Human names top the trend for cats and dogs in 2025
Human names top the trend for cats and dogs in 2025 People are now naming their pets Kevin, Gary and Barbara The research showed a healthy sense of humour amongst pet owners in the UK People names are dominating the trend for cats and dogs in 2025 with pets now often named Dennis, Kevin, Gary, Dorothy or Barbara. Pet Health Club has listed the top 10 dog and cat names, as pet ownership gets set to soar over the summer months. The team at Pet Health Club analysed data from across their nationwide network of over 800 vet practices, finding that pet parents are opting for the name Bella most frequently for dogs, whilst Luna is the number one name for cats. Vets found a definite trend for celebrity-inspired names, from Doja and Elvis to Drake, Shakira and Kendall, as well as the full monikers of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus. Traditionally 'human' names also remain a firm favourite, with some surprising options. Names like Dennis, Kevin, Gary, Dorothy and Barbara all featured among the top 10 for dogs and cats. Characters from movies, books, video games and TV shows were also well represented with the top 20 including Loki, Thor, Leia, Bilbo, Frodo, Zelda, Batman, Hermione, Chewbacca, Hulk and even Pikachu. The research also showed a healthy sense of humour amongst pet owners in the UK, with witty names like Albus Dumbledog, Artemus Growl, Sherlock Bones and Bartholomeow appearing on the list. Holly Mckinley, Senior Vet at Pet Health Club, said: 'We often see a surge in new puppies and kittens being welcomed into families over the summer months, with people having more time to spend at home with a new pet and the weather being better. 'As vets who work with millions of much-loved pets all year round, we've heard our fair share of unusual names, but it was still interesting to see a few weird and wonderful ones crop up in our analysis. Even our eyebrows raise when we welcome a Bulldozer or Mozzarella into the examination room. 'What's lovely to see is that pet names are really important to owners – it becomes an extension of their personality and can be part of the bonding process with their puppy or kitten. After all, learning their name is a very important stage of a pet's early training and socialisation, and makes them feel like they belong in your 'pack'. Lekker Brekker Monday: Melty cheese & onion toasties in your air fryer
Leave the sandwich maker in the cupboard and heat up the air fryer for these crisp and golden toasted sarmies. An air fryer turns out perfect toasted sandwiches, if you follow a few simple rules. I made cheese and onion sandwiches – very simple, using shop-bought bread. Use a fancier loaf if you prefer. The onions are sliced and fried in butter in a pan to draw out their sweet aromatic flavours. It's important to grate the cheese finely. Here are my tips: Preheat the air fryer; Use lots of grated cheese to make a satisfyingly cheesy sandwich; Use a cheese that melts well, such as Cheddar, Emmental, Gouda or Mozzarella. A nice stringy 'pull' makes for a better sandwich; Once assembled with the top slice of bread in place, push the sandwich down firmly with your palm; Spray the sandwiches on both sides with cooking oil spray before putting them in the air fryer; Cook the sandwiches in the air fryer long enough for the top and bottom of the toast to be well browned and for the cheese to have melted. It took about 8 minutes at 200°C in my air fryer. Turn half way; and Use 1 cup of cheese or more (when grated) per two sandwiches. Tony's melty cheese & onion toasties in your air fryer (Makes 4 toasted sandwiches) Ingredients 8 slices of white or brown shop-bought bread Butter or canola margarine to spread on the insides of the bread 1 medium onion, sliced 2 Tbsp butter for frying the onions 2 cups grated cheese (I used Cheddar) Salt and black pepper Herbs of your choice (oregano, thyme, marjoram or snipped chives) Spice of your choice (cayenne pepper, paprika, nutmeg, ground coriander) Cooking oil spray A sprig of herb for garnish Method Preheat the air fryer to 200°C. Butter the bread on the insides. Fry the sliced onion in butter and spoon it on four of the buttered slices. Grate the cheese and place it on top of the four slices. Sprinkle salt and black pepper on top. Sprinkle on any spice and scatter any herb leaves of your choice. Place the remaining four slices of bread on top, and press the sandwiches down very firmly with your palm. This is important as it is what keeps the toasted sandwiches intact; without it, the top slice may not 'stick'. Spray the top and bottom slices generously with cooking oil spray. Place in the air fryer and cook at 200°C until you can see that the top slices are crisp and golden. Turn carefully and repeat until the other side looks just as good. Plate them up, with a garnish of herb leaves. DM

Cookbooks on their way out as the nation gets its recipes from TikTok
A glossy hard-back cookbook is deemed too extravagant and expensive by the youth of today who prefer TikTok - and lots of them have never heard of Beef Wellington Cookbooks could soon be a thing of the past as younger generations believe they are outdated. Flicking through gravy-stained pages of recipe books by chefs such as Delia Smith could one day be a distant memory. New findings have shown 88% of youngsters get recipe ideas from social media sites such as Tik Tok. Some 38% of people in their twenties said they didn't own a cookbook, while 56% said all the recipes they need are online. Findings by Mozzarella makers Galbani showed 36% believe they are too expensive when recipes are free on the internet. TikTok, Instagram, parents and food websites were the go-to destinations for what and how to cook. And traditional recipes are also dying out, with 42% admitting they have never heard of Beef Wellington. Fish pie, souffle and Coq au Vin were also dishes youngsters didn't know how to make. Galbani said they have been replaced by foods such as burger bowls, pizza soup, marry me chicken - a viral creamy casserole, watermelon and burrata salad, big mac tacos, cucumber salad and vodka pasta. They said: "As many as 90 percent think modern Brits are more adventurous with their food than previous generations."

