The original Moroka Swallows visits Vaal
SEDIBENG.- The original Moroka Swallows took a short trip to visit Vaal on Saturday. 'The Dube Birds,' as Swallows is affectionately known in South African football, embarked on the tour to play a series of friendly matches against locally based development teams. These games took place at Cecil Oldridge Park in Vanderbijlpark on Saturday. It was a great day of football, seeing one of the clubs with a rich history visit the local development teams. To date, Swallows was one of the so-called 'Big Three' in South African football along the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. This was when the club campaigned in top-flight football. It was a trip down memory lane with the club's official, Thabang Nonyana, sharing some interesting memories with Sedibeng Ster Sport. Nonyana said Moroka Swallows development never died after the club disappeared from top-flight football. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport it is a work in progress to revive this team. South African football history will never be written without mentioning the name of the club. The club visited the local development teams with the following divisions: U13, U15, U17, and a reserve team. 'We're bringing Moroka Swallows back in South African football, and I'm happy the club's development never died. We want to thank Nale Academy for hosting us. We chose to visit this academy because we are aware of its contribution to the development of football, not only in Vaal but in South Africa. When I asked which development team we could play against in Vaal, I was told Nale Academy. I must say, we came here and there is a lot we learned from their development structures, especially their playing philosophy. This academy is very organised compared to some of the so-called elite academies. This is what we want to see in South African football, development over results,' said Nonyana. Where is former Kaizer Chiefs captain Patrick Mabedi now?
Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Patrick Mabedi is widely regarded as one of the best and toughest defenders in the history of the Premier Soccer League. The former Malawian international played a crucial role during the early 2000s when Amakhosi enjoyed significant domestic success. Under the guidance of coach Ted Dumitru, Mabedi and Fabian McCarthy formed a formidable defensive partnership that helped the Glamour Boys claim their first title in 12 years. Kaizer Chiefs secured back-to-back league titles in 2004 and 2005, largely due to having the best defense in the league. Mabedi spent eight years with Kaizer Chiefs and captained the team during its most successful period. He left the club in 2006, having made over 200 appearances for the Naturena-based side, and joined Moroka Swallows. For his country, Malawi, he earned 21 caps and scored five goals while representing the national team. After leaving Kaizer Chiefs, Mabedi transitioned to coaching. He became the head of youth development at Moroka Swallows and briefly served as an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral at Mpumalanga Black Aces. In June 2017, Mabedi was appointed as the assistant manager of Kaizer Chiefs. On April 23, 2018, he was named caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. However, in early December, he was relieved of his duties as the team's assistant coach following the termination of the head coach's contract. In the summer of 2019, he took on the role of assistant manager at Black Leopards under Lionel Soccoia, but the duo was dismissed from their positions on 17September, 2019. In 2023, Mabedi was appointed the head coach of the Malawi national team however he was fired a year later over the team's poor results. New assistant coach for Chippa
Chippa United have added another dimension to their major revamp with the appointment of Musa Nyatama as the club ' s new assistant coach. Former Leruma United coach Nyatama, 37, of Benoni, will work alongside newly appointed head coach Sinethemba Badela, 35, who replaced Thabo September. The Chilli Boys announced the appointment in via a statement on their social media platforms. 'Nyatama, being a decorated former footballer himself, brings recent coaching experience from Moroka Swallows DC and Laruma United FC and is widely regarded for his professionalism, modern football mindset and leadership qualities,' the statement said. 'The club believes Nyatama will blend seamlessly with head coach Sinethemba Badela — both young, ambitious, and aligned in their football philosophies. 'Their shared energy and fresh approach represent a new era for Chippa United, focused on entertaining football, intensity and results. Club chair Siviwe 'Chippa' Mpengesi also welcomed the new assistant coach. 'We believe the combination of coach Badela and coach Nyatama will bring a renewed spirit and tactical sharpness to our squad. This is a bold and progressive step for the club,' he said. According to the statement, Nyatama will work closely with the first team technical staff, focusing on tactical planning, player development and overall squad growth. The club also said the former Orlando Pirates midfielder ' s appointment reflected the club ' s ongoing commitment to empowering young football minds and strengthening its football identity, both on and off the pitch. Last week, Chippa released 15 players before the new season and three others will return to their clubs after their loan agreements ended. The following players will not be part of the team heading into the new campaign: Darren Johnson, Lukhanyo July, Justice Chabalala, Samkelo Jali, Andile Jali, Baraka Majogoro, Athenkosi Dlala, Ronald Sanou, Craig Martin, Ronald Maarman, Thobani Jacobs, Sifiso Mazibuko, Aviwe Mqokozo, Enock Sakala, Bienvenu Eva Nga. The club said that on-loan players Aphelele Teto, Siphelo Baloni and Sonwabile Khumalo would return to their parent clubs after the conclusion of their loan agreements. Chippa also announced the appointment of Sinesipho Mali as the new sporting director, a position held by Morgan Mammila last season. Mali served in key technical roles at Kaizer Chiefs as an analyst and later at Sekhukhune United, where he operated as both analyst and head of recruitment, helping guide the club to its highest-ever points tally in the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership. He now serves as head of analysts for Bafana Bafana, a role he will continue in as the national team prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations and conclude their Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign.
