Remembering Kendal Calling: the homegrown festival that's flourishing

THIS year marks the 20th anniversary of Kendal Calling, and we're looking back on the festival that put Cumbria on the music map. It has grown from a two-day, 900 capacity festival in 2006 to a 40,000 capacity four-day extravaganza. Crowds gather ahead of Snoop Dogg performing on the main stage Kendal Calling has nine stages and has featured live performances from notable artists such as Blondie, Pendulum, Doves, Dizzee Rascal, James, Mumford & Sons, Calvin Harris and British Sea Power. Wigton group Aimee Kirkbride, Joanne Charters, Gary Armstrong, Trevor Charters, Becky Kirkbride and (front) Mark Armstrong In 2010 it was named the Best Small UK Festival at the UK Festival Awards, as voted by the public. It also won the industry award 'Best Small Festival' at the LIVE UK awards 2011. It had a capacity of 900 with a circus big top housing the majority of the performances. Friends from Appleby watch Less Than Jake perform on the main stage In 2007 it relocated to Grate Farm on the A591 on the outskirts of Kendal and saw an increased capacity of 2,000 with more stages added to accommodate additional artists. The following year saw the festival increase capacity again to 4,000 and extending to three days, with the winner of the Best Urban Act Dizzee Rascal flying in from Ibiza to perform on the opening Friday night only to fly back again straight after the show for a performance back on the island. Hens from Lancaster at Kendal Calling in 2015 In 2009 the festival relocated again, moving to its current home of Lowther Deer Park, near Penrith, and raising its capacity to 6,000. The 20th anniversary festival has Courteeners, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy and Kaiser Chiefs topping the bill. Other big names set to perform this year include Sophie Ellis Bextor, Travis, The Wombats, Frank Turner, Maximo Park, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jason Manford. Fans watch Grandmaster Flash perform in the Glow Tent (Image: Newsquest) Founder Andy Smith described Kendal Calling's growth as 'quite extraordinary'. He said: 'It's become a celebration for people who travel from all over and for the community we're deeply rooted in. Molly Warburton from Lancaster performs on the Woodlands Stage (Image: Newsquest) 'When we started, it was just a group of teenagers with this wild idea of bringing music and arts to the Lakes. 'Now, 20 years on, it's grown beyond anything we could have imagined. Record ticket sales have poured in and it's honestly humbling.'

We live in UK's ‘new Cotswolds' – we kept our lovely village hidden but now fear posh-welly invasion will kill its charm

