Global Switch 2 shortage may continue into next year

TOKYO, Japan, July 5: The Nintendo Switch 2, which launched globally on June 5, is expected to remain in short supply through next spring, according to industry analysts, as demand continues to outpace production capacity despite record-breaking sales. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the ongoing shortage during the company's 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders this week, stating that demand for the new-generation console has 'exceeded supply in many countries,' with Japan among the hardest hit. 'We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing our consumers,' Furukawa said. 'I understand that some of our shareholders and their families and friends might still be unable to purchase Nintendo Switch 2.' The Switch 2 has enjoyed a historic launch, selling more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, according to VGChartz estimates — more than double the original Nintendo Switch's 1.4 million units during its launch week in 2017. This makes it the biggest global hardware launch in video game history. However, the success has led to significant stock issues. In Japan, Nintendo introduced a lottery-based sales system through its My Nintendo Store as early as April. Furukawa disclosed that the company received over 2.2 million applications for purchase — a number that far surpassed initial forecasts. 'Since then, we have conducted a total of four lottery rounds, but many consumers have still not been selected,' Furukawa added. 'A fifth round is scheduled to take place in early July.' Retailers across Japan have also adopted similar lottery systems to cope with high demand, although recent reports indicate that more storefronts have started offering direct in-store purchases. Nintendo says it is working to scale up production to meet global demand. Despite improved availability in markets like the United States and United Kingdom — Nintendo's largest revenue regions — analysts predict that full supply stabilization may not occur until spring 2026, particularly in Japan and other parts of Asia. According to Statista data, Nintendo prioritized supply to the U.S. and Europe due to their sales potential, with Japan ranking third in terms of company revenue. This decision has fueled frustrations among domestic consumers, who face the steepest wait times and most competitive purchasing systems. While the company ramps up manufacturing, Nintendo is also facing minor post-launch issues such as packaging damage caused by retail mishandling — including screens punctured by receipts stapled to the console box. However, no widespread product defects have been reported. With analysts forecasting sustained demand through the holiday season, consumers are advised to monitor official Nintendo channels and trusted retailers for updates on availability and upcoming lottery rounds. In the meantime, Nintendo maintains its commitment to improving access: 'We will continue to strengthen our production and supply systems to deliver as many Nintendo Switch 2 systems as possible to our customers,' Furukawa affirmed.

Nintendo president apologizes for Switch 2 shortage — says demand greatly exceeded expectations

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has issued an apology during the company's 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, acknowledging that initial demand for the Switch 2 'greatly exceeded expectations.' The long-awaited console arrived on store shelves early in June, smashing the original Nintendo Switch's sales record by almost a million copies. Although it seems that the U.S. and the U.K. did not face any supply issues during the launch, other markets — most notably Japan — aren't as lucky. According to Nintendo Life, one shareholder even asked Furukawa about the reason for the shortage because of how severe the problem seemed to be. 'Currently, demand for the Switch 2 is outpacing supply in many countries, and we're unable to fully meet it. We understand that even some of our shareholders have not been able to obtain one. Starting in April, we accepted lottery-based purchases through the My Nintendo Store. The number of applicants greatly exceeded our expectations, with 2.2 million entries — a figure I publicly announced in my name along with an apology,' Furukawa said during the meeting [machine translated]. 'Since then, we've held four rounds of lottery sales, but there are still many who weren't selected. We've announced a fifth round starting in July. Many major retail stores have also resorted to lottery-based sales,' he added. 'Gradually, more locations are beginning to offer direct in-store sales as well. As a company, we are working to strengthen our production system so we can deliver as many units as possible to our customers. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the initial demand far exceeding our forecasts.' The company apparently prioritized the U.S. and Europe, which are its largest markets. According to Statista, Japan only ranks third in the company's global revenue, so it makes sense for Nintendo to stock up in countries where it will make the most sales. But even though gamers in those areas can easily buy a Switch 2, they did not escape from a few hiccups, including a few units that showed signs of tampering and staples puncturing screens after store employees staple the receipt to the box. Despite those issues, the Switch 2 is one of the more successful global launches in recent history. While some regions did not escape shortages, this is unlike the arrival of Nvidia's RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs and the PlayStation 5, which all suffered from a lack of supply, leading to artificially increased prices and the proliferation of scalpers. So, if you're in the U.S. and the U.K., you don't have to worry about getting stiffed when buying the latest Nintendo gaming console — you can easily get one as long as you know where to buy the Switch 2. Nintendo's GameCube controller for the Switch 2 is available once again

