TN accelerates plans for waste-to-energy plant in Tambaram to address mounting challenges

Chennai: In a move to address the mounting challenge of solid waste management in Tambaram, the Tamil Nadu government has fast-tracked plans to establish a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant within the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation limits. The initiative, announced during the 2025 State Budget, aims to process the 400 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste generated daily in the region. To take the project forward, the State's Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department has floated a tender inviting consultants to prepare a detailed feasibility report and offer transition advisory services. The WtE facility is expected to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. According to MAWS officials, the proposed site for the plant is the Vengadamangalam dumpyard, which falls under the Tambaram Corporation's jurisdiction. However, consultants will be tasked with conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the site. 'If the location is found to be unfit due to environmental or logistical constraints, the consultant must help identify alternate suitable sites,' an official said. The consultancy assignment includes preparing a master plan for the WtE facility along with associated infrastructure. It will also involve assessing ambient air quality and conducting pollution dispersion modelling based on varied climatic conditions. This environmental due diligence is seen as crucial in light of public opposition to similar projects elsewhere. In Kodungaiyur, for instance, residents have vocally opposed a proposed WtE plant, citing concerns over air pollution and associated health risks. Learning from such resistance, the government is placing greater emphasis on environmental impact studies and community acceptance. The scope of the current tender also includes identifying suitable locations for integrated solid waste processing facilities in Perungudi. These are expected to comprise a bio-CNG plant, a compost facility, and an automated material recovery facility (AMRF) -- all of which are essential for efficient waste segregation and resource recovery. The Tambaram WtE project is being developed in partnership with international funding agencies, including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Germany's KfW Development Bank, which have been supporting Tamil Nadu's urban infrastructure push amid rapid population growth and urbanisation. With sustainability and public health at the core of the project's planning, the state hopes to set a benchmark in modern waste management through this initiative.

TN to take up 3,360 cr worth sewerage projects in 14 corps

Chennai: As part of efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu govt is implementing underground sewerage work worth 3,360 crore across 14 municipal corporations under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0), launched in Oct 2021, aims to ensure universal access to basic urban services such as water supply, sewerage, and sanitation. In TN, cities including Tirunelveli, Vellore, Dindigul, Salem, Cuddalore, and Nagercoil will benefit from the ongoing sewerage work. More than 3,000 km of sewer pipelines will be laid, along with new sewage pumping stations, enabling over five lakh households to shift from septic tanks to a direct underground drainage (UGD) network. Officials from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department said the works are expected to begin within a month and will take around two years for completion across districts. "Deadlines vary by corporation. The UGD network will also help prevent pollution of local rivers," said a senior official. In total, more than 60 local bodies in TN have received project approvals under AMRUT 2.0, with a sanctioned cost of 14,688 crore, including 4,942 crore in central assistance.

Govt will establish STP in Periyanaickenpalayam after identifying suitable land: Minister

Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru on Thursday said the State government will identify a suitable parcel of land and establish a sewage treatment plant (STP) to prevent wastewater from being discharged in a stream flowing through Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat in Coimbatore district. The Minister was responding to a calling attention motion moved by Kavundampalayam MLA P.R.G. Arunkumar who sought the State government to prevent mixing of sewage in a stream in Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat. The Minister said more than 32,000 people live in Periyanaickenpalayam in which there are 10,951 residential buildings, 1,029 commercial establishments and 321 industrial buildings. All houses are equipped with toilet facilities and septic tanks. The commercial establishments, and industrial units in that area have their own sewage treatment mechanisms and no chemical waste, industrial effluents or sludge is directly discharged into streams, he said. In Periyanaickenpalayam town panchayat, a 50 KLD (kilolitres per day) capacity faecal sludge treatment plant was established at a cost of ₹ Rs. 2.48 crore. Efforts are also being made to identify suitable locations for establishing a STP. However, due to non-availability of suitable land the project was delayed. The State government is even ready to purchase private land located outside of residential localities to establish the STP, he added.

T.N. govt. will take steps to expedite drinking water project work in Palani: Minister

Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru on Wednesday (April 23, 2024) informed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly that the State government will expedite measures to complete the pending work on the drinking water supply project in Palani Municipality. He was responding to a calling attention motion moved by MLAs I.P. Senthil Kumar, V.P. Nagaimaali, and M. Chinnadurai, who sought his intervention to expedite the ongoing drinking water supply project in Palani, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. The Minister said in Palani Municipality, under the State Finance Commission Incentive Fund 2023-24, work is being carried out at an estimated cost of ₹18.59 crore for the installation of additional water purification infrastructure at the municipality's summer water reservoir and for laying pipelines to pump water from the main reservoir to the overhead water tank located at the foothills. As part of the drinking water scheme, a 450-mm diameter drinking water pipeline needs to be laid for a distance of 800 metres along the 'Girivalam' path. However, based on a request from the Devasthanam to make alternate arrangements for laying the pipeline in that area, a survey was conducted and it was decided to route the drinking water pipeline along the inner side of the retaining wall situated on the outer part of the Girivala Veethi road. The State government will take expeditious steps to complete the pending work, he added.
