After a day of heavy rains, most of the Pittsburgh regions will get a break from showers

Yesterday's First Alert Day that we issued due to a risk of flash flooding certainly verified. We saw several communities see more than three inches of rain, including radar estimates of 4.5" of rain in the Tarentum area. After all that rain yesterday, we could certainly use a break, and most are going to get that today. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos While close, I can't say everyone will be rain-free, though. By far, the highest chance for rain today will come for places south of I-70. If you are heading south to West Virginia, the entire state is under a flood watch through midnight. For Morgantown and places south of I-70, today's highest chance for rain arrives after 6 this afternoon and continues through around 3 this morning. While the sun is still up, expect to see a couple of isolated storms in this area, turning to more rain as we head through the overnight hours. The reason for the rain in this area will be a weak boundary that will be lagging in place. Where the boundary goes, the rain chance will tick up. Highs today will hit the mid-80s with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Winds will be out of the southwest at around 10mph. It's still fairly humid outside today, so you'll be battling that today. Part of our rain chance for today comes from a trough of dry air pushing in from the north. Most data shows a powerful blockage of stable air keeping us mostly dry, even as this boundary dips and moves through. This boundary will likely enhance storms and rain chances south of I-70 through the overnight hours. Friday is looking like the pick of the week. With highs in the low 80s and humidity levels lower. I can't guarantee you'll be dry, but rain and storms will be isolated. Downpours will be possible. Rain on Saturday and Sunday will come during the afternoon, with mornings dry. Highs both days will be in the low 80s with morning lows dipping into the mid to upper 60s. It should feel nice. Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Post 2 downs Buckhannon 5-2 to begin Area 2 tournament, faces Bridgeport Wednesday

MORGANTOWN – First-year head coach Jacob Goodknight enjoyed the resiliency of his players on Tuesday night as Morgantown Post 2 opened postseason play with a solid 5-2 victory over Buckhannon Post 7. Mason Chaney led Morgantown, going 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. UHS graduate Daniel Grabo added a pair of hits while his classmate Tommy Montague tossed 2.2 innings of two-hit baseball to close the deal. With the victory, Post 2 advances to the 1-0 game of the Area 2 tournament to battle Bridgeport Post 68 Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Bridgeport defeated Clarksburg Post 13 5-2 in the opening game of the tournament. 'I loved the fight from our guys after letting a couple of runs early and actually falling behind at one point,' Goodknight said. 'They sort of small-balled us to death and forced some mistakes from us, but we came right back and put two runs up ourselves. Like we told them, in postseason play the goal is to go 1-0 every single day, every single game.' Post 2 starter Jack Bryner allowed the first two runners to reach base but earned three straight strikeouts to close the top half of the opening inning. Morgantown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an infield error, but Buckhannon punched back in the top of the third with two runs to steal the lead. Post 2 tied the game in the same inning on a sacrifice fly by Nate Wolfe that scored Chaney. Bryner used only 11 pitches to exit the top of the fourth, giving his offense the much-needed confidence boost it needed entering the bottom half. Parker Jeffries singled with one out, and Brance McCune followed with a shot to center that got past the outfield, allowing the go-ahead run to score as McCune took third. He scored on another sac fly (this time by Chaney) to double the lead at 4-2, and the final run came in the fifth as Grabo took home on a wild pitch. 'Mason (Chaney) has stepped up for us on and off the field,' Goodknight said. 'We're up three, and he hits a ball in the infield but beats it out for a single on bad knees. That just shows the heart he has. After the game, he's in the dugout, making sure everyone leaves as a team together. All we ask of them is to play hard and play for each other.' Post 2 will have a quick 24-hour turnaround against a talented Bridgeport roster. The winner will advance to play Thursday in the Area 2 championship and will hold the advantage of having a 2-0 record, needing to lose twice to be eliminated. 'Every day we try to emphasize the little things and do those right,' Goodknight said. 'It doesn't matter who we play, we are trying to go out there to win every game. We know teams are going to try to manufacture runs against us, so we need to remain focused on our goals at all times and how we can achieve those.'

