Bihar police lathi charge on protesting Jan Suraaj workers in Patna, many get injured
Police lathi charged on the protesting Jan Suraaj party workers who were on their way to gherao the ongoing Monsoon Session of Bihar Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday (July 23, 2025). In the scuffle between the police and party workers, many got seriously injured. Jan Suraaj party was protesting against the government in support of their demands including alleged corruption in land survey, Dalit families not getting three decimal of land and 94 lakh poor families not getting ₹2 lakh for employment despite government announcement. As planned, the party workers were not allowed to enter the road which was leading towards the Assembly building. They tried their best from 11 a.m. when the Assembly proceedings began but everywhere there was heavy deputation of the police force. Holding placards, banners and posters, the party workers gathered at Patel Chowk near Chitkohra Bridge. Even Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor also reached near the protest site. When the police tried to stop them, party workers including Mr. Kishore sat on a dharna on the road itself after a scuffle. The police tried hard to remove the workers and when they tried to break the police barricading and move towards the Assembly, the police responded through lathi charge to disperse the protestors. Many of the party workers received injuries. One party worker was hit on his head. One party worker was hit on both legs due to which he was unable to walk. Both were rushed to nearby hospitals. Pointing towards the police, Mr. Kishor said, 'Why did you lathi charge on my party workers? Did any of my party workers pelt stones on any police officer or magistrates, then why do you people lathi charge on them? Do you have the guts to use your lathi on me then I will show what I can do. I will make it difficult for the government to function even for a day.' When a police officer asked him to leave the place, Mr. Kishor further said, 'Don't show me this police tantrum, I have seen enough of this. For the last two months, we have trying to meet the Chief Minister over our demands but there is no response. We also tried to meet the Governor but ge also did not have time. So, we had no other options except going to Vidhan Sabha.' Later, a six member delegation led by Jan Suraaj State president Manoj Bharti met Bihar Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena to hand over the memorandum of the demands. Mr. Kishor threatened if the government does not take action on their demands then he will gheraoe the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by bringing one lakh people.

The curious case of July jinx for India's Vice-Presidents
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position citing health reasons on the first day of the Monsoon Session on July 21. A curious pattern seems to shadow India's Vice Presidency with instances of high-profile resignations and even a death, all curiously clustered in the month of July. Jagdeep Dhankar still had two years left for his term to complete. Unlike some of his predecessors who resigned to ascend to the presidency, he too exited in July citing health concerns, making his early exit first Vice-President to resign from his post was VV Giri, as Dr Zakir Hussain, the third President of India, suddenly passed away on May 3, 1969. Under Article 65(1) of the Constitution, the Vice-President VV Giri assumed office to act as President. However, VV Giri, resigned on July 20, 1969 as Vice-President and also as the acting President to contest the presidential election. Giri eventually won the elections to become the fourth President of 1987 Presidential election made a mid-term Vice Presidential election inevitable as the sitting Vice President R Venkataraman won the Presidency. R Venkataraman resigned as Vice President in July 1987 after being elected President. After R Venkataraman was elected as the President, Shankar Dayal Sharma was elected unopposed to the post of Vice-President and assumed office on September 3, 1987. However, he fought the presidential election of 1992 and resigned in July 1992 after being elected Tenth Presidential Election declared on July 16, 1992, made mid-term Vice Presidential elections inevitable. Choice of govt's VP nominee likely after PM's return from tour, NDA allies in with a chance
AS THE Election Commission announced on Wednesday that it had begun preparations for election of the new Vice President, the government's choice for Jagdeep Dhankhar's replacement will be decided by the BJP Parliamentary Board. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who heads the board, departing on a four-day overseas tour on Wednesday, the meeting will take place only on his return. Top BJP sources said the government's candidate – who is expected to be elected given the BJP-led NDA's numbers in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – will be 'someone with total loyalty'. A senior BJP leader said: 'Although a final decision in this regard will be taken by the senior leadership of the party, discussions around who will replace Dhankhar have centred on him or her being a longstanding member of the NDA.' The leader added: 'There is certainly a possibility of a member from one of the key constituents of the NDA – especially the TDP or JD(U) being chosen.' Such a move would strengthen the ties between the BJP and its allies. A source added pointedly that the vice-presidential election comes at a time when 'a significant reshuffle' is expected in the Union Cabinet, apart from gubernatorial postings and internal polls for the BJP's next national president. According to party insiders, BJP MPs who are heading towards the end of their Rajya Sabha tenures and Ministers of State, apart from party leaders, are likely to be part of these reshuffles. Sources added that while events on Monday in the Rajya Sabha as Dhankhar chaired the House, reportedly related to the Opposition motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, were the immediate trigger, Dhankhar's resignation was 'in the offing for some time'. A senior BJP leader said there were several reasons for this, including, 'but not limited to', his health. A BJP MP who called on Dhankhar on the eve of the start of the Monsoon Session said: 'There are certainly several reasons at play, but his health is definitely a reason for his decision (to resign).' Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday went all-out in a fresh attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence over US President Donald Trump's repeated claims about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He also slammed the large-scale voter roll revision in Bihar that rocked the first three days of the Monsoon Session, and alleged a broader pattern of electoral fraud by the BJP in multiple said that Trump has made the claim "25 times", yet the Indian Prime Minister has remained silent, triggering serious questions about the government's narrative."Trump has said 25 times that he got the ceasefire done. Mocking the government's portrayal of Operation Sindoor as a success, Gandhi pointed out the apparent contradictions in the official messaging."On one hand you say Operation Sindoor is ongoing, and on the other, you say victory has been achieved. Either it's ongoing, or it's over. Trump is saying he halted Sindoor. So 'kuch toh daal mein kala hai na'," he said, using a popular Hindi idiom implying something is Congress MP also questioned India's foreign policy standing post-Operation Sindoor, alleging that no country had supported India diplomatically."They have destroyed our foreign policy. No one supported us," he said, accusing the government of isolating India on the global Gandhi further suggested that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding Parliament precisely because of Trump's claim. "How can the Prime Minister give a statement? What will he say - that Trump got the ceasefire done? He can't say that. I will show it to the Election Commission in black and white on how theft is done. They have understood that we are aware of their game now. Now, what they are doing is that they have deleted the voters, and a new voter list will be brought," he said. I'm the one who called them and said: Stop," Trump however, has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan was reached after direct military-to-military communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), initiated at Pakistan's request. During a call with Trump last month, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India "does not and will never accept mediation". Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India's military response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead. The operation involved high-precision drone and missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
