Judge Musyiri Peet delivered the sentence after both accused — Heriadi, 39, and Keti, 36 — pleaded guilty to the charge. The court also ordered them to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their prison terms. They were arrested at about 9.50pm on June 23 by the roadside along Jalan Teku-Pasai Siong, after failing to produce valid travel documents. They were charged under Section 6(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amendment 2002) and punished under Section 6(3), which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000, up to five years' jail, or both, and up to six strokes of the cane. Investigations confirmed the couple had no records of legal entry into Malaysia. It is understood that the arrest was made while police were investigating a separate murder case involving another Indonesian national at a farm hut in Jalan Rantau Panjang. In relation to that case, Heriadi was separately charged with murder at the Magistrates' Court here on July 8. He was accused of killing a fellow countryman, identified as Andi, at around 7pm on June 22. No plea was recorded, as the case will be heard at the High Court. The entrance of the Sibu Court Complex. SIBU (May 19): A 45-year-old lodging establishment operator was fined RM50,000, in default five months' imprisonment, by the Sessions Court here today for stealing electricity supplied by Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco) six years ago. Judge Musyiri Peet meted out the sentence after Ting Siew King from Jalan Salim pleaded guilty to an amended charge under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance (Cap. 50). The offence, committed on Aug 8, 2019, between 9.40am and 1.40pm, took place at a lodging premises located at Lorong Seduan 2 here. According to the facts of the case, several teams from Sesco Revenue Management Division raided the premises on Aug 8, 2020 at about 9am. They detected direct tapping wires on nine electricity meters and found that electrical appliances on the premises were operational, despite digital clamp readings on the cables showing zero consumption. Ting, who is the registered proprietor and business owner of the establishment, is also the registered customer and account holder to the contract of Supply of Electricity with Sesco. He was found to have dishonestly prevented the meter from accurately recording the consumption of electricity supplied. In mitigation, his defence counsel Jacob Wong and Jessie Wong said Ting's guilty plea had saved the court and prosecution's time and cost. They added that it was his first offence, and he had shown remorse and pledged not to repeat the wrongdoing. The court was also told that Ting had fully settled RM95,812.56 in arrears with Sesco in 2023. In passing down the sentence, the judge considered Ting's guilty plea and noted that the offence was committed in 2019, before the amendment of the Electricity Ordinance in 2023, which was only enforced in 2024. Before the amendment, Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance (Cap.50) provides a fine of RM100,000 or five years imprisonment or both, upon conviction. After the amendment, the Section provides a fine not exceeding RM200,000 or five years imprisonment or both.