IT has picture-postcard streets, scenic views, beautiful walks and has been dubbed the new Cotswolds. But residents in an idyllic hamlet are now terrified their beloved village will turn into a posh tourist magnet. 12 Fittleworth in West Sussex has been named one of 2025's Coolest Neighbourhoods To Move To in a list compiled by The Sunday Times. Visitors say the village is the best-kept secret in Sussex but worried locals want it to remain that way. Two hours from London and 25 miles north of Brighton, it is nestled in the South Downs and has just 1,000 residents. Home to a popular old coaching inn, a gallery, a primary school, two churches and a community-owned shop incorporating a cafe and post office, the sprawling village, close to Pulborough, boasts some excellent walks and views. It also has its fair share of celebrities - musicians Bryan Ferry and Dave Gilmour live up the road, while Mumford and Sons bassist, Ted Dwane, is just outside the village. And the late actors Dame Maggie Smith, Dorothy Tutin and Jimmy Edwards all lived in or close to the village during the 1960s and 70s. But residents now fear their idyllic area could become the next 'Chipping Norton,' a dreaded hive of tourist activity with soaring hotel prices, Airbnb conversions and coach-loads of visitors packing the streets. "I hate Chipping Norton," said one elderly resident, who has lived in Fittleworth for 50 years. "It is packed full of tourist coaches and people taking photos of everything. "Someone I know who used to live there moved out when a bunch of tourists traipsed in through her front door and asked for a cream tea. "When she tried to shoo them out, one of them got his camera out and took a picture of her front room! "Fittleworth has so much more to offer. I've been here for 50 years and it is the sense of living in a community that I really like. "I don't want tourist coaches and the like clogging up our roads and ramping up the price of things in our local shops." Fittleworth Village Stores, which opened just six years ago, recently won best village shop in Britain. Toni Humphrey, manager, said: "The root of the success of our village store lies in what it can provide as a community hub. "It appeals to everyone, young and old, and is a real meeting place. It was set up by the community, with residents buying shares into the business, and it has just taken off. "People come here to catch up with friends and to pass on news. We welcome everyone and it's just a very relaxed place." As well as a cafe, kiddies playground and villages stores, it also provides a post office for the community. The shop has nine permanent members of staff and 30 volunteers - and almost 20 teenagers doing work placement. 12 12 Located next to the primary school, it has become an invaluable asset for parents. Janet Claxton, who volunteers at the Village Stores, said: "The village is really alive. There's always something going on here." Meanwhile, The Swan Inn, a Grade II listed coaching house dating back to 15th century, has recently reopened after a huge refurbishment. Formerly brewery-owned, it closed in the Covid pandemic, but after a huge investment is back in business, offering top-notch country pub food and accommodation. Places like Fittleworth are special. It has a lot of charm. Deborah Wright It's owned by Sussex-born restaurateur, Angus Davies, who has masterminded a transformation that has seen visitors coming from far and wide to stay in one of its 12 rooms. Mr Davies, who has worked at other pubs and restaurants including Chez Bruce, Lorne, and Sorrel, said he wants to offer all the comforts of a country pub with top-quality service and experience. The inn has a long and illustrious pedigree. During the late 19th and early 20th century, the beauty of the South Downs attracted writers, musicians and artists. JMW Turner, Rudyard Kipling, Constable, Emmeline Pankhurst and composer Hubert Parry have all signed the visitors book, while composer Edward Elgar lived in a small cottage above the village from 1917 to 1921, where he wrote his final four major works. "I'm proud of what we've achieved here,' said Mr Davies. "It's been a real labour of love. It has an honesty about it and we are getting a lot of interest." But the Swann now has increasing competition in another sign of the village's rising status. Residents have mixed views on the rise in local Airbnbs. A quick survey by The Sun showed 25 in and around the village with some charging as much as £430 a night. They are becoming a magnet for Londoners in particular escaping the city's chaos at weekends and during school breaks. Upper Fittleworth has been the centre of the village since Saxon times and is home to St Mary's Church, parts of which date back to the 1200s. Vicar, Reverend David Crook, said: "There is a really great atmosphere in the village. It's a friendly place and we get a lot of help around the church. "I've been here six years and love it. People chip in and help with the church flowers and we have a very active congregation." Deborah Wright, a church warden who moved to Fittleworth 10 years ago, said: "Places like Fittleworth are special. It has a lot of charm and has a really active community life." Visitors Sylvia Mason and Steve Jarvis had travelled from Chichester to have a look round the village. "I've driven past loads of times but never thought to stop," said Ms Mason. "I heard about it being a really desirable place to live and so we decided to come and have a look. "It's actually very lovely. I don't know the Cotswolds but Fittleworth is really very pretty and the people who live here are so friendly. What more could you ask for?" Up until 2025 the village was a well-kept secret and locals feel that, despite all the recent clamour, it will remain so. 12 Another long-time resident said: "Let Chipping Norton have the tourists. We're happy as we are.' 12 12 12

Woke rocker causes outrage at first concert of biggest US tour since MAGA member was forced out

Marcus Mumford upset fans as he abruptly stopped his concert and launched into a foul-mouthed tirade this week - which was captured in a shock video. The 38-year-old musician is currently on his first US tour with his band Mumford & Sons since former member Winston Marshall departed four years ago in a cloud of controversy after praising a US conservative journalist. During their recent tour kick-off concert in Bend, Oregon, fans were stunned when he stopped the show and stormed off-stage after hurling expletives. A TikTok video of the incident has surfaced where Marcus - who is married to multi-time Oscar nominated actress Carey Mulligan - appears to be focused on something in the crowd as he points something out in the audience. He seemingly says 'sorry, f*** them,' before unstrapping his acoustic guitar and exiting stage left. has reached out to representatives for Marcus and has yet to hear back. The 38-year-old musician is currently on his first US tour with his band Mumford & Sons since Winston Marshall (pictured) departed four years ago after he became the victim of ' Cancel Culture ' when he praised a US conservative journalist - pictured 2019 While it remains unclear why he left the concert abruptly, a few comments on the TikTok seemingly shed some light on the decision. One user wrote: 'People kept getting hurt! He tried to play this song 3x and ended up walking off stage so they could give medical. Never finished the song.' Another said: 'About 3 people passed out in a row. In the same song. So he stopped so they could get help.' Back in October, Marcus led Mumford & Sons to perform at a Kamala Harris rally in Madison, Wisconsin days before she was defeated by current US President Donald Trump in the election. At the time he tried to rally fans to vote for the Democratic candidate as he said: 'I would encourage you to get with your mates, make a voting plan and go out and vote, because every vote will matter you.' Marcus has previously stated that his political views are 'somewhere between centrist and liberal,; Mumford & Sons have not toured since the end of 2019 as they have played several festival gigs from 2023 to 2024. This is also their first tour after guitarist Winston Marshall famously left the band four years ago after sharing his conservative political views. The musician said he was a victim of 'cancel culture' as he was ousted from the band and hounded by fans for sending a tweet to conservative journalist Andy Ngo thanking him for his book, which was critical of Antifa. Marshall, son of multi-millionaire hedge fund manager Sir Paul Marshall, told Ngo: 'Congratulations . . . Finally had the time to read your important book. You're a brave man.' Left-wing social media users immediately piled on to the star, accused him of being a 'fascist.' Before he posed the question of granting asylum to British people convicted on free speech grounds to Leavitt in the White House, Marshall often spoke out about cancel culture within the entertainment industry. In 2022, this included appearing at the Conservative Party Conference, where he slated artists for failing to support free speech, and said his departure from his band the year before would allow him to 'speak freely about political issues.'

