Watch new MSU PG Divine Ugochukwu hit game-winner in Moneyball Pro-A
New Spartans point guard Divine Ugochukwu made a game-winning play on Tuesday in the Moneyball Pro-Am event. In a tie game with only three seconds left, Ugochukwu drove to the hoop and hit a game-winning and-one basket to send his squad to the semifinals of Moneyball Pro-Am. It was quite the play by Ugochukwu and should excite Spartans for another potential threat to make a big-play late in a critical moment of a game. Check out the highlight play below -- courtesy of Ben Shockley of WILX in Lansing: Ugochukwu transferred to Michigan State this offseason after playing one year with the Miami (FL) Hurricanes. He played big-time minutes as true freshman this past season and is expected to serve as a key reserve off the bench this upcoming season with the Spartans. Moneyball Pro-Am is getting close to wrapping up with this being the final week of games. Hopefully, Thursday night will include some more fun moments like Ugochukwu's game-winner on Tuesday. Wanting that 'old Gus Macker feel,' Moneyball 3-on-3 basketball tournament moves to downtown Lansing, Aug. 2-3
Desmond Ferguson grew up in Lansing at the height of the downtown Lansing Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournaments in the early to mid-90s. He'd love to bring that vibe back to Lansing again. So he's moving the annual Moneyball 3-on-3 tournament to the streets of downtown Lansing — more specifically Washington Avenue, between Ionia and Shiawassee streets, Aug. 2 and 3. The event was previously held in Delta Township. 'I remember being in middle school and high school, seeing it downtown. It was the first time I saw Shane Battier play,' Ferguson, the founder of Moneyball Sportswear and the Moneyball Pro-Am, said. 'I really wanted that old Gus Macker feel.' Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournaments were a staple of Labor Day weekends in downtown Lansing from 1989 through the mid-90s. The plan was to bring it back sometime in 2020. Then the pandemic hit. The Moneyball 3-on-3 is a similar-style tournament, with age divisions ranging from third and fourth grade through 35-and-older. The cost is $130 per team (four players per team), with a complementary custom Moneyball 3-on-3 jersey. Games are first to 15 points or for 20 minutes, whichever comes first. Those wishing to participate can register through July 29 at Contact Graham Couch at gcouch@ Follow him on X @Graham_Couch and on BlueSky @GrahamCouch. New offseason video shows Carson Cooper's continued improvement in three-point shot
It's the middle of the summer so live basketball content is not often available, but, thanks to the Moneyball Pro-Am, we get an inside look to how the Spartans are improving their games this offseason. For one Spartan big man, that apparently includes adding a three-point shot. Early this summer, fans began to speculate about Carson Cooper working to develop a three-point shot thanks to a social media post of the Spartans practicing. That speculation and fan interest has only grown after some of the most recent Moneyball Pro-Am games where Cooper has shown off a nice looking shot from deep. Thanks to Spartans Illustrated, a highlight video of Cooper and starting point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. has hit the social media timelines. In this video, we can see Cooper knocking down some threes -- which has not remotely been part of his game up to this point in his Michigan State career. At least during games, that is. Check out the clip of Cooper drilling some deep shots below: As we do with any Moneyball Pro-Am content, I will remind you that we can't put too much emphasis on what we get out of these exhibition games. In the past, that has burned us when we raised the bar too high on guys like Pierre Brooks III and Lourawls "Tum Tum" Nairn Jr. But, with that being said, Cooper's shot looks pretty nice from the video clip seen above, so... maybe this is actually something we should be monitoring for this fall. Cooper has only taken one three-point shot attempt in a game since coming to Michigan State -- which was a miss. So I'm not going to act like this is the beginning of a sharp shooting big man for the Spartans. But let's just file this away as further evidence of potentially a new part of Cooper's game coming our way this season. And, should it actually turn into something we consistently see, then that would go a long way for Cooper and the Spartans this year. Incoming Michigan State basketball transfer drops 58 points at Moneyball Pro-Am
Welcome to Moneyball, Trey Fort. It's no secret that incoming Michigan State basketball transfer Trey Fort has some big shoes to fill. As the expected starting shooting guard, the former Samford guard will need to try to fill in, along with Kur Teng, for three different Spartans who had played that position last year, including one who is now in the NBA. Well, Fort has certainly done a good job of making a first impression for MSU fans. While the Moneyball Pro-Am results need to be taken with a grain of salt, considering the nature of the competition and the level of defense that is sometimes being played, Fort still dropped 58 points on Thursday night, which was still an impressive feat. Ironically, it was Jaxon Kohler's 58 point game in last year's Moneyball Pro-Am that portended his big uptick in production this season. So, while Moneyball stats can be a little inflated offensively, they can still show us some of what these guys can do, and it looks like Trey Fort can score the basketball.
