive was carried out. 'The Satras land, religious places, lands which doubtful citizens occupied. At that time, the Congress government was there, but they never took action against them. That directly indicates that the Congress is involved in and encouraging these activities by doubtful citizens. We have the evidence that the Congress is supporting the fundamental groups like Jamiyat and AAMSU. Because one of the MLAs of Congress openly said that, if Congress don't do these activities directly, they will give financial help to do those activities through AAMSU and Jamiyat,' he said. 'That means the Congress is directly involved. They are doing this for what, to kill the Indigenous people, destroy our culture and heritage, to grab the lands of Satras, religious places. I have enough evidence of what the Congress MLA said; they are financially helping AAMSU and Jamiyat. AAMSU is vocal against the Indigenous people of Assam, and they want to infiltrate more and more Bangladeshis, so that one day they can become the majority and have their own Chief Minister. But their dream will never come true. We, the Assamese people, will fight and protect the Indigenous people,' Momin added. He also said that, actually, earlier, the future of Indigenous people was totally bleak, and they were in a very dark position. After the BJP government come, they understand who is the enemy of Indigenous people. 'After 2016, under the BJP government, more than 12 lakh Indigenous people got land pattas, land rights. But during the Congress time, they didn't provide land pattas to the Indigenous people so that immigrant people would come and grab their lands. Now we have provided the land pattas to the Indigenous people. Their (Congress's) motto, motive and vision were to destroy Assam and make Assam an Islamic state. Now the BJP government has foiled their dream. The Indigenous people are very much comfortable in Assam,' Momin said. (ANI)

"Gogoi accusing BJP of diluting tribal autonomy is totally baseless": Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 7 (ANI): Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker and senior BJP leader Numal Momin has launched a sharp attack on the Congress, alleging that 'terrorism and atrocities' against the tribal people was prevalent in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong during their reign. He said that the Congress party had used the tribal people, minority community and Adivasi tea tribe people as their vote banks for years after years, but did nothing for the welfare and development of these people. Continuing his attacks, Momin said that the Congress party has always done politics with the tribal people and minority people of Assam, and the people of the state will give a befitting reply to Congress in the upcoming 2026 assembly polls. His remarks came after Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP-led Assam Government of eroding tribal autonomy under the current government in the state. 'Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the tribal area is now prospering. All-round development is taking place whether in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao or Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other tribal autonomous councils. For the first time, the tribal people have tasted the development by their own government,' Numal Momin told ANI. He further said that the Congress had ruled for more than 60 years in Assam, but at that time, the Congress party didn't think about the tribal people. Refuting Gogoi's allegations, Momin said that his accusing the BJP of diluting the tribal autonomy is 'totally baseless.' The BJP leader said, 'During the Congress regime, terrorism and atrocities against the tribal people were there in BTR, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong. Now, the BJP government has been able to bring peace and development together. Today, the people are happy and actively involved in the government's development projects. So now, university, medical college, central college and many more development works like stadiums, road communication, health sector have been done in tribal people-dominated areas in the state. But he (Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress President) is accusing the BJP of diluting the tribal autonomy, which is baseless...' The Deputy Speaker further requested Assam Congress chief Gogoi to compare his party's and the BJP's government policy for the tribal areas. 'I want to request that the State Congress chief should see retrospectively what they did in these tribal areas and what we are doing at present. If he compares, then I don't think that he will dare to speak such kinds of things again and accuse this government. The people of BTR, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are very happy under the dynamic and development-oriented Prime Minister Narendra Modi and our Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. When peace prevails in this area and development is going on in a very rapid way, at that time, he accused the government it being very unfortunate. The people will give a befitting reply in the upcoming 2026 assembly election,' Momin stated. The Deputy Speaker said that for years, Congress used tribal people, the Muslim minority community, the Christian minority community, and Adivasi tea tribes as their vote banks. 'They are using them in the election with a long list of promises, but they couldn't fulfil. Again, in the time of the election, they distributed a little bit of money and alcohol, and they purchased the common people's vote and formed the government year after year. Now people really understand the Congress's policy, and they defeated Congress twice in Assam, and for the third consecutive time, people are going to defeat Congress in the 2026 election. They are happy with the current government,' Numal Momin asserted. Speaking about the eviction drive in the state, he said that this is done to evict the illegal Bangladeshi Muslims who occupied our land, religious land, agricultural land, and forest land. He said, 'Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing good work for the people of Assam, the work which is very much needed in demand of us. People are really loving him. Now, the Congress is nervous; they don't have any issues for the 2026 assembly election. That's why they are accusing here and there, but people are well-versed in the Congress regime. In 2026, people will give their verdict, and Congress will get the answer at that time.' (ANI)

Neighbor helps rescue woman after lightning strike sparks Gwinnett house fire

A neighbor is being credited with helping a young woman escape a burning home after a lightning strike sparked a fire in Gwinnett County Saturday night. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The fire started just before 10 p.m. in the attic of a home on Tower View Trail SW near Snellville. Investigators say a powerful lightning strike hit the house during a line of storms that passed through the area. Zafer Momin said he was alerted when his neighbor banged on his door after calling the woman's mother to make sure she got out safely. The young woman had no idea a fire was burning above her. 'He was a savior for her, at least,' Momin said. 'He really helped to get her outside of the house.' Gwinnett County Fire Captain Ryan McGiboney said lightning-related fires often start in the attic, which makes them especially dangerous. 'With lightning strikes, they tend to routinely start in the attic space,' McGiboney said. 'We typically don't put up smoke alarms or any type of monitoring device up there.' No one was hurt. 'Every time we respond to a fire, it's that everyone got out safely and there's no injuries. It's a blessing,' he said. He urged families to have emergency plans and working smoke alarms and to stay alert during storms. 'We always recommend people to visit websites like putting together an emergency plan, testing and regularly checking your smoke alarm, CO alarms,' McGiboney said. Momin said neighbors look out for one another like family, and he's grateful this close call didn't end in tragedy. 'We talk to each other, we try to help each other out,' he said.