If you missed the chance to pick up Nintendo's new GameCube Controller for the Switch 2, your time has come. It's back in stock for $64.99 at the My Nintendo Store. To add one to your collection, you'll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which starts at $19.99 a year for individuals. Once signed up, you can place an order by signing into your Nintendo Account and adding the gamepad to your cart, though you're still limited to one controller per account. Nintendo's new Switch 2 gamepad updates the classic GameCube Controller with a wireless design, a GameChat button, and USB-C. However, it only works with GameCube titles available through the Switch Online Expansion Pack. As fun as it's been playing Mario Kart World and the updated versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch 2, I've been enjoying catching up on GameCube titles available through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. The controller provides a genuine experience when playing classic titles like Wind Waker and Soulcalibur II, with some notable upgrades. The biggest change is the addition of wireless connectivity, so you're not tethered by a short cable. It also has Nintendo's 'C' button for opening up GameChat, a new Discord-like voice chat feature that's free until March 31st, 2026. And if you like taking screenshots, the controller has a dedicated capture button, allowing you to document your first-place finishes in Mario Kart World. Although it works best with GameCube titles, you can also use the controller to play Switch 2 games, complete with gyro controls. However, Nintendo warns that the GameCube Controller 'doesn't have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system,' which means you may run into some issues when playing games on the new system. Nintendo Switch 2 UK stock live: Where to buy a console today

It's now been over a week since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, and stock is still vanishing fast. Amazon briefly restocked this morning, but it sold out in under five minutes. But it's not all doom and gloom, the console is now in stock at the My Nintendo Store. EE is still offering the console to existing customers, while ShopTo has it available on back order, with delivery expected from 18 June at the earliest. Elsewhere, Argos, JD Williams, Smyths Toys and Very all restocked last week, but sold out within minutes. I'm updating this page with the latest stock updates as well as the latest Nintendo Switch 2 news, so keep checking back. This is the only Nintendo Switch 2 stock checker you need. Where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 right now Nintendo Switch 2 specs The Switch 2 might look familiar, but there's a lot going on underneath. It's powered by a new custom Nvidia chip, so games don't just load faster, they look better and run more smoothly. You get 12GB of RAM (up from 4GB on the original Switch), and most of that goes straight into powering games, not just background stuff. The screen is still LCD, not OLED, but it's bigger at 7.9in and has 1080p resolution. It supports HDR and a 120Hz refresh rate. Colours pop more, and motion looks buttery-smooth in handheld mode. There's also DLSS upscaling built in, so older games look better. Sadly, while it supports variable refresh rates, it doesn't work when docked – just in handheld mode. Nintendo Switch 2 price The Nintendo Switch 2 on its own costs £399.99, and the main bundle with Mario Kart World costs £429.99. Buying the bundle saves you £40 compared to picking up the game separately, so it's better value if you're planning to grab it anyway. No big discounts yet – it's only been out a week, after all – but some retailers have larger, more expensive bundles. These include the new Switch 2 camera (£49, the Pro controller (£74.99, and the official carry case and screen protector (£20.99, as well as extra games and accessories. Nintendo Switch 2 launch games There are plenty of new Nintendo Switch 2 games at launch. Mario Kart World is the big one, but you've also got upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, plus mammoth games like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition and Hogwarts Legacy – two games that really test the console's muscle. Other launch day games include Hades 2, Split Fiction, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Street Fighter 6, Survival Kids and Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. You've also got Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and Deltarune Chapters 1–4, plus more niche picks like Fantasy Life i and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD. Civilization VII and No Man's Sky are here too, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour acts as a mini showcase for the new hardware. On top of that, loads of older Nintendo titles have been patched with free performance updates, and Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur II are now available through the new Switch Online GameCube library. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller is a big step up from the original, but it has been selling out as quickly as the console itself. It finally has two re-mappable triggers on the back, there's a built-in a headphone jack for a wired headset, and there's a C button for GameChat. Right now, the only place where you can buy one is at Amazon. When you finally get your Nintendo Switch 2, you'll notice that you won't be able to slot your current microSD cards in and play your existing games. While you can transfer them over from your OG Switch to the new one, you'll need a microSSD Express card – not the regular one. The official one from Nintendo and SanDisk gives you an extra 256GB of storage and costs £49.99.