Morgantown Post 2 set to host Area, State Legion Baseball tournaments over next two weeks

MORGANTOWN – Mylan Park will see its fair share of baseball over the next couple of weeks as the Morgantown Post 2 American Senior Legion team will host both the Area 2 and WV State Legion baseball tournaments. The Area 2 tournament will see Post 2 welcome Buckhannon, Bridgeport, and Clarksburg to Dale Miller Field. Opening games will be played on Tuesday, with Clarksburg and Bridgeport starting the day at 4:00 p.m., followed by Morgantown and Buckhannon. Winners will play at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while the losers will play an elimination game at 4:00 p.m. The championship will be held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and if needed, the two final teams will return Friday at the same time for the deciding game. The top two teams will advance to next week's state tournament. Morgantown enters the Area 2 tournament with a 9-12 record, but has gone 5-1 against the field in the area tournament this week. 'We've had a roller coaster of a summer,' First-year head coach Jacob Goodknight said. 'We started the season 5-0 and then had quite the losing streak, but that's baseball. There's always going to be adversity in a game that embraces failure. I think we've learned that if we go play as hard as possible for seven innings and if we stay together as a team, we should be happy with the results at the end of the day.' Post 2 is led offensively by Kane Williams, who is hitting .440 at the plate with 22 hits and 15 RBI in 50 at-bats. Nine of those hits went for extra bases, while he also scored 12 runs. UHS graduate and Bethany College signee, Brance McCune, leads Post 2 with 25 hits and 21 runs scored. Three pitchers have gone over 18 innings this summer for Post 2 as Mason Chaney, Grayson Campbell, and Lucas Shinn are solid options to start on the bump. Others, such as Judd Messerly, Daniel Grabo, and Tristan Milik, will all be available for Goodknight's club as well. 'We are talented on the field, but one thing that has impressed me recently is the leadership within the team,' Goodknight said. 'Some of our older guys have taken control of the dynamic in the dugout and made guys accountable. If you have a bad at-bat or make an error, move on. They are helping the younger guys understand that you can help the team win even if you're not having the best day.' Goodknight says one of the best things about his team this summer has been the growth of the team dynamics. 'We have such a broad mix of players, some of whom haven't played Legion baseball and some who have been with the program since they were 14 years old,' he said. 'We have been able to come together, and now we have to realize that despite what we do during our school seasons, none of that matters now. We represent Morgantown, and more importantly, represent everything that '2' on top of our hats stands for, as well as the history that comes with it. I hope that when they go back to their respective programs in the spring, they will take a couple of lessons from this summer.'

Second round of county opioid grants announced

Jul. 4—MORGANTOWN — The Monongalia County Commission has concluded its second round of opioid grant funding, announcing seven awards totaling $454, 900. The funds being distributed are provided to the county annually as its cut of the "local government shares " of roughly $1 billion in opioid settlement dollars awarded to the state. Those local shares are provided to counties and municipalities for direct use, reimbursement of opioid abatement activities or, as in the county's case, suballocation. To date, the county has received a total of $1, 366, 277.79 in two installments—$1, 019, 972.52 on Jan. 12, 2024, and $346, 304 on Jan. 31. It's now approved the distribution of $1, 081, 800, leaving a balance of $284, 477.31. Commissioner Sean Sikora said the commission provided funds to each of the seven agencies that applied this year, though not necessarily the full request amount. "We had $757, 667 requested, and we approved $454, 900, which is about 60 % of what was requested, " he said. "But out of the seven, we approved at least part of all of them." The agencies receiving funding are:—Lauren's Wish Addiction Triage Center, $100, 000—Wise Path Recovery Center, $100, 000—Morgantown Area Youth Services Project, $60, 000—Jacob's Ladder Assistance Fund, $56, 200—Monongalia County Health Department, $55, 000—Mon EMS, $43, 700—Libera Inc., $40, 000 With the exception of Jacob's Ladder, each of the recipients also received grant funding from the county during its 2024 allocation. Last July, the commission distributed $626, 900 to 13 of the 18 agencies that applied. Of the opioid settlement funding coming to West Virginia, 72.5 % will be distributed as grants at the state level through the West Virginia First Foundation, 24.5 % goes to local governments and 3 % stays with the state. The West Virginia First Foundation has thus far completed one grant cycle, distributing nearly $17 million to 94 projects across West Virginia. Of that amount, roughly $3.4 million went to 21 recipients /projects in the 13-county Region 4, which includes Monongalia, Marion and Preston counties. In Monongalia County, a number of agencies have received grant awards from the West Virginia First Foundation and at least one allocation from the county. Those agencies, and total amount received, are:—Morgantown Sober Living, $440, 000—Lauren's Wish, $305, 850.71—Libera Inc., $228, 120.06—Monongalia County Health Department, $199, 528.17—Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center, $165, 620.70 Wise Path Recovery Center has received a total of $225, 000 in two county allocations. Morgantown Area Youth Services Project has received a total of $120, 000 in two county allocations.
