Pakistan arrests two for defrauding citizens with fake jobs in Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom

KARACHI: Pakistani authorities have arrested two men accused of human smuggling after they defrauded citizens with false promises of jobs in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, officials said on Saturday, as the country intensifies its crackdown on trafficking networks following a series of deadly migrant boat disasters. The arrests, made by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Multan, come amid Pakistan's broader campaign to curb human smuggling. The issue has drawn significant attention following recent tragedies in the Mediterranean, including shipwrecks off Greece, Libya and Morocco involving scores of Pakistani nationals. 'The accused, Muhammad Muzammil and Sher Khan, extorted large sums of money from citizens by falsely promising overseas employment opportunities,' the FIA said in a statement. 'Muzammil took Rs852,000 [$2,982] from a victim under the pretense of securing a job in Saudi Arabia, while Sher Khan collected Rs2 million [$7,000] by offering fake employment in the UK,' it continued. 'Both failed to deliver and went into hiding after collecting the money.' The statement noted that the suspects were also involved in visa fraud. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to crack down on the criminal networks exploiting vulnerable people with false hopes of better lives abroad. His administration began focusing on the issue after more than 200 Pakistanis were presumed dead in a shipwreck off Greece among hundreds of other illegal migrants trying to reach European shores. Earlier this year, over 40 Pakistanis were feared drowned near Morocco's coast, while the International Organization for Migration said at least 60 migrants, including Pakistanis, were feared dead after a pair of shipwrecks off the coast of Libya in June. The FIA said on Saturday that both suspects were arrested from separate locations in Multan and have been taken into custody for further investigation. It added that its crackdown on human smugglers remains ongoing.

Pakistan arrests suspects in visa fraud targeting job seekers hoping to reach Gulf, Europe

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday arrested three individuals, including a woman, for allegedly defrauding job seekers by promising employment in Gulf countries and Europe, state media reported. The arrests were made during raids in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Multan, and Lodhran. The suspects, identified as Abid Hussain, Hira Noor and Ajmal, are accused of collecting large sums from citizens in exchange for fake overseas job arrangements. 'These suspects were arrested for their involvement in visa fraud and human smuggling,' the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) news agency said, adding all three went into hiding after failing to deliver on their promises. The report further said Abid Hussain received Rs800,000 ($2,800) from one victim for a job in Saudi Arabia. Hira Noor allegedly took over Rs2.9 million ($10,150) from another individual, promising work in Europe. Ajmal is accused of charging Rs400,000 ($1,400) to arrange employment in Dubai. The arrests come amid renewed efforts by Pakistan to crack down on human smuggling networks after a series of deadly boat tragedies in recent years involving Pakistani nationals trying to reach Europe as undocumented migrants. Despite enforcement drives, criminal syndicates continue to exploit economically vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad.

Joe Root's career in numbers after becoming England's record ODI run-scorer

History repeated itself for Joe Root on Sunday as he became England's record one-day international run-scorer by making his career-best score in the format. It matches his achievement in Test cricket last year and here, the PA news agency looks at his latest statistical achievement. Deja vu Root's long pursuit of Sir Alastair Cook's record 12,472 Test runs for England reached its climax in October's first Test against Pakistan in Multan when he moved his innings on to 70. He continued the following day to reach 262, passing his previous Test best of 254 to claim the record in memorable style – and remarkably repeated the feat in ODIs with Sunday's match-winning innings. Going into the game needing 42 to pass Eoin Morgan's record 6,957 ODI runs for England, he ticked off that mark before his 11th boundary of the innings took him past 7,000 for his career. He passed his previous best ODI score of 133 with a six off Justin Greaves in the 41st over and finished on 166 not out, moving to 7,082 career ODI runs, as England chased down 309 to win by three wickets with seven balls to spare. Root's record Root has over 20,000 runs for England across all formats, having been a key man for his country since his Test debut in December 2012. His Test total moved past 13,000 with his 34 in the recent win over Zimbabwe, after which he has 13,006 at an average of 50.80 in 153 matches. He averages 49.18 in ODIs and, while he has not played a T20 international since 2019 and made just 893 runs in 32 appearances, he averages a respectable 35.72 in the sprint format. Sunday was Root's 18th ODI century to go with 36 in Tests, a total of 54. He also has a further 112 international half-centuries to his name – 65 in Tests, 42 in ODIs and five in T20s. Root's underrated off-spin has brought him 71 Test wickets, 28 in ODIs and six in T20s for a total of 105.

Pakistan and India once connected over cricket. Those days are long gone

There was, said one traveller I contacted, a sense of relief when they touched down safely. The entire contingent of English overseas players in the Pakistan Super League — plus overseas commentators, television crew, coaching staff and other foreign players who did not need a visa for Dubai — were on the Friday night flight from Pakistan, which began at the Nur Khan airbase just outside Islamabad, going via Multan to pick up those, such as David Willey, who were stationed there. What unsettles cricketers more than anything in these situations is the not knowing. Those I contacted said they were looked after very well, and there was no sense of panic, but the amount of false and fake news propagated through social media added

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Trump said on Truth Social, praising the two countries for "using Common Sense and Great Intelligence." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreement follows extensive negotiations by him and Vice President J.D. Vance with Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif and other top officials. "I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site," Rubio said on X. "We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," he added. The announcement comes after Pakistan launched counterattacks against India Saturday after three of its air bases were struck overnight and the conflict between the arch-foes escalated to dangerous levels. Pakistan's foreign minister also confirmed the ceasefire. There was no immediate comment from India. Pakistan reopened its airspace on Saturday following a ceasefire agreement with India, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) said. "Pakistan's airspace has been fully reopened for all types of flights," said a PAA statement after US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire.
