Nelson Mandela's legacy honoured with free medical procedures
Patient Zillah Vadivaloo with Mrs South Africa finalist Sarah Bond. Image: Supplied AS PART of its UniversalCare@Busamed programme, Busamed has honoured the legacy of Nelson Mandela by turning compassion into action during Mandela Month. Its hospitals across the country performed 67 free medical procedures - a symbolic tribute to the 67 years that Madiba dedicated to making a difference. What made this initiative especially powerful was the spirit behind it. Many of the staff stepped outside of their usual roles, volunteering their time and skills to reach those who needed it most - from surgical teams to administrative support. At Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, three free surgeries were performed. In a statement, the hospital said: "M Rajkumar lived with lower GI bleed and due to life changing surgery performed by general surgeon Dr Z Moolla, he can now live a pain free life. Miss C Chetty would have had to wait until 2027 to have hip surgery but surgery was performed by an orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital. She now looks forward to living a normal life. "Mrs Z Vadivaloo has a 33 year old son who has spastic quadriplegic paralysis with cortical blindness and is bedridden. All of his care was dependent on his mum. Due to her over the years picking him up, she could not manage with the pain on her right knee. But following a procedure, her quality of life and the quality of her son's life will improve." The hospital said the initiative aligned with its mission to build a healthier, more inclusive South Africa by increasing access to quality healthcare and supporting communities in meaningful and lasting ways. Tzaneen's Manani Botes makes Mrs South Africa top 30
LIMPOPO – Manani Botes from Tzaneen has been named one of the top 30 finalists in the Mrs South Africa competition. The announcement was made last week at Hotel Sky in Sandton, Johannesburg. A popular Jacaranda FM radio presenter, Botes describes the achievement as 'amazing' and dedicates it to women who have given up on their dreams and those working to create change in their communities. Last year, Botes progressed to the top 100 in the competition. The journey to the top 30 began during the semi-finals week from July 2-4. Over three intense days, semi-finalists participated in leadership roundtables, mentorship sessions, interviews, and a live showcase at the Theatre of Marcellus. The following days, July 5-6, included workshops on media relations, business, and social responsibility, along with a professional photo and video shoot to build their personal brands. 'This programme has been a life-changing journey of growth, self-discovery, and sisterhood,' said Botes. 'It pushed me beyond my comfort zone and reminded me of the strength I carry as a woman, a mother, and a leader. I've learned to embrace my story, use my voice with purpose, and stand confidently in who I am.' Looking ahead, Botes will host the 'Paws with Purpose' charity event to raise funds for the South African Animal Cancer Association (SAACA), one of Mrs South Africa's official charities. 'Animals don't have a voice, but we do. Supporting this cause means standing up for the vulnerable and creating a kinder world, one paw at a time,' she said. 'As a mother and community leader, I believe teaching compassion starts with how we treat all living beings.' Originally from Giyani, Botes grew up in Modjadjiskloof and attended Modubatse Secondary School. She is married to Charlton Botes and has a son, Nathan. Her career shifted from luxury car sales to radio after winning a presenter search at Jacaranda FM. Since then, she has become a prominent voice, inspiring many with her story. The Tzaneen beauty will compete at Emperor's Palace in November, with preliminaries on November 13 and the crowning ceremony on November 14. Women aged 20 to 32 are now eligible to enter — a shift from the previous rule that limited contestants to those turning 30 during their reign. In addition, transgender and married women, as well as mothers, are now eligible, and there are no height or weight specifications or requirements. The announcement was followed by a wave of online entries, with public figures such as actresses Mulisa Mudau and Nirvana Nokwe among those who entered. Despite the delay in announcing the Top 30, organisers say preparations for the 2025 crowning are progressing well. 'The organisers of the Miss SA contest are making good progress with preparations for the Miss SA contest, which will be a huge success. 'Miss SA is grateful to Stephanie for the work she did whilst she was CEO of the organisation,' the statement concluded. NOW READ: Jonathan Roxmouth's going Broadway

WATCH: ‘It's messy': Minnie Dlamini opens up about divorce pain
Minnie says she was treated like a 'pariah' after announcing her split. Television personality Minnie Dlamini has opened up about the emotional toll of her divorce. Dlamini was a recent guest on The Motherhood Podcast, hosted by her childhood friend Nandi Madida. In the episode, set to air this Thursday, Dlamini opened up about how her divorce marked a turning point in both her personal and professional life. 'That's where I realised the fundamental shift in how people were treating me in this business. Forget everything that I have done professionally, forget the name that I have built… 'Then I announced my divorce, and that's when people felt they were at liberty to disrespect me. It absolutely broke me,' she said. Dlamini said she was shocked by the negative reaction she received following the announcement of her split. 'I thought in this day and age, this is what we still have to deal with. We have to deal with being a pariah because a relationship did not work.' ALSO READ: Nandi Madida creating a village for moms with new podcast 'The Motherhood Network' Minnie Dlamini: 'Divorce is difficult and painful' Dlamini also spoke about the harsh reality of divorce, saying it is difficult and painful. 'The thing that people don't talk about is how difficult it is. It is difficult, painful, ugly, and messy. You go from loving this person to being your arch-nemesis. It is a horrible experience. There is nothing about it that is great.' She added that the situation becomes even harder when a child is involved. 'People co-parent successfully, some people don't — it's not pretty. But what is pretty is you get another shot at love again… and at you again.' Dlamini was married to TV producer and director Quinton Jones. In February 2022, the pair issued a joint statement confirming their divorce. They have one son together. NOW READ: All eyes on the crown: Mrs South Africa reveals 2025 top 30 finalists [PICS]
