Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Rey Mysterio has confirmed that the end of his legendary in-ring career is fast approaching. In a recent interview, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about his motivations for continuing to wrestle and his thoughts on retirement. Speaking on the LA PLATICA podcast in June, Mysterio admitted that he is very close to hanging up his mask for good. However, he revealed the one person who gave him a "second wind" and pushed him to keep going. The Influence Of Rey Mysterio's Son Mysterio explained that his son Dominik's entry into the wrestling business is what has kept him in the ring. He said he was very close to retiring before Dominik began his own career. "I think that once my son started to wrestle, that kind of pushed me to continue, 'cause I was really getting very close to calling it quits," Mysterio said. "But that just kind of gave me that second wind, and it pushed me to keep going." Even with this renewed motivation, Mysterio acknowledges that his time is limited. "I'm going to have to tap out," he admitted. "I still love what I do and I always have." A Father-Son Saga The relationship between Rey and Dominik Mysterio has been one of WWE's most compelling long-term stories. They made history in 2021 by becoming the first-ever father-son tag team champions in WWE history. However, their alliance famously imploded when Dominik turned on his father to join the heel faction, The Judgment Day. This led to a deeply personal and emotional feud between the two. The rivalry culminated in a high-profile match at WrestleMania 39, where Rey defeated his son. This complex journey, from partners to bitter rivals, is the "second wind" Mysterio refers to, as it gave his legendary career a new, personal chapter. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation In his interview, Rey also discussed the rare honor of being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame while still an active competitor. He was inducted as part of the Class of 2023. "The fact that I was inducted into the Hall of Fame before I even tapped out – I was like, I don't want to, I'm not ready to retire," he recalled telling WWE. "[WWE said] 'Like no, we're presenting this to you.' So truly honored to have been considered, you know, one of the Hall of Famers." This honor solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest high-flyers of all time, even as he prepares for his final chapter. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

The WWE legend, who missed WrestleMania 41 due to an unexpected injury, is now on track to return very soon. After months of recovery and plenty of questions about when he would be back, the latest reports confirm that the Master of the 619 is almost ready to step back into the ring. He was set for a big match at WrestleMania against El Grande Americano, but just 24 hours before the event, everything changed. Mysterio was pulled from the card after getting hurt during a tag match on SmackDown, leaving fans disappointed and worried. Now, with a return date in sight, hope is back. What happened before WrestleMania Just one night before WrestleMania 41, Mysterio teamed with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix on SmackDown to take on American Made. While their team picked up the win, things did not go smoothly for Rey. He ended up suffering a torn groin and also revealed later that he had a burst eardrum from the same match. The groin injury needed surgery, which ruled him out of WrestleMania completely. Mysterio wanted to go through with the match anyway, but WWE doctors and officials didn't clear him. Rey Fenix was chosen to fill his spot and face El Grande Americano instead. It was not the outcome anyone wanted, especially Rey, but his health came first. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Rey Mysterio's professional wrestling career began in 1992. Throughout his entire run, his character has never been a full-blown heel. The 50-year-old WWE Hall of Famer won two world championships, both as a babyface. He currently leads the Latino World Order faction, which he revived before WrestleMania 39. Rey Mysterio on a Potential Heel Turn During a recent interview with WrestleZone, Rey Mysterio was asked what it would take for WWE fans to turn on him. He explained that his laid-back nature would make a transition to a heel persona very difficult. He said, "They (fans) would really have to, like, push me to the edge. I mean, even my wife says, like, 'I never see you get mad at anyone but me. Like, why do you not fight? You don't fight with anyone, but when you want to fight, you fight with me.' So, I mean, it would be very hard for me to get pushed." The Closest Rey Mysterio Came to Being a Heel Mysterio did recall one period in his career when he came close to working as a heel. This was during his time in WCW as a member of the Filthy Animals. That has been the closest, but overall, my personality, my demeanor is very laidback. So, I think it would be very hard." He then went on to say that the only two wrestlers that are close to his excellence are the Late Eddie Guerrero and Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield. Ha put his uncle at Number two and JBL at Number three. Advertisement 'There's a bunch of guys that I'm better than that have had this title. You got the Honky Tonk Man, you got Bret Hart, you got Stone Cold, you got Shawn Michaels, you got Pat Patterson. I'm better than all of these guys. I don't know how old they were when they won it. They're all fossils at this point. But like, for me, I think that I'm only going to give you three, because I feel like five fishing for something there. I don't know if I like it, so I'm gonna go with me at number one, Eddie at number two, and then number three, I'm gonna go with JBL. I'm gonna give JBL his flowers,' Dominik Mysterio said.
