MCD: New dumping began after cleaning Singhola landfill site

New Delhi: Facing criticism for developing a fourth landfill at Singhola after Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, Municipal Corporation of Delhi claimed that it cleared all the deposited silt at the 7.2-acre location through bioremediation by mid-June. Over six months, 7.59 lakh MT of silt was removed. Following the site clearance, the dumping of silt from eight zones—Shahdara North, Shahdara South, Civil Lines, City SP, Rohini, Narela, Keshav Puram and Karol Bagh—started on July 1 as no alternative location was available, officials said. Daily bioremediation and biomining processes were implemented to prevent substantial waste accumulation, they added. In 2018, Delhi Development Authority allotted the land in Khampur village to the erstwhile east corporation for silt disposal. Subsequently, other agencies, including Public works Department and the irrigation & flood control department, also began utilising the site to dump silt collected during their yearly pre-monsoon drainage cleaning operations. "As a result, within five years of the allotment, the land ran out of capacity," said an official. A process to invite tenders started in March 2024 to identify an agencies to implement the task. "MCD awarded the desilting tender in Nov 2024, with 8,000MT of silt reportedly processed daily. The work started after the Supreme Court's direction and the final cost of the project turned out to be Rs 46 crore," said the official. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh added that BJP govt was fully committed to eradicating the mountains of garbage in the city in a time-bound manner and MCD was working diligently to make Delhi clean and green. Most of the silt was earlier sent to Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla landfills, according to officials. Due to the need to decrease the height of these landfills, especially Bhalswa, within fixed timelines, the authorities decided to transfer the silt generated after the cleaning of drains to Singhola.

MCD forms committee to address stray dog menace and implement shelter homes in Delhi

New Delhi: In a move to check the dog menace in the city, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday formed a nine-member committee to ensure the effective implementation of control measures. The panel, to be chaired by Bhati ward councillor Sundar Singh, includes other councillors and senior officials, such as the director and additional commissioner of MCD's veterinary services. In the previous standing committee meeting on July 16, chairperson Satya Sharma had approved a proposal to establish dog shelter homes across all 12 MCD zones. The newly-formed committee will now oversee the rollout of this initiative and draft a comprehensive set of guidelines. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi "The committee will prepare a complete action plan for the construction and operation of these shelter homes. This will include identifying suitable locations, assessing resource requirements, budget estimation, and coordinating with NGOs and expert organisations associated with public health and animal welfare," said Sharma. "The committee will develop suitable models for each zone and submit its report to the standing committee within a month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo It will not only focus on animal welfare, but will also ensure that public safety, sanitation, and health concerns arising from stray dogs are effectively addressed," she said, adding that the panel will work out a practical and sustainable solution. Sharma also highlighted the need for regulatory amendments to facilitate the relocation of stray dogs — an action currently restricted under the existing policy, Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The committee has been directed to examine this legal gap and recommend suitable policy changes. "If required, we will pursue central govt for amendments in the norms," she had stated earlier. The issue of stray dogs has come into focus following a recent incident in Noida, where a resident alleged harassment over feeding dogs in another residential area. The Supreme Court, hearing the case, pointedly asked the petitioner: "Why don't you feed them in your house?" In the previous standing committee meeting, councillors had noted a lack of sterilisations to control the dog population in Delhi as well as the absence of a dog census. An MCD survey of stray dogs has been pending for years. The last census was held nine years ago, conducted by the erstwhile south corporation. In 2016, a survey estimated nearly 1.9 lakh stray dogs in south Delhi, with 40.3% males and 27.8% females reported as sterilised. Officials have acknowledged that with no dog census done for years, it is difficult to ascertain the requirements for sterilisation.

NDMC trains staff to fight vector-borne diseases, holds citywide awareness drives

NEW DELHI: With the monsoon season increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Tuesday conducted a training session for its field and supervisory staff on preventing and containing dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. The training session saw participation from over 250 sanitary inspectors, assistant inspectors, surveillance workers, and officials from the civil and horticulture departments. The initiative aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of frontline workers and promote effective on-ground action. NDMC Secretary Tariq Thomas stressed that prevention, timely treatment, and public awareness were crucial to tackling these diseases. He urged civic staff to focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and promoting hygiene through widespread outreach campaigns. 'Massive awareness drives across NDMC areas, including schools, colleges, public spaces, markets and residential colonies, are the need of the hour,' he said, suggesting the use of street plays, IEC material, mobile vans, SMS alerts, and social media to reach citizens of the capital. Thomas also underlined the importance of empowering ground staff to conduct regular fogging, anti-larval operations, and inspections of both public and private premises. These activities, he said, are vital to disrupting the mosquito life cycle. During the session, Dr. Aditi, Zonal Epidemiologist from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, offered detailed guidance on identifying mosquito species, particularly the Aedes mosquito responsible for dengue. She also spoke about breeding habits, symptoms, and simple preventive measures. Experts at the session noted that while there are no vaccines currently available for dengue and chikungunya, controlling mosquito breeding remains the most effective line of defence. 'Prevention is far easier than cure,' one of them remarked. Dr Shakuntla Shrivastava, Medical Officer of Health, NDMC, expressed confidence that the trained workforce would carry out their duties with greater efficiency following the session.

MCD's ‘One Road – One Day' drive to revamp city streets from September 1

NEW DELHI: In an effort to make the roads of the capital cleaner, safer and more organised, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is launching a special campaign, 'One Road – One Day,' from September 1. Under this campaign, one major road in each zone will be completely revamped every day. The Standing Committee has approved the proposal. Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Satya Sharma, has issued directions to all Additional Commissioners and Zonal Deputy Commissioners to implement the campaign with complete seriousness and commitment so that, by the anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, the transformation of Delhi reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chairperson stated that a nodal officer should be appointed in each zone to prepare the action plan and monitor the implementation of works under the 'One Road – One Day' scheme. A list of roads in each zone should be compiled, and a priority-wise action plan must be developed. Suggestions must also be taken from local councillors and MLAs to ensure the plan addresses ground-level requirements. Zonal Deputy Commissioners will be held accountable and must submit weekly progress reports to the Commissioner. Adequate budgetary provisions must be ensured for proper execution, along with the availability of resources such as mechanical sweepers, fogging machines, tree-cutting tools, new street lights, and more. Photographs and daily progress updates of the revamped roads must be shared on social media platforms to ensure transparency and promote citizen engagement. Roads under the jurisdiction of other agencies like PWD, where MCD handles cleaning, should also be included in the campaign. MCD will execute works falling under its jurisdiction and formally notify concerned departments for other related matters. The Corporation has directed that the following works be carried out mandatorily: road repair and topping, footpath leveling and repair, cleaning and beautification of medians and edges, pruning of trees, painting of grills, repair or replacement of signage, garbage and debris clearance, streetlight repair, removal of encroachments, and other preventive measures.
