Traffic leads to big lottery win for lucky Maryland player. ‘Heck of a blessing'
A Delaware man was hoping to quench his thirst. Traffic, however, got in his way, Maryland Lottery officials said in a June 11 news release. 'I tried to get my drink … but traffic was too heavy to get over,' the man told lottery officials. Instead, he waited a few minutes and stopped for a drink at a Delmar convenience store about 100 yards into Maryland, lottery officials said. 'It was annoying then, but looking back, that traffic was one heck of a blessing,' he told lottery officials. Along with his drink, the man also bought a $10 Money Bags ticket on June 6, lottery officials said. 'There's no real reason why I bought a ticket then,' he said, per the release. 'The idea just sort of popped into my mind.' Upon seeing that his ticket came with a second-tier prize of $50,000, he said 'it was a sense of relief.' 'Immediately followed by disbelief, though,' the winner told lottery officials. His girlfriend quickly eliminated his skepticism by confirming his big win using the lottery app on her phone. The custodian told lottery officials he plans to spend his winnings on bills and share the rest with 'family members who've fallen on hard times.' 'I've been trying to figure out ways to lend a hand but haven't had the means. Now I do,' he said in the release. 'This is a big help.' Delmar is about a 115-mile drive southeast from Baltimore.

Couple almost missed out on life-changing lottery prize, but they doubled back
A Maryland couple almost missed out on a life-changing lottery prize. The husband and wife were grocery shopping at a store in Baltimore County 'when they realized that they had passed the store's lottery vending machine,' Maryland Lottery officials said in a June 2 news release. 'We still had a lot to get and were short on time so we debated going back to get a ticket,' the husband told lottery officials. 'We almost didn't, but we doubled back.' They settled on a Money Bags scratch-off that cost $10, and ended up winning $250,000, lottery officials said. Later, the husband was mowing the grass when his wife came outside to let him know they'd won. She asked him to guess the amount of their windfall, lottery officials said. 'I guessed $500, which is the most I'd ever won, and she pointed up. I made a couple more guesses and she kept pointing. Then she got too excited to wait and showed it to me. 100% disbelief,' he said, according to the release. The husband and wife plan to pay bills and do some remodeling with the winnings, lottery officials said. Plus, 'we should still have plenty left over to find something fun to do,' the husband said, per the release.

Lottery player was thrilled over win. But she wasn't done scratching her ticket
This Washington, D.C., woman isn't one to hastily buy her lottery tickets. Instead, she does her homework — and now her research has paid off with a big prize, Maryland Lottery officials said. The retired woman told lottery officials she scours the lottery's website to find games that 'still have a lot of big prizes.' 'I pick one and buy it whenever I get my tickets,' she said in the release. This pointed her to Money Bags, which still had five top prizes available, lottery officials said. 'I'd get two of them every time I played and I did pretty well,' the woman told lottery officials. 'I even won $100 a couple of times.' She bought two tickets for $10 each at a Temple Hills convenience store Monday, May 5, according to lottery officials. When she scratched her tickets in her car, the woman saw a $50,000 match, she told lottery officials. Filled with excitement, she rushed home to show her family her winning ticket, lottery officials said. They, too, were thrilled, 'but even more so when they pointed out that she hadn't finished scratching the ticket,' lottery officials said Turns out, the woman won the game's top prize of $250,000, lottery officials said. The winner told lottery officials after she uses some of the money to pay off some bills and help family, she plans to tuck the rest away in savings. Temple Hills is about a 50-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Nurse wins lottery three times in five years — all in April. ‘That's crazy'
A Maryland nurse noticed an interesting pattern in her lottery plays over the past five years: she's won big three times when playing in mid-April, lottery officials said. The latest win for the Owings Mills woman happened earlier this month when she won $50,000 from a Money Bags scratch off game, the Maryland Lottery said in an April 22 news release. 'I was thinking about my two biggest wins as we drove here today and realized that both of them were in April!' the woman told lottery officials when she claimed her prize. 'Now a third. That's crazy.' What's more is each win seems to increase, she said. Five years ago she won $10,000 in April, then she won $20,000 two years ago. 'Every morning since then, I wake up and think for a moment that this has been a dream,' the woman told lottery officials. 'And a moment later I smile knowing that it really did happen.' The lucky player purchased her ticket for $10 in lieu of dessert during lunch with a friend at a deli in Dundalk, lottery officials said. The odds of winning a prize in the Money Bags game, which started in February, are 1 in 3.5, according to the game's web page. Prizes range between $10 and $250,000, the lottery said. Dundalk is about a 10-mile drive southeast from Baltimore.
