Govt may make compulsory MyDigital ID registration
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is considering legislation to encourage, or make compulsory, MyDigital ID registration among Malaysians, the Dewan Rakyat heard yesterday. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the voluntary nature of registration had hindered uptake. "Encouraging wider adoption has been challenging due to its voluntary registration nature. This requires discussion, particularly on strategies to boost participation. "The government is exploring the option of introducing legislation that could promote or require Malaysians to register for MyDigital ID," she said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran). Kiandee said the recent autogate system glitch had sparked public concerns about the broader digital initiative, particularly on data privacy and security, the role of implementing agencies, digital accessibility and potential misuse. He also noted MyDigital ID's low adoption rate compared to platforms like Padu and Budi Madani. Dr Zaliha said the autogate incident had understandably raised worries among the public. "However, security measures are being strengthened for MyDigital ID, which ensures that security protocols are strictly maintained, data is not stored, and overall safety is prioritised." She said the government was working closely with various entities, including the private sector, to boost the adoption and utilisation of MyDigital ID across various services. Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha said registrations rose to 2.8 million as of the second quarter of this year, an increase from 1.8 million in the first quarter. "The number is expected to continue rising with the expansion of 'use case', referring to applications or services where MyDigital ID is used." She said this included logging into the MyGOV portal, the MyJPJ app and verification for prepaid SIM card owners. "This is because each new use case creates a demand for digital identity verification, thereby driving up registration among the public." Integrations have expanded to 35 government systems, with another 17 in the implementation stage and 21 in early discussions. "Seven non-government application systems have been integrated, with two more in the process, totalling 82 systems, nearly double March's figure." MyDigital ID will also extend to digital applications in the financial and banking sectors.

Screengrab from the video showing the JPJ vehicle overtaking a trailer lorry on a double line in Simpang Pulai, Perak. PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has taken immediate action against one of its officers after a viral video showed a department vehicle being driven recklessly in Simpang Pulai, Perak. JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the officer has been issued a summons for overtaking on a double line, and suspended from driving the department's vehicles. 'The officer has also been temporarily removed from active duty and reassigned to a non-operational role at the JPJ headquarters while a full investigation is carried out,' he said in a statement. Aedy said the department views the matter seriously and has launched further investigations to determine if the officer has committed other offences. 'JPJ will not compromise on traffic violations, even if it involves our own personnel. We will take firm action against any officer or road user found breaking the law,' he said. The 12-second video shows the JPJ vehicle overtaking on a double line, causing other motorists to honk to warn oncoming vehicles. The department thanked the public for recording the video and urged more people to come forward with reports of traffic offences. 'Complaints may be made in real-time using the MyJPJ app or emailed to [email protected] with complete details,' it said.

Reckless driving in govt car lands RTD staff on desk duty and slapped with traffic summons
PETALING JAYA: A Road Transport Department (RTD) personnel has landed in hot water after being caught on video overtaking on a double line — in a government vehicle. The clip, filmed today (July 9) in Simpang Pulai, Perak, quickly went viral across social media platforms, drawing public fury over the officer's blatant disregard for traffic laws. The department wasted no time responding. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said in a statement the staff has been slapped with a traffic summons, banned from driving any department vehicles, and pulled from active duty. 'He's now been reassigned to desk duties at the RTD headquarters while a full investigation is underway. 'There's no excuse for this. RTD takes a zero-tolerance stance on road offences — even when it's one of our own,' said Aedy Fadly. He added that further checks are being conducted to see if the personnel had committed other violations. The department commended the public for sounding the alarm and urged more Malaysians to report bad road behaviour in real time using the MyJPJ app or by emailing aduantrafik@

Harris (left) explaining seatbelt usage to a bus passenger. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (July 4): The use of seatbelts by drivers and passengers of express and tour buses is now mandatory as a measure to reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities in road accidents. Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Datuk Mohd Harris Ali stated that the enforcement of this seatbelt rule began on July 1 as a crucial step to ensure passenger safety throughout their journey. 'Bus operators and drivers play a key role by ensuring all passengers wear seatbelts before the journey begins. This measure is vital in reducing serious injuries and deaths in case of accidents, as well as preventing passengers from being ejected upon impact,' he said during the Express and Tour Bus Seatbelt Operation at KK Sentral Bus Terminal today. He added that enforcement operations are actively being carried out at bus terminals, rest stops, and highways across Malaysia, including undercover checks on buses. Passengers can also lodge complaints if seatbelts are found to be faulty. Failure to comply will result in a RM300 fine for drivers, passengers and operators. Continuous public awareness campaigns will also be conducted by JPJ to educate the public on the importance of seatbelt usage. Harris emphasized that Sabah JPJ is committed to ensuring road safety and reducing accident-related fatalities. To strengthen enforcement, 286 officers have been deployed. According to Sabah's road accident statistics from 2020 to May 2025, there were 1,315 fatal accidents out of 93,189 total cases, highlighting the urgent need for stricter safety compliance. The public is encouraged to use the MyJPJ app and SISPAA for reporting violations, enabling JPJ to take swift action against offenders.
