TYT concerned over radical attitudes and intolerance
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 Text Size: Musa stressed that the Ma'al Hijrah celebration should serve as a platform for reflection and a starting point towards a more holistic future, with Islamic values and principles as the foundation for comprehensive development. Kota Kinabalu: The development of a progressive and dynamic Madani Ummah (civil society) cannot rely solely on leadership but requires the commitment and responsibility of the entire community. Head of State Tun (Dr) Musa Aman stressed that the Ma'al Hijrah celebration should serve as a platform for reflection and a starting point towards a more holistic future, with Islamic values and principles as the foundation for comprehensive development. 'Muslims must embrace the spirit of Hijrah as a catalyst for transforming our mindset, work culture and life direction. 'Being progressive means advancing in knowledge, economics, technology and thought. 'Being dynamic requires us to be agile in facing the challenges of the times and adaptable to global changes. 'However, true progress cannot be achieved by merely imitating other civilisations. It must be built upon the Islamic spirit in all fields – education, leadership, economics and human development,' he said at the State-level Ma'al Hijrah 1447H celebration, Friday. Musa, who was accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, said change must begin from within before it can be extended to the family, community and nation, in order to raise a tech-savvy generation with strong morals and character. He also highlighted that one of the major challenges in building a Madani society is the presence of radical attitudes, intolerance and moral decline among the younger generation. 'Character education must be strengthened, religious outreach (dakwah) must be delivered with wisdom and the misuse of social media must be controlled to prevent it from becoming a tool for spreading hatred,' he added. Musa further emphasised that religious institutions, educational bodies and the mass media play a vital role in shaping the collective awareness of the Muslim community. 'Building a Madani Ummah that upholds values of justice, tolerance and mutual respect is a shared responsibility that must be shouldered by all, regardless of status,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Struggle requires sacrifice: Chief Minister
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 Text Size: Musa (third left), presenting the Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M Male Figure Award to Datuk Amir Kahar Mustapha as Hajiji looks on. Kota Kinabalu: Muslims are urged to embrace the spirit of Hijrah (migration) as a foundation for strengthening unity and determination in facing increasingly complex new challenges in today's demanding world, particularly in the face of global instability and international geopolitical turmoil. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the crises engulfing several regions in the Middle East – including Gaza, Iran, Lebanon and Syria – are not merely regional issues but have significant implications on global political stability and the wellbeing of the entire ummah. 'Ongoing wars and the Zionist Israeli military attacks on Islamic territories not only violate international law but also blatantly infringe upon fundamental human rights. 'This is no minor issue. It has the potential to reshape history and global geopolitics,' he said at the State-level Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M Celebration Assembly held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Friday. Hajiji stressed that Muslims cannot afford to remain passive in the face of new challenges such as Islamophobia, ongoing humanitarian crises and the worsening global economic pressure driven by the Western-dominated 'New World Order' agenda. 'We are facing challenges to the very civilisation of the ummah which demand unity, unwavering faith, inner strength and collective commitment. We cannot afford to be weak, divided or merely stand by as spectators,' he said. He said the spirit of Hijrah exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad SAW must serve as a guide in building a Madani society – one rooted in faith, knowledge, ethics, justice and humanity. He said the development of a Madani Ummah cannot succeed without a shift in mindset and a willingness to undergo a value-based transformation – from weakness to strength, from backwardness to progress and from division to unity. 'Hijrah is a struggle. And every struggle requires sacrifice – whether in attitude, time, energy, finances or principles. This is the spirit that must be embraced as we embark on the new Hijrah year of 1447,' he said. Hajiji also called on the people to embrace Hijrah through the pursuit of knowledge and technology, cultivating a culture of innovation, strengthening unity and enhancing charitable deeds for the collective welfare of the ummah. He urged the people to strengthen their resolve and intentions for the new Hijrah year by adopting change as a cultural foundation for personal, family, community and State success. 