After Punching Canteen Worker at MLA Hostel, Shiv Sena Legislator Targets South Indians

New Delhi: After a video of a Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad went viral where he is seen punching a canteen worker at the MLA hostel in Colaba for serving him 'stale' food, the legislator went on to target South Indians, claiming they "operated dance bars and ladies bars in Maharashtra" and "ruined its culture and youth." Later, Gaikwad said that he was speaking about the Shetty community, to which the canteen contractor belongs. "The attitude of people from the South towards Maharashtra… look, these ladies bars, dance bars, they have played a role in corrupting our youth and children. They have damaged Marathi culture. Dance bars and ladies bars are not a part of our Marathi culture,," said Shetty, trying to put a Marathi vs South Indian angle into the controversy over his assault on the worker, reported Times of India. Gaikwad claimed that the "Shetty" contractor was his friend, but despite repeated complaints about the sub-standard quality, no action had been taken about food quality at the MLA canteen. The licence of the canteen contractor was later suspended. "Why was a contractor named Shetty given the contract? Give it to a Marathi person. They know what we eat and will give us good quality food," said Gaikwad. "That is why I attacked them," said the MLA, justifying his action. He also said that it was after his attack on the canteen worker that the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) intervened and took action against the contractor. "So what I did may have been wrong, but my intentions were correct, which was proved by the FDA taking action. And if they (canteen management) do it again, I will not deter from beating them up again," said Gaikwad. People from the hospitality industry attached to an association mainly representing the Shetty community's Udipi restaurants and bars have condemned Gaikwad's remarks and rubbished his allegations, the TOI report said. The association members have said that the MLA had no understanding of how their hospitality had been an integral part of Mumbaikars' lives and Marathi culture for over a century.

300-cr bridge to link Coastal Rd at Haji Ali with arterial Parel path

Mumbai: A new elevated road is being proposed to connect Senapati Bapat Marg -- leading towards Phoenix Mills and Kamla Mills -- with the Haji Ali end of Lala Lajpatrai Road, where the coastal road has designated entry and exit points. If it goes as planned, people travelling from the crowded areas of Parel, Dadar, Matunga, and Mahim could soon reach the coastal road near Haji Ali junction within minutes. The proposed six-lane elevated corridor, currently a missing link in the city's east-west connectivity, will skirt along the edge of Mahalaxmi Racecourse and pass near the NSCI Dome. Officials from the urban development department said the project will not require any land acquisition, nor will it disrupt the existing flow of traffic during construction. The viaduct will begin near the coastal road's entry/exit on Lala Lajpatrai Road, pass through open areas alongside the race track and stadia, and land near the E Moses Road end of Senapati Bapat Marg. From there, motorists will have seamless access to Gokhale Road, Lady Jamshed Road, Bhavani Shankar Road, NM Joshi Marg, and onward to key locations like Siddhivinayak Temple, Shivaji Park, Lower Parel, and Mahim. At present, traffic coming from Haji Ali (via Tardeo, Pedder Road, Bhulabhai Desai Road, or the coastal road) must take a long detour through Worli Naka (via Annie Besant Road or Pandurang Budhkar Marg), Nehru Science Centre road, or Keshavrao Khadye Marg-Dr E Moses Road, loop around the racecourse and NSCI Dome to reach Dadar. Southbound traffic from Dadar and Parel must follow the same roundabout route. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, whose office unveiled the proposal in coordination with the public works department (PWD), called the project a transformative move for the city's infrastructure. While implementing agencies are yet to be finalised, the plan has been received positively due to its promise to cut travel time and ease congestion without displacing people or requiring land acquisition. Shinde said: "It is more than just an infrastructure project; it's a visionary step toward Mumbai's future. Our goal is to make the city traffic jam-free. This signal-free corridor will enable smooth, uninterrupted travel. We are committed to building a faster, cleaner MMR that respects Mumbaikars' time and space."

Maha Mumbai Metro achieves record daily ridership of 2.94 lakh

Mumbai: The Maha Mumbai Metro achieved its highest-ever daily ridership on June 18, 2025, with 2,94,681 commuters using the city's Metro Lines 2A and 7. This development marked a new milestone in Mumbai's urban transit journey. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Officials from the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) said, "The record numbers are attributed to the growing trust of Mumbaikars, seamless operations, and the widespread adoption of its digital ticketing system." The official further stated that over 65% of the tickets on that day were booked via the WhatsApp-based ticketing platform, reflecting the success of its technology-driven commuter services. "This achievement is a reflection of Mumbaikars' continued confidence in the metro network and the relentless commitment of our staff. We are grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by our commuters," said a senior MMMOCL official. This surpasses the previous ridership high of over 2.92 lakh recorded on October 8, 2024, the day Mumbai received its new metro connection between Aarey Colony and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Earlier, on June 6, 2024, the network recorded a ridership of 2,60,471 in a single day. Metro Lines 2A and 7, operated by MMMOCL, have become vital cogs in Mumbai's suburban transport ecosystem. The 18.6-km-long Metro Line 2A connects Dahisar to D N Nagar via 17 stations, linking with Metro Lines 1, 2B, and 6. Meanwhile, the 16.5-km-long Metro Line 7 runs from Dahisar East to Andheri East, significantly decongesting the Western Express Highway and integrating with key metro corridors across the city.

