Ropeway in Himachal Pradesh becomes lifeline for flood-hit Mandi

The Mata Baglamukhi Ropeway becomes the lifeline of the Pandoh area of the Mandi district after a cloudburst and resultant floods washed away most of the roads and bridges. Ropeway in Mandi has become a crucial mode of transport, with over 5,000 people using the service in recent days.(PTI/Representational Image) The government is providing free ropeway transportation to people from all 12 panchayats of the Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi district, ensuring continued connectivity and support during the crisis. The resident manager of RTDC (Ropeways and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation), Kush Vaidya, said that the ropeway in Mandi district has become a crucial mode of transport for residents affected by flash floods, with over 5,000 people using the service in recent days. Vaidya said the facility, initially free for two panchayats, is now available at no cost to all 12 panchayats of Seraj Vidhan Sabha on the direction of the Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. Though the ropeway spans just 750 meters, it helps residents avoid a difficult 12-kilometre journey due to damaged roads. Though the total length of the Ropeway is 750 meters but people use it to avoid a 12 Km travelling." A resident of Saraj, Bhoop Singh said that the ropeway has become a lifeline after roads and bridges were washed away. Singh said has provided crucial relief in these difficult times, helping people transport essential supplies when all other routes are blocked. "This ropeway has helped us a lot. If we did not have this, we would have been totally helpless. After this grave disaster, all our roads and paths have been washed away, restricting vehicular and foot movement. Bridges have also been washed away. It was because of Jairam Thakur that this ropeway was built, and it is helping us in these testing times. We use it to carry essentials and supplies on our backs. It's been a huge relief during this disaster," Singh said. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed significant devastation since the onset of the monsoon, with 91 people losing their lives between June 20 and July 10, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). In its latest Cumulative Loss Report, the SDMA noted that 55 of the deaths were directly attributed to rain-related disasters such as landslides, cloudbursts, flash floods, drowning incidents, and electrocution. An additional 36 deaths occurred in road accidents triggered or worsened by adverse weather conditions.

Himachal landslide: death toll climbs to 80 amid ongoing rescue ops; damages estimated at Rs 692 crore so far

Amid incessant rainfall, the death toll due to cloudbursts and landslides in Himachal Pradesh climbed to 80. Of these, 52 people died in rain-related incidents and 28 others due to accidents, new agency ANI reported, citing a report by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Majority of the fatalities have been directly attributed to landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts. Mandi district remained the worst-hit due to the heavy rains in Himachal this monsoon, reporting 17 rain-related deaths. The SDMA report took stock of incidents from June 20 to July 7, attributing 28 deaths to 'other causes' including electrocution, snake bites, and falls from steep terrain. 'As per cumulative data compiled till July 7, the state has recorded 80 deaths–52 from rain-induced incidents, 28 from road accidents,' an SDMA official said, as quoted by the report. According to the report, 128 people were left injured due to the rains. 320 houses fully damaged, 38 partially damaged, and 10,254 livestock and poultry deaths were reported in Himachal during the period of 17 days. Public infrastructure sustained a damage of over Rs 692 crore due to the rains. Search and rescue operations are still underway in Himachal, with drones and sniffer dogs deployed to rescue the dozens of people still missing due to the flash floods and landslides in the state. About 250 personnel from the National and State Disaster Response Forces, Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Home Guards, along with the administration and locals, are undertaking the search and rescue work. Several leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, state BJP chief Rajiv Bindal, and several cabinet ministers have visited the affected areas. According to the state government, 241 water supply projects were damaged in the affected areas, including the largest scheme worth Rs 121 crore in the Seraj and Balichowki areas. As light to moderate rain continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh over the weekend, the local MeT office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain at isolated places in four districts of Una, Hamirpur, Solan and Sirmaur districts till Wednesday. 72 people killed as monsoon rain wreaks havoc in Himachal Pradesh: Deputy CM

In the light of the cloudburst and flash-flood-affected area of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, on Sunday, highlighted that about 72 people have died and Mandi has faced a lot of loss. Nearly 72 people have lost their lives. The epicentre of this is Mandi, which suffered a lot of loss. The state government has geared up a lot of machinery, and we are restoring roads, water supply and electricity on a large scale," said Agnihotri. He further said, " Though it is a challenge, Himachal Pradesh's officers and workers are working with the government with full force, rising above politics. we have established relief camps with food facilities and officers deployment. Simultaneous cloudburst happened and alerts are still coming in. We are making all efforts to keep our people safe." Several parts of Himachal Pradesh are affected by public utilities, with 269 roads blocked, 285 electricity transformers disrupted, and 278 water supply schemes rendered non-functional in the last 48 hours, as stated by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SECO). Kullu district was the second most impacted area in terms of road access, with 39 roads blocked in sub-divisions like Banjar and Nirmad, owing to rainfall-triggered obstructions. Meanwhile, Chamba reported 32 blocked roads and 17 damaged transformers across its subdivisions, including Salooni, Dalhousie, and Bharmour. In line with the same news, SEOC, despite widespread rainfall and localised disruptions to public utilities across Himachal Pradesh, the water levels in all major dams remain within safe operational limits. Alongside this, the hydroelectric power generation continues mainly uninterrupted. In SEOC's daily Dam status Report, issued on July 6, it confirmed that "the current pond levels of all dams are within permissible operational limits," offering reassurance amid concerns over heavy inflows and potential flood risks in the state's river basins. The heavy monsoon showers have triggered landslides, waterlogging, and infrastructure damage, disrupting road connectivity and essential services across multiple districts," the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said. "Efforts are underway to restore services swiftly, and field teams are on alert in highly affected regions such as Mandi and Kullu, SDMA added further.