'The Maal Hijrah celebration is not merely about commemorating history but must serve as a catalyst for transformation and renewal towards excellence. Let us all embody the spirit of Hijrah and work together to develop the ummah in an inclusive and holistic way,' he said. Veteran politician Datuk Datu Amir Kahar Datu Mustapha who was active from 1986 to 2008 and once served as Deputy Chief Minister as well as State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister was selected as the male Maal Hijrah Figure. He received RM20,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate. For the female Maal Hijrah Figure, the award went to Datuk Seri Norsuadah Basah, a former newsreader, announcer, and producer active from 1973 to 1978. She also received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman explained that progressive means a community that is always moving forward in the fields of knowledge, economy, technology, thought and humanity, while dynamic means a community that is agile in facing the challenges of the times. Musa said it should be remembered that, in an effort to move forward, Muslims cannot abandon the Islamic values and principles inherited from the Prophet Muhammad, and they must plan and build a more perfect future and not imitate other civilizations. He also emphasized that the main challenge in developing a civilized community is the presence of radical, intolerant attitudes and a moral crisis among the younger generation. 'Religious institutions, education and the mass media have a great responsibility to jointly create collective awareness about the importance of developing a civilized community according to acceptable standards. 'This responsibility also needs to be fulfilled by each individual by becoming an agent of change and showing a fair, tolerant and respectful attitude towards fellow human beings in life,' he said. Musa said this when officiating the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor urged Muslims to make the spirit of hijrah the basis for strengthening unity and determination to face new and increasingly complex challenges in today's challenging world. 'The ongoing war and the Israeli Zionist army's attacks on Islamic territories not only violate international law, but also blatantly violate human rights. This is not a small issue. It can change history and world geopolitics,' he said. ETS from Gemas to JB to spur tourism
JOHOR BARU: The extension of KTM Bhd's ETS services from Gemas to Johor Baru will improve connectivity to further stimulate the country's tourism industry, say tourism officials. Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof said the time savings offered by this service, expected to take passengers from KL Sentral to JB Sentral in four hours, augurs well for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). 'The ETS will connect Johor Baru straight to Kuala Lumpur and this will definitely help strengthen the industry, especially in terms of tourist movement, allowing them to visit more places. 'If they stay the night for cultural events such as this, it will also help increase hotel occupancy rates here,' he said. Musa added that the spillover effects from the ETS, which reached Segamat in March, could already be seen. 'We can already see Segamat benefiting from this, especially during the durian season,' he said after officiating a Gawai and Kaamatan Festival celebration at a hotel here. On another matter, Musa said that Tourism Malaysia has also been working closely with industry players, including hotels, to promote VM2026. 'We have been having engagement sessions with industry players from north to south to ensure that we are fully prepared for VM2026. 'Among issues that were brought up was the need for stronger collaboration to promote our initiatives, and we've been encouraging industry players to leverage digital media to reach a wider audience,' he said, adding that this preparation involves making sure that tour guides and hotels are fully equipped and ready to provide top-notch services for visitors. Meanwhile, Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo said the ETS will significantly improve connectivity and give a much-needed boost to tourism. 'One of the most positive developments is the train, which is not just beneficial for domestic travellers, but also for foreign tourists,' he said. Teo added that the improved logistics will make Johor Baru more attractive not only as a destination but also as a gateway to other towns like Segamat and Kluang. 'Logistics is the foundation of tourism. Without good accessibility, it's hard to attract tourists. 'With this, we'll see more people coming, especially during the year-end school holidays,' he added. It is understood that the Phase 2 of the extension of the southern ETS will be from Segamat to Kluang, while Phase 3 will see the train going past Kluang to Johor Baru. However, to date, KTMB has not released any ETS schedule to Johor Baru, the expected journey time from Segamat to Johor Baru, or the expected opening date for the service. In its latest release of advance ticket sales of up to November, no ETS tickets were offered for journeys beyond Segamat.
