Mubi has acquired rights to Park Chan-wook's No Other Choice for a good chunk of the world, including Latin America, the UK, Ireland, Benelux, Spain, Turkey, India, Australia/New Zealand, and South East Asia. Cinéart will handle the theatrical release in Benelux in partnership with Mubi. The acquisition follows Neon's announcement yesterday that it had secured North American rights to the film. Mubi and Neon have been sympatico on several arthouse titles this year. In Cannes, Mubi nabbed multiple international rights on Jafar Panahi's Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident, Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent, and Oliver Laxe's Sirat, all of which Neon has for domestic release. "Smashing Machine", "After the Hunt", "Bugonia" Eyed for Venice 2025 Lineup
Yara Sameh Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Emma Stone, and Emily Blunt are among the stars featured in hotly anticipated new movies expected to launch from the 2025 Venice Film Festival. With one month to go until the Lido lineup is unveiled, Venice's artistic director, Alberto Barbera, is racing against the clock to assemble the festival's 82nd edition, slots for which are still in flux, what's clear, however, is that there will be no shortage of the type of buzzy titles that make Venice a prime awards season driver. Benny Safdie's 'The Smashing Machine,' featuring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champ Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino's #MeToo-themed thriller 'After the Hunt' starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield; and 'Bugonia,' the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone — who were last at the fest in 2023 with the Oscar-winning 'Poor Things' — are all likely to be set for a Venice sendoff. Angelina Jolie, after being on the Lido last year with Pablo Larraín's 'Maria,' should also be back in Venice with Alice Winocour's drama 'Couture,' set in the Paris fashion world. Netflix looks likely to be on the Lido with Noah Baumbach's comedy-drama 'Jay Kelly,' starring George Clooney as its enigmatic titular character, and also with Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein,' a new take on the classic monster movie with Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth. Another Netflix film that could surface at Venice is 'A House of Dynamite,' the next feature by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker,' 'Zero Dark Thirty') with a cast comprising Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso, and Jared Harris. The official logline reads: 'When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.' As Mubi boss Efe Cakarel revealed, Jim Jarmusch's triptych picture 'Father Mother Sister Brother,' starring Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver, is also believed to be up for a Lido competition slot. Mubi may also be launching Paolo Sorrentino's new movie 'La Grazia,' led by 'The Great Beauty' star Toni Servillo, from Venice if it's ready in time. Italian titles considered shoo-ins for Lido competition debuts include 'Duse,' Pietro Marcello's biopic about legendary Italian stage diva Eleonora Duse, played by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi; and 'Below the Clouds,' the new high-profile doc by Gianfranco Rosi, whose 'Sacro GRA' scooped the 2013 Venice Golden Lion. 'A Year of School' by rising auteur Laura Samani, who made a splash with 'Small Body' in 2021, is expected to surface somewhere in the official selection. Titles in the mix from Asia include Fan Bingbing-starrer 'Mother Bhumi' from Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun and Park Chan-wook's new film 'No Other Choice.' As previously announced, two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne will preside over the main jury. The 82nd edition of Venice will run August 27-September 6. Twin Peaks at 35: ‘We broke all the rules — and people were horrified'
As the ground-shifting murder mystery series and its belated sequel arrive on Mubi, its co-creator Mark Frost speaks to Adam White about upsetting and offending the television establishment, that notorious second-season dip, and the death of David Lynch Allegedly, American television did exist before Twin Peaks. But there is an undeniable chop down the middle of it, with the likes of Lucy Ricardo, JR Ewing and Captain Kirk on one side, and on the other the body of Laura Palmer – the most beautiful phantom in the world, murdered, wrapped in plastic and burning with secrets. Nothing was quite the same after she washed up on the side of that riverbank in April of 1990. Twin Peaks co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost destabilised the entire television landscape with a series that was a murder mystery, a soap, a comic pastiche of the American heartland and your worst, weirdest nightmare all at once. 'There were only three networks back then,' says Frost today. 'TV was designed to sell you products in the commercial breaks, then lull you into a state of sleep.' But a murdered girl, he and Lynch thought: 'What if she was a trojan horse? And what if once we were indoors, inside our little horse, we could wait until everybody fell asleep and climb out and get to work?'

Twin Peaks pop-up in London abruptly scrapped as full cult series hits streaming
Fans of Twin Peaks were left disappointed today after Mubi abruptly postponed its much-anticipated dining experience in London – just 24 hours before it was set to open. The pop-up, inspired by the cult show's iconic Double R Diner, was due to take over the New River Café in Stoke Newington on June 18. The event was part of a wider celebration by the boutique streaming platform marking Twin Peaks' 35th anniversary and its long-awaited arrival on Mubi's platform. However, on June 17, Mubi took to social media to announce the sudden postponement: 'We wanted to let you know that unfortunately we will be postponing tomorrow's Twin Peaks diner experience,' the post read. 'We're so sorry for the short notice and hope to bring this back in the future.' No official reason was given for the last-minute change, though it comes amid controversy surrounding a recent investment deal. Earlier this month, Mubi faced backlash for accepting a $100million investment from Sequoia Capital, a firm linked to Israeli defence technology companies. It remains unclear whether the Twin Peaks diner experience will be rescheduled. For now, fans will have to settle for indulging in the surreal mystery from the comfort of their own homes. Finally, all three chapters of the acclaimed series are now available to stream in full on Mubi. That includes the original two seasons (1990–1991), the prequel film Fire Walk With Me, and Twin Peaks: The Return, the 2017 sequel helmed once again by David Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost. Starring Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Sherilyn Fenn, and Lara Flynn Boyle, the show follows the investigation into the murder of small-town teen Laura Palmer and the eerie, supernatural forces swirling beneath the surface of the town of Twin Peaks. More Trending Beloved for its genre-defying weirdness, unforgettable characters, and unsettling atmosphere, Twin Peaks became a global phenomenon and remains one of the most influential shows of all time. Following the death of David Lynch, fans are thrilled that the series is finally available to stream in full. Mubi's funding backlash reveals a crisis in indie film culture
Indie streamer Mubi raised a staggering $100 million from Sequoia Capital. Then, fans started boycotting. Mubi built a loyal audience of cinephiles through breakout hits like The Substance and Decision to Leave. But after subscribers examined investor Sequoia Capital's portfolio, many took to X to denounce the streamer. They pointed to Sequoia's ties to Israel's military campaign in Gaza, highlighting its investments in the Israeli defense tech startup Kela. Even after Mubi issued a public statement, its social media remains flooded with Palestinian flags and posts about canceled subscriptions. Even after Mubi issued a public statement, its social media remains flooded with Palestinian flags and posts about canceled subscriptions. The crisis raises broader questions about the financial forces shaping the indie film world. Mubi's money crisis Founded in 2007, Mubi coasted for a decade on a loyal base of cinephiles. Then, the distributor's films began breaking out, most notably with The Substance, the $80-million-grossing body horror starring Demi Moore. Between 2016 and 2025, Mubi jumped from 100,000 to 20 million subscribers. That growth enabled the company to invest in more films. At the 2025 Cannes festival, Mubi was a top buyer, acquiring titles like The Sound of Falling and the Jennifer Lawrence-led Die My Love.
