RBC elevates US investment bankers Chawhan, Monga to unit heads

By David French NEW YORK (Reuters) -RBC Capital Markets has promoted two of its financial services investment bankers to run units advising insurance and specialty finance companies in the U.S., a spokesperson for the bank confirmed on Thursday. Neil Chawhan has been elevated to head of U.S. insurance investment banking, and Saurabh Monga will now co-lead the U.S. specialty finance business of RBC Capital Markets. Both Chawhan and Monga have been managing directors within the investment banking arm of Royal Bank of Canada since 2017, according to their respective LinkedIn profiles. Chawhan's career before RBC was predominantly at Bank of America, where he spent nearly 16 years, with a stint at Stifel's Keefe, Bruyette & Woods before joining the Canadian bank. Prior to RBC, Monga spent nearly 17 years split between Deutsche Bank and Bank of America. Monga's stewardship of the U.S. specialty finance team will be alongside Eric Steifman, the investment bank's co-head of U.S. banks and specialty finance. Sign in to access your portfolio

15-year-old wonderkid snubs Chelsea transfer to stay at relegated club

One of English football's most promising young talents has turned down the chance to sign for Chelsea and Manchester City. Jeremy Monga made headlines in March when he became the second-youngest player in Premier League history, aged just 15 years and 271 days. Only Arsenal superstar Ethan Nwaneri (15 years and 181 days) was younger when he made his top-flight debut. The Leicester youngster went onto make seven Premier League appearances before the end of the season but was powerless to prevent the Foxes' relegation. Unsurprisingly, transfer interest in Monga has been huge with Chelsea and Man City among the Premier League clubs keen on signing him. Several European giants including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were also keen on the winger who has already captained England's U16 side. But it was announced on Monday that the teenager had snubbed all of them and would be staying at Leicester alongside eight other academy stars who had agreed new deals. 'Jeremy Monga has committed to commencing his professional career as a Leicester City player, with an agreement now in place to secure the talented teenager's future at King Power Stadium,' the club said. 'Jeremy will begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first professional contract scheduled to commence in summer 2026.' More Trending Had Monga, who joined Leicester's Academy aged nine, left for another English club, the Foxes would only have received a small compensation fee. Speaking after his historic debut against Newcastle, Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy was full of praise for Monga, saying: 'At such a young age and being the second youngest ever in the Premier League, it says something about how early he has developed. 'He has the physical capability also and the mental capability to handle this. But we have his pathway ready for him and we're going to guide him through that. 'But you could see the way he trained this week, after he made his debut, it's already lifted him and showed an even higher level, so it's going quickly really with him. 'You have to look after these players, mentally and physically. You can't go too quick too soon. But within reason, we have to make the most of it and use him as much as we can.' While a blow for the likes of Chelsea and Man City, they will no doubt be keeping tabs on the wonderkid as he continues to develop in the Championship next season. There was some good transfer news for the Blues on Monday however, as they confirmed the signing of Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 club also owned by Todd Boehly. The 19-year-old defender joins in a deal worth £12million and has signed a contract until 2033. For more stories like this, check our sport page. The news will come as a blow to Manchester City and a string of other Premier League and top continental clubs who were desperate to snap up the teenage prodigy. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Jeremy Monga has signed a professional contract with Leicester Credit: Alamy The winger became the second youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League earlier this season when he came on as a substitute against Newcastle. And he went on to make seven Premier League appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy's relegated Foxes. That sparked interest from Euro giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as interest closer to home, led by Man City. Foxes fans feared Monga would be snapped up before he fulfilled his potential at the King Power. City could have swooped before he was old enough to sign his first professional contract aged 17 and Leicester would only have received a nominal fee as compensation for developing the young talent. However that would have been worth a fraction of the kid's true value. Now Leicester have protected their investment by convincing the 15-year-old winger to sign a new scholarship contract with a professional clause that kicks in when he reaches his 17th birthday in July next year. Monga, who joined Leicester's Academy as a nine-year-old, will now begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first pro contract kicking in by the summer of 2026. Despite being just 15 years old, Monga has already featured for the Foxes first team during the 2024/25 season. It means the teenager will be around next season to try and help Leicester return to the Premier League at the first attempt and comes as a huge boost to the relegated Foxes. £67M Real Madrid Star Rodrygo on Gunners Hit List | From The Sports Desk | Sun Sport Leicester are also on the brink of signing fellow teenager Jake Evans on a similar deal. 'It's important to have these players for the future for a longer time. I think he will be very good for the club,' said Van Nistelrooy at the end of last season. Polish goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk has seen his contract extended by the Club to 2027 after an impressive campaign that saw the 24-year-old Academy graduate collect 10 Premier League appearances. In total Leicester signed up nine Academy graduates as they prepare for life back in the Championship. But Monga's deal is by far the most significant as it keeps him out of the clutches of Europe's leading clubs. Following a 16-minute debut off the bench against Newcastle in the Premier League, Monga went on to make a further six league appearances for the club under Van Nistelrooy. A club statement said: "Nine exciting young talents from our Academy will extend their stays with Leicester City after a combination of new contracts, extension options and scholarship agreements were confirmed... "Meanwhile, Jeremy Monga has committed to commencing his professional career as a Leicester City player, with an agreement now in place to secure the talented teenager's future at King Power Stadium. "Jeremy will begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first professional contract scheduled to commence in summer 2026. "Our second-youngest appearance maker and the second-youngest player in Premier League history, having made the first of his seven Premier League appearances against Newcastle United in April, aged 15 years and 271 days, Jeremy is among an exciting group currently progressing on our Academy pathway, which he joined as an Under-9." The versatile winger has been captain of England's Under-16s too and trained with City's U-21s squad as a result of his potential. But that only helped to catch the eye of some of Europe's top clubs, with City among those who were hoping to tie up a move this summer. Monga almost made history by becoming the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer against Nottingham Forest, only to be denied by Matz Sels. Van Nistelrooy was boisterous on his future and said at the time: "That would have been some story if Jeremy could have topped his exam week with a winner away at Forest. "If he stays here and this is his future we can build more minutes into his pathway. "I've had many conversations with him and his family. And so hopefully he can sign soon - it's up to him. "It's a joy to work with him and sometimes we speak about GCSEs and mathematics. I even have to help him with his studies sometimes! "But if he had scored the winner against Forest that would have been a real fairytale."

