Browns' Myles Garrett 'Trending Toward Best Season' in 2025
Browns' Myles Garrett 'Trending Toward Best Season' in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett started the offseason by demanding a trade. Now, just a couple of months after signing a contract extension that made him the highest-paid (at the time) non-quarterback in the NFL, he's ready to have the best year of his eight-year career. Advertisement And that would be an accomplishment. Someone who knows something about how dominant Garrett can be, former NFL offensive lineman Terron Armstead, believes the former Texas A&M Aggies defender might be entering his prime in Year 9. 'He's a problem. He has 0.5% body fat, so you're looking at this guy before he gets in his stance — it doesn't make sense. His ability to have so much power, to be that size, but can rush being just inches off the ground,' Armstead said during an appearance on Good Morning Football. 'He's added more elements to his game. Now you see the progression he's made going into 2025. He's going to touch 20 sacks.' Now that he's locked in with a new contract and all the offseason distractions are gone, Garrett says he can focus on next season - and the future. Advertisement 'I mean, I look forward to having my best season for sure, and I think it's trending that way. Been really good, and I think everything's pointed in that direction,' Garrett said during minicamp. 'And I like where we are as a defensive unit. It's really firing, really rolling, and I think it's really clicking as far as the scheme and the plays, especially early on. That's big.' ‘I Haven't Heard That' Says NFL Insider of Steelers' T.J. Watt Rumor
'I Haven't Heard That' Says NFL Insider of Steelers' T.J. Watt Rumor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Most of us can agree that somehow, some way, the Pittsburgh Steelers will soon make edge rusher T.J. Watt one of the highest-paid defenders in the NFL - again. Advertisement How much will Watt get? What about years and guarantees? What about where he will end up ranking amid the highest-paid guys in the game... and in the history of the game? Thats where we don't all agree. Bleacher Report's James Palmer is reporting that the Watt number could be at the very all-time top, up and over the Cleveland Browns' recent deal with Myles Garrett. Color us skeptical... but let's hear out Palmer... 'I'm hearing there's a chance Watt gets past $40 (million APY), which is something we're really keeping an eye on, right? That if he gets that $40 million per year at the age that he is at. ' Palmer said on his NFL Insider Notebook. 'He has every right to ask for it. I've talked on here a lot about the comparisons between him and Myles Garrett. The numbers are almost identical in every aspect in terms of superlatives and in terms of numbers, and they came in the same draft class. Advertisement 'He has the right to try to get that. We'll see.' Whoa. Our response? With all due respect to the plugged-in Palmer, this take sounds like it comes from someone who just got off the phone with T.J. and his agent. It kinda comes out of the blue. Watt is presently entering the final season of his $112 million extension signed just ahead of the 2021 NFL year. At the time, the deal made Watt the highest-paid NFL defender. On that extension, the edge rusher has received an average annual salary of $28 million. But other defenders have blown past that historic deal over the past four years. Garrett signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Browns this offseason. Advertisement Meshing with our take is 'Rap Sheet's' similar response to Palmer's report. During his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was asked about the $40 million rumor. 'I still believe it's gonna work out. But I hadn't heard that number,' Rapoport said. 'And I hadn't heard that anything is imminent.' Rapoport is being polite here. 'I hadn't heard that number' is a nice way of saying… 'That's not the number.' So we will stick with 'out of the blue' view while hoping that Watt and the Steelers forge a deal in time for training camp. Related: Bills Trade For T.J. Steelers don't want to trade T.J. Watt despite other teams' interest, per reports
Teams are free to call the Pittsburgh Steelers to ask if T.J. Watt is available. They just shouldn't expect them to pick up. ESPN reported Monday that "multiple teams have been discussing whether they can trade for Steelers' standout T.J. Watt" after the star edge rusher sat out of the Steelers' mandatory minicamp. However, both ESPN and NFL Network went on to report that the Steelers are committed to keeping Watt in the Steel City. Advertisement Watt, 30, is entering the final year of the four-year, $112 million contract extension he signed in 2021. His refusal to attend minicamp earlier this month is reportedly related to his desire to secure a renewed extension before the 2025 season begins. STEELERS NEWS: Dolphins deal Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh in blockbuster move In addition to Watt's current contract expiring after 2025, there's the added context that two other star edge rushers – the Raiders' Maxx Crosby and Browns' Myles Garrett – signed massive extensions earlier this offseason. As of Monday, Watt has not reached a new deal to stay with the Steelers past the 2025 season. Advertisement Pittsburgh's blockbuster trade to acquire cornerback Jalen Ramsey – who's under contract through 2028 – and tight end Jonnu Smith – whom the Steelers extended through 2026 – on Monday fanned the flames of trade speculation for Watt. