Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed among 6 PTI-backed senators elected from KP

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured six out of 11 Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as voting in Senate elections concluded on Monday amid intense political negotiations and a seat-sharing arrangement between the ruling party and the opposition, Aaj News reported. According to unconfirmed and unofficial results, PTI-backed candidates won four of the seven general seats, while the opposition clinched the remaining three. PTI's Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Allama Noorul Haq Qadri, and Mirza Afridi emerged victorious on the general seats, while the opposition saw wins for PML-N's Niaz Amir Muqam, JUI-F's Maulana Attaul Haq Dervesh, and PPP's Talha Mehmood. On women's reserved seats, PTI's Rubina Naz secured 89 votes to defeat PPP's Rubina Khalid, who received 52 votes. Among technocrat seats, PTI's Azam Swati bagged 89 votes, while JUI-F's Dilawar Khan secured 54. Polling began at 11am in the KP Assembly and was extended until 5:30pm to accommodate all voters. All 145 members cast their votes, including Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who was the last to vote. The election saw a total of 22 candidates vying for 11 seats; seven general, two technocrat, and two reserved for women. Despite efforts by the PTI leadership to unite its ranks, internal rifts persisted. While some disgruntled candidates stepped down following negotiations, Khurram Zeeshan remained in the race. The voting took place at the KP Assembly's Jirga Hall, which was declared the official polling station by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), with two booths set up for the process.

Senate race heats up as K-P battle begins

The race for 11 vacant Senate seats from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has officially begun, with the Election Commission of Pakistan announcing the polling schedule following the notification of reserved seats in the provincial assembly. The polling is set to take place on July 21 inside the K-P Assembly. The vacant positions include seven general seats, two technocrat seats, and two reserved for women, drawing a mix of seasoned politicians and new contenders. High-profile figures such as former federal minister Azam Khan Swati, Murad Saeed—a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader currently in hiding—Rubina Khalid, Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme, and the son of Federal Minister Amir Muqam are among those who have submitted nomination papers. A total of 16 candidates are vying for the seven general seats, with PTI-backed candidates contesting as independents due to the party's ongoing legal and political challenges. The general seat hopefuls include Asif Rafiq, Azhar Mashwani, Khurram Zeeshan, Dilawar Khan, Shafqat Ayaz, Irfan Saleem, Faisal Javed, Faizur Rehman, Muhammad Azam Swati, Muhammad Waqas Arakzai, Murad Saeed, Mirza Muhammad Afridi, and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri—all running independently. Party-nominated candidates include Niaz Ahmad from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muhammad Talha Mehmood from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Attaul Haq Darwesh representing Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F). Meanwhile, competition for the two women's reserved seats has also intensified, with four candidates in the fray. Rubina Khalid has been nominated by the PPP, while Rubina Naz, Ayesha Bano, and Mehwish Ali Khan are running as independents. The contest for the two technocrat seats is equally competitive, with six candidates in the field. Among them are independent candidates Khalid Masood, Syed Irshad Hussain, Azam Swati, Noorul Haq Qadri, and Waqar Ahmad Qazi. JUI-F has fielded Dilawar Khan as its sole candidate for this category. Based on the current numerical strength of parties in the provincial assembly, analysts expect the ruling coalition to secure seven of the eleven seats—including five general, one women's, and one technocrat seat. The opposition is projected to win four seats, likely divided into two general, one women's, and one technocrat seat. However, the final outcome remains uncertain as negotiations and behind-the-scenes maneuvering continue among opposition parties, each aiming to increase their share of representation in the upper house. The run-up to the July 21 Senate elections is expected to remain tense, with shifting alliances and unexpected withdrawals potentially altering the final lineup. Currently, the opposition holds a significant presence in the provincial assembly, with JUI-F occupying 19 seats, PML-N 16, PPP 11, ANP three, and PTI Parliamentarians also holding three seats. Following the recent implementation of decisions regarding reserved seats, the strength of the opposition bloc in the assembly has risen to 52 members.

Judicial Complex Attack: Murad Saeed, two other PTI leaders declared absconders

Listen to article An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad has declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Murad Saeed, Hammad Azhar, and Farrukh Habib as absconders in cases related to the Judicial Complex attack due to their repeated absence from numerous court hearings. ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra presided over the hearing against the PTI leaders. The court also issued arrest warrants for Wasiq Qayyum Abbasi, Raja Basharat, and several other absentees in the case. Following the attendance of the available accused, the court adjourned further hearings on both cases until April 7. The PTI leaders are facing two cases registered at Ramna Police Station related to the incident. The case stemmed from an incident that occurred during PTI Chairman Imran Khan's appearance at the Judicial Complex in Islamabad, where he sought bail in multiple cases. A large number of PTI supporters gathered at the site, removed security barriers, damaged the complex's entry gate, and disrupted court proceedings. Following the event, the Islamabad Police registered a terrorism case against those involved, invoking Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), along with Section 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which pertains to obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duties. Authorities claimed the attack had been premeditated, with some political figures allegedly inciting the mob. Several individuals were arrested, with law enforcement recovering a Kalashnikov and other weapons from those detained. Raids were conducted across different provinces to apprehend additional suspects. Authorities stated that government property had been vandalized during the attack but credited police forces for successfully preventing the situation from escalating further at the Islamabad High Court.