Who was Sunjoy Monga? Mumbai's ‘bird man' passes away at 63 after battling blood cancer

Mumbai: Award winning wildlife photographer and veteran journalist Sunjoy Monga was to go birding in Lokhandwala this weekend. Unfortunately, he passed away on Wednesday, May 30, succumbing to a nine-year battle with blood cancer. Sunjoy Monga was 63-years-old. His death has left nature lovers and activists in deep shock. Apart from his award-winning photography, Sunjoy Monga also left his footprints in 'Bird Race' — an annual bird-spotting event that inspired the love of birds among hundreds of Mumbaikars over the years. In 2005, Monga launched Mumbai's first-ever bird race—an event that has since become an annual tradition known as 'Wings – Birds of India.' Monga's idea of launching a bird race was inspired by the Hong Kong bird race. As part of the Mumbai race, Monga invited birdwatchers to dedicate 12 hours to spotting as many bird species as possible. The inaugural race saw around 100 enthusiasts record 277 different species in and around Mumbai. Since then, Monga expanded the event to 33 cities across India, with the tradition still thriving today. As per experts, Sunjoy Monga started his bird-watching journey with other prominent names in the field such as Humayun Abdulali and Salim Ali. 'A great tree has fallen,' Pravin Subramanian, who organised the Bird Race with Monga since 2007, told HT. 'Back then, there were only two books for bird enthusiasts to follow. Monga filled this void by writing comprehensible books for all,' added the Bird Race co-organiser. Sunjoy Monga served for several years on the governing council of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a testament to his deep-rooted expertise as a naturalist. Monga's knowledge and passion for the environment made him a valuable contributor to several key conservation bodies. The 63-year-old was also a member of the Executive Committee of the MMRDA's Environment Improvement Society, the Maharashtra Nature Park Society, and also held the honorary post of Warden at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Raju Kasambe, programme manager, lands, at The Nature Conservancy, an environmental organisation, told HT: 'At the end of each race, Sunjoy would put together an amusing presentation with a lot of takeaways. It took a lot of grit in the early years to put together a checklist of birds and hand it over to 30 groups, then analyse each sheet and the data, but he did it every year. A lot it has migrated to the e-bird app.'
