‘Barbarism and brutality': Burnt body found in Mahikeng field sparks vigilante killing fears
Police discovered the burnt body on Wednesday afternoon and believe it was an act of vigilantism. North West police have launched an investigation into the death of an unidentified female after they discovered her burnt body in an open field near Mmabatho in Mahikeng on Wednesday. The body, found along Vryhof Road at around 4.30pm, had pieces of burnt tyres around the neck and waist. Police believe she was killed in what looks like an act of vigilantism. A call for tip-offs and more info 'Investigation into the matter continues and the police request anyone with information that can assist in resolving this mystery to contact the investigating officers, Captain Ompolokile Letebele, on 082 416 3749 or Sergeant Pitso Kgetsana, on 079 897 1858,' police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said in a statement. 'The South African Police Service Crime Stop can be called on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can be communicated via the MySAPS app. Information received will be treated with strictest confidentiality.' 'Barbarism and brutality' The North West acting provincial commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, warned that police will not tolerate acts of vigilantism as they could make way for anarchy and lawlessness to replace law, order and peaceful co-existence amongst the community. 'Extra judicial killings, regardless of the complaints or allegations of wrongful conduct, threaten the authority of the state and the credibility of the entire criminal justice system to maintain public order and to enforce the law,' Asenang said. Three bodies found in the Western Cape The discovery comes just a few hours after Western Cape police found the bodies of three men, aged between 26 and 35, in another apparent vigilante-style attack in the Samora Machel informal settlement. Police discovered the bodies in different locations in close proximity to each other at around 8am on Wednesday. 'Preliminary information indicates that the victims were allegedly accused by community members of being armed robbers and were subsequently targeted and killed in what appears to be a vigilante-style attack,' said police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut. 'Although post-mortem examinations will confirm the exact cause of death, it is suspected that the victims were fatally assaulted.' Missing: Help police find two Mamelodi residents
Police have asked people to help them locate two unrelated missing persons from Mamelodi. They are Phillemon Duke Mahlangu (63) from Mamelodi East and Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik informal settlement. Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said the two went missing on different dates. Mahlangu was last seen on January 14. He was wearing a brown hat and brown jacket in the last picture he was taken. Khulong said Mahlangu's son reported him missing, saying he was with his father in the Pretoria CBD the same day he went missing, as they had not seen each other in a long time. 'After picking him up, they travelled to Mamelodi East and spent the day together. When they parted ways, the victim requested the complainant to drop him off at Tshwane College. That was the last time he saw him,' said Khulong. The son said they continued speaking on the phone until February, when Mahlangu's phone began going to voicemail. He has made attempts to look for his father, but he has not been found ever since. Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik in Mamelodi East was last seen on June 3. His mother reported him missing. According to the information received from her, she received a call from her neighbour on June 7, indicating that she had not seen Phasha in three days. Khulong said the mother claimed she left her home on May 19 and had left the victim at their place of residence. Upon her return, she enquired with one of the neighbours if they had not seen Phasha. The neighbour informed her that she last saw him at the railway line, and that he did not seem to be in good health. Phasha was last seen wearing a black jersey, black trousers and black sandals, carrying a black laptop bag. Anyone who has information about any of the two missing persons can contact Mamelodi East police on 012 815 7000, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information through the MySAPS App. 'There is no waiting period to report a missing person,' Khulong said. Woman still missing 4 months on, search continues
The search for Bongi Phahlamohlaka, who has been missing for about four months, is still continuing. The 26-year-old from Bridgeview informal settlement, Nellmapius, was last seen on February 28. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mcunu said the investigations were still ongoing, but police required the community's help in locating the woman. Mcunu said she was reported missing by her sister, Phumzile, on March 1. Phumzile said she last saw Bongi returning from a visit with her mother, wearing a long brown dress, a black T-shirt and a sky-blue blazer. She said they called her on her cellphone to check if she arrived home safely, but it was off. Phumzile said at the time she didn't think much of it because Bongi lives in an area prone to power outages. She said she had assumed her cellphone battery had died and she couldn't charge it. 'We were hoping to see her on Sunday when she comes to church, but she never arrived. 'We went to her place to search for her and asked neighbours about her whereabouts, but they last saw her on February 28,' said Phumzile. She said with the help of neighbours, they forced the door open, but Bongi was nowhere to be found, and everything looked fine inside. Mcunu said police have already started investigating leads. The family said they searched almost everywhere for her without luck. Anyone with information can contact the Silverton police on 012 845 4000 or report via the MySAPS App, on 08600 10111 or call Phumzile on 060 717 0602. There is no waiting period to report a missing person. Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to bennittb@ or phone us on 083 625 4114.