Pizza Week 2025: Brickhouse Pizza Company
OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Our Special Pizza Correspondent Mike Tanzini is clocking in for one more shift at an Owego pizza spot where all eyes are on the oven. When Rick Tricolla decided that it was time to slow down from the pizza business and move upstate, he wasn't planning on pounding any more dough. But those plans didn't last long. 'To be honest with you – we were semi-retired, and we found a need. I always loved wood-fired brick oven pizza, and I couldn't find one in the Greater Owego and Binghamton area that so we decided to take the plunge again,' said Tricolla. A lifelong pizzamaker and business owner, Tricolla has operated woodfire pizzerias in Brooklyn and on Long Island. While each pizza ingredient has a big role to play, the oven is the star of the show. 'The cooking, the flavor, it just can't be matched with a gas oven. Some people use gas, propane and wood. It's just not the same. We are strictly wood. I think it shows in the final product,' said Tricolla. So, Tricolla set out to find his next woodfire location and stumbled a vacant storefront along 17-C in Owego. 'I literally tripped over this. I was driving by and just tripped over it. The landlord was a nice fellow and it had some parking, so we decided to take a shot,' said Tricolla. Tricolla opened Brickhouse Pizza Company last fall and rolled out his menu of custom, personal 12-inch pies featuring unique flavor combinations and fresh ingredients. 'They're all cooked individually to order. There's a little bit of a char to it that people aren't used to. It's a totally different product than what standard pizza is defined as,' said Tricolla. And, so far, customers are loving the woodfire variation. 'I wasn't sure how people would react to it but overwhelmingly, people really enjoy the different combinations of vegetables, cheeses and meats. Specialty orders don't upset us. If anyone wants a custom pizza, we're glad to accommodate,' said Tricolla. It all starts with the dough, which is made up of several blends of flour. Once it's mixed, cut, and weighed, it goes into a 24 to 36 hour fermentation period. And, for those keeping score at home… 'And a 65% hydration for people who know what I'm talking about,' said Tricolla. The dough is stretched out, and unfortunately, my dough is looking stressed out. 'We're on step 2 and we're already in contingency salvage mode.' Now, we add the sauce, made up of California, San Marzano, and a few other types of tomato. Fresh herbs and spices are added to enhance the sauce's vibrant flavor. We top it off with freshly grated Grande brand Mozzarella, commonly known as the Holy Grail of pizza cheeses. Tricolla says the fresh, quality ingredients he uses really makes his pies stand out. 'In the end, a lot of people try to cut corners, but we use premium and the best products on the market. Everything is made daily. It's a little more work, it's a little more expensive, but I believe everybody tastes the difference,' said Tricolla. We place our pies in the 750-degree oven, and before long, we are ready to pull it out. 'When I was doing my research and homework, I got a pizza insurance policy under Jim's name. Let's see if we'll need it here. Nice and easy. Alright! Jim doesn't need to know about the insurance. We're all good.' It's break time on my first day so why not have a quick slice with the guys? 'Richard, Rick, thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of the Brickhouse Pizza Company family today. Cheers! Perfetto! Well, time to get back to work.' Has your favourite product vanished from shelves? We'd love to hear from you - email us on money@ PIZZA THAT Family favourite pizza brand axes popular flavour from all UK supermarkets and shoppers are 'gutted' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FAMILY favourite pizza brand sold in major supermarkets has been axed, leaving shoppers devastated. Dr. Oetker's Pizza Pollo has now permanently disappeared from supermarket shelves. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Dr Oetker Ristorante Pizza Pollo has been discontinued The savoury delight came with a tomato base and was topped with chicken, sweetcorn and herbs. It cost around £3 and was found in the frozen aisle of supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Iceland. Eagle-eyed customers took to social media to find out what happened to the Italian-inspired dish. Writing on X, one customer said: "I cannot find your pizza pollo anywhere anymore. "I am absolutely gutted as it was my fave. Has it been discontinued???" A spokesperson confirmed in a response to the customer that the pizza flavour was no more. They said: "Our Pollo pizza has been discontinued in the UK, but we'll let our pizza experts know that you want it back! Thanks." The move will come as a blow to shoppers who in the past described it as "delicious." Another shopper said the pizza was their "family's favourite". They said: "The amount of tomato and cheese is just right on the base then you get the toppings of chicken and spinach which are delicious." Beloved pizza chain to close down for good in just weeks after 54 years Dr. Oetker still has a range of flavours available to customers, including Mozzarella and Hawaiian. The news comes in the same week pizza lovers were told that Domino's Ultimate Chicken Mexicana Pizza was axed. The menu option combined spiced pulled chicken, juicy tomatoes, crunchy onions, spicy jalapenos and green and red peppers, topped with a spiced mayo drizzle. However, Domino's has now confirmed it has been dropped from menus. MORE DISCONTINUED FOOD Foodies were also devastated to learn that Greggs has axed two menu items. The Chargrill Chicken Oval Bite and Spicy Veg Curry Bake are no longer being sold in stores. Elsewhere, Sticky soy sauce has now permanently disappeared from the Wetherspoon menu. The Asian-inspired dip, which was often served with breast bites, was a popular choice amongst diners. Spoons has also cut steak, mixed grills and gammon from menus across the country in a cost-cutting shake-up. But it is not all bad news for punters as the chain has launched a range of new Gourmet Burgers. Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink.