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that "outside team interest [to trade for Watt] is likely to increase given (Monday)'s trade." However, he went on to post on the social media website X that the "Steelers have been adamant they want T.J. Watt to finish his career in Pittsburgh." NFL Network's Tom Pelissero corroborated the follow-up report, writing, "The Steelers have no intention of trading star pass rusher T.J. Watt and their focus remains on extending Watt's contract." In 2024, Watt played all 17 regular-season games for a second straight season after sustaining a knee injury in Week 18 of the 2023 season. He recorded 61 tackles, 11.5 sacks and four pass deflections, and his six forced fumbles led the league. Watt earned a seventh consecutive Pro Bowl nod as well and finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Advertisement Barring a new contract, Watt is set to make $21.05 million in 2025. Teams reportedly expect Steelers to listen to T.J. Watt offers after Ramsey deal
June 30 - Is Steelers All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt available to trade suitors? That's the question multiple teams in the NFL are asking Monday, according to ESPN, after Pittsburgh pulled off a trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Watt, 30, has 108 career sacks as he enters the final year of a four-year, $112 million contract he signed in 2021. That contract averages $28 million per year, far less than the going rate for premium pass rushers. Division rival Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns reset the market in March with a $123.5 million guarantee on a contract he signed following a trade demand. His annual average salary of $40 million is the highest in the NFL for non-quarterbacks. When Watt skipped mandatory minicamp this month and voluntary offseason team activities in the spring, he did not indicate whether he wants to hit the top of the market or surpass Garrett's compensation package. The Steelers are not expected to shop Watt. But ESPN reported teams are more likely to check in with Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan following the acquisition of Ramsey because the Steelers picked up $19.6 million of his $26.6 million salary for 2025. Watt is a four-time All-Pro and has spent his eight-year career with the Steelers since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2017. He has six seasons with at least 11.5 sacks -- his total last season -- and has forced 33 fumbles in his career. That's the most in the NFL over the last eight years, eight more than the Los Angeles Chargers' Khalil Mack. Garrett shares third with 20. --Field Level Media

The curious reason why insiders think T.J. Watt will become the highest-paid defender in the NFL
As per reports, multiple teams are interested in trade for Steelers' T.J. Watt. Source: X In December last year, Steelers star T.J. Watt suffered an ankle injury late as Pittsburgh lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. Watt sustained the injury in the fourth quarter when he was rushing around the edge against Eagles' Lane Johnson. But Watt could very well be back in form in a few weeks time, if insiders are to be believed. On Sunday's episode of SportsCenter, analyst Jeremy Fowler claimed that the Watt can not only regain his form but also come up as the title of highest-paid defender, which is currently held by the Browns' DE Myles Garrett. T.J Watt poised to be the true comeback kid as per NFL insiders "Steelers, I'm sensing are optimistic they can reach a deal with Watt eventually," Fowler said. "My sense is that he will probably be the highest-paid pass-rusher in the league when this is all said and done. He wants to be a Steeler for life, the Steelers want that, he's a legacy-type player. "They believe at 30 years old he still has several good years left. They're just gonna have to come up with a number and a good guarantee structure. He did miss minicamp, so Pittsburgh has a lot of work to do. But typically, Pittsburgh perks up in these things around training camp and late July,' Fowler added. Last week, another NFL insider, Jesse Palmer, said during a talk show that TJ Watt may soon become the NFL's highest-paid defender, according to reports he had been hearing. Palmer also shed some light on Watt's contract negotiations with the Steelers and how it could be a particularly famous record held by Myles Garrett. "I'm hearing there's a chance Watt gets past [$40 million]," Palmer said. "Which is something we're really keeping an eye on, right? If he gets that $40 million a year, at the age he is at, he has every right to ask for it. I've talked on here a lot about the comparison between him and Myles Garrett. The numbers are almost identical in every aspect. … [Watt] has the right to try and get that." Sports writers Destin Adams and Kyle Crabbs also addressed Watt's future in the league and broke down why he's so valuable as a player. 'Watt's one of the league's best pure pass rushers, and he had 19 sacks as recently as 2023,' Crabbs wrote. Adams shared, 'If the Steelers' secondary can be better this year, I think Watt should be the odds-on favorite to lead the league in sacks as well as to win Defensive Player of the Year. The biggest hurdle still remaining is getting his new contract figured out so there are no distractions in his way come the regular season, but I'd be surprised if the two sides aren't able to come to an agreement before training camp concludes' Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story.