59th foundation day of Sena: Shinde sounds BMC poll bugle, says Uddhav Sena looted Mumbai treasury

Sounding the poll bugle for the upcoming elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde accused the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena UBT, which ruled the civic body for over two decades, of looting it and now invoking the 'fight for Mumbai' campaign for 'political gain'. Shinde was referring to Sena UBT MLA and former minister Aaditya Thackeray's recently launched 'ladha Mumbai cha' (fight for Mumbai) campaign. He was speaking at the event to mark the 59th foundation day of Shiv Sena in Worli. 'Just like a demon's life is tied to a parrot, their lifeline is the BMC treasury, and hence they now remember Mumbai and fight for Mumbai, and are making baseless claims of plot to break Mumbai from Maharashtra,' Shinde said, alluding to the Sena UBT. He added, 'Mumbai belongs to Maharashtra. No matter who comes or even if seven generations descend, no one can separate it from the state.' Reaffirming his allegiance to Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray's ideology and referring to the foundation day event of Sena UBT, Shinde said, 'Ours is a gathering of principles, theirs is one of desperation for power. We have preserved Balasaheb's vision, and that's why Shiv Sena is charging ahead.' Taking a dig at Uddhav, Shinde said, 'Even a chameleon takes time to change colour — not these people. Balasaheb once gave up his voting rights for Hindutva but never compromised. Today, those claiming to be his heirs have sold themselves for power.' Referring to Uddhav's remark during the foundation day event of Sena UBT, Shinde said, 'What's the point of hitting someone politically dead? Maharashtra has already killed you in polls.' Recalling a dialogue from the film Prahaar, Thackeray said during a rally, 'Like Nana Patekar in the film, I am standing before these traitors and telling them, Come on, kill me.' 'You were in power all these years, looting the treasury, playing with Mumbaikars' health, and now you remember the Mumbai fight?' he asked. On ongoing investigations into the Mithi River desilting scam, Shinde warned, 'One person(actor Dino Morea) is already being probed — if he starts speaking, many will fall like dominoes. No one will escape the crocodile grip of the Mithi River.' 'Get ready to win,' he told party workers. 'The saffron flag of Mahayuti will fly high over municipal corporations, councils, and village panchayats.' During his address, Shinde announced the launch of a new campaign titled 'Dowry-free Maharashtra' to protect the women facing dowry harrassment. The initiative, spearheaded by Sena's women's wing, comes in the wake of the tragic death of Vaishnavi Hagwane in Pune, allegedly due to dowry harassment. 'Like the daughters of Maharashtra, daughter-in-laws are also like my own sisters. This campaign will begin at Anand Ashram in Thane and expand across the state. Every Sena Shakha will become a second home for women facing dowry-related abuse,' Shinde said. Earlier in the day, Shinde Sena mocked Uddhav Sena for celebrating the party's foundation day, claiming the Sena UBT came into existence only three years ago and should celebrate its foundation day on October 10, 2022, when the Election Commission granted it the name and mashal as its poll symbol.

"Why does BJP want to end Mumbai?": Aaditya Thackeray slams ruling party over city's rain woes, farmer neglect

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 27 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), blaming the ruling party for the dire state of Mumbai following heavy rainfall that led to large-scale waterlogging across the city. Thackeray questioned the Maharashtra government's preparedness for the monsoon and accused it of neglecting farmers affected by the recent downpours. Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Balasaheb Thackeray and Operation Sindoor, Thackeray said, 'All these statements here and there are fine, but Mumbaikars want an answer as to why the BJP has brought Mumbai to this condition -- the condition which we saw yesterday.' 'Why does the BJP have such malice for Mumbai in their mind? Why does the BJP want to end Mumbai? Thousands of hectares have suffered losses due to rain. Why has no help been provided to the farmers? Whether it's Mumbai, Thane or Pune, the situation in several cities is worsening. Why are our cities receiving no help?' he told reporters. Earlier, on Monday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray slammed the Maharashtra government, accusing it of failing to maintain the city's drainage system, which he said had resulted in severe waterlogging after the downpour. Thackery said in a post on X, 'We are seeing absolute absence of governance in Maharashtra today. Mumbai has collapsed in the rains, and it's only May. Last week, it was Andheri Subway and Saki Naka that was flooded. Today, it is South and Central Mumbai facing the brunt of the BMC being controlled by bjp and corrupt mind.' He also visited Worli station, which he claimed had flooded following the rain. Taking a dig at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he said that Mumbaikars' money was being misused as no civic work was being carried out. The city witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, marking the onset of the monsoon. In the western suburbs, Supari Tank and Nariyalwadi Santacruz received the highest rainfall at 25 millimetres (mm), followed by Khar Danda Pali Hill with 24 mm. The Ward Office logged 18 mm, HW Ward Office 16 mm, while Vile Parle and Andheri Fire Stations recorded 15 mm and 14 mm, respectively. Chakal Municipal School and Malvani Fire Station measured 14 mm and 12 mm, with Versova Pumping Station at 11 mm. (ANI)