Who is the mystery Glastonbury Patchwork guest? Fans think they have figured it out

It is one of the most fun parts of the Glastonbury lead up year after year. Trying to work out which major star could surprise us all with a performance on the Pyramid Stage. Each year organisers hold back on revealing every single detail on who we will see facing the stage, and 2025 is no different. But this year festival fans seem convinced that they have worked out who the mystery 'Patchwork' guest is on the 2025 line-up. The mystery guest plans to perform on the Pyramid Stage from 6pm to 7pm on the Saturday, and so far a number of big name stars and bands have been thrust into the pool of names being debated. Oasis, Mumford And Sons, Sam Fender, Harry Styles, and Lewis Capaldi have all been mentioned, and fans have their reasons for summarising their guesses. Named only as 'Patchwork' on the official line-up, it has led many to think that - despite their protests - it could be Oasis before they kick off their sold out arena tour this summer. One wrote: 'Patchwork? Oasis I know they've said no, but that doesn't carry a great deal of weight... Patchwork... Patching things up... might be a bit of a reach but MY GOD it would be good.' Others pointed to the book named 'Patchwork' by author Sylvia Haim, to suggest it would be the band HAIM while others were left convinced it was Pulp following the release of their latest album: Maybe even more clear a link: "Patchwork is a German book written by a novelist called Sylvia Haim" — Jamie (@BelishaBeacon25) June 3, 2025 @glastonbury @secretglasto My literary wife has pointed out that Patchwork is a novel by Sylvia Haim, suggesting the Saturday pyramid slot is none other than @HAIMtheband .... What do you think? #glastonbury2025 — Tim Street (@Tims_Pants) June 3, 2025 Hoping Patchwork are Pulp, but the connection to Haim seems quite solid. wondering are they that big a deal to be a secret act? Maybe I'm a bit old and just don't know what's hot 😂 — Surreynurse 🌱FBPE (@Surreynurse1) June 3, 2025 Also on the Pulp thing — Sparra (@andysparra) June 4, 2025 Other guesses included old favourites at Glasto, Coldplay: 'Patchwork' at Glastonbury - quite simple - the old favourites of course...#patchwork#coldplay#Glastonbury — Puffguin Esquire (@PuffguinEsquire) June 3, 2025 But some thought it would be a more out there option, such as Harry Styles, because of a famous outfit choice he once made: The secret is out. Remember THAT @JW_ANDERSON patchwork knit cardigan worn by THE @Harry_Styles? We're happy to confirm that the #TikTok trending sensation is joining our fashion collection in 2021. Read more here: — V&A (@V_and_A) November 21, 2020 My guess (the famous patchwork cardigan) — travelmeerkat (@travelmeerkat) June 3, 2025 Others were very honest by the fact that they simply do not have a clue: Me currently trying to figure out who Patchwork are…#Glastonbury #Glasto — Katey (@kateymania) June 3, 2025 So far it's...A book by Sylvia patching things up.A Wombats patchwork Styles patchwork to do with miss-shapes and with patchwork tattoos.A Mudford and Sons song that may or may not in all 🤷‍♂️ — The Glasto Thingy (@TheGlastoThingy) June 3, 2025 But at least fans now only have a few weeks left to wait and see. Glastonbury has revealed the line-up for this year's event as it announced the headline acts which include The 1975 and Olivia Rodrigo. Also on the bill is Biffy Clyro, Rod Stewart, Busta Rhymes, Raye, The Prodigy, Charli XCX and Nile Rodgers and Chic among others.
