Junction improvement to be carried out at Puliancholai Road intersection near Thuraiyur

The State Highways Department will soon carry out junction improvement work at the Puliancholai Road intersection on the Thuraiyur-Athur State Highway in an attempt to reduce accidents at the spot. The work would be executed at an estimated cost of ₹92 lakh under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP). Situated at the foot of the Kollimalai, Puliancholai is a popular picnic destination in Tiruchi district. Although the road leading to Puliancholai from the Thuraiyur-Athur Road intersection was developed and strengthened in recent years, the intersection itself has emerged as an accident-prone zone. The improvement work would include widening the junction, installing signboards, and blinkers and construction of a median. The possibility of building a roundabout would be explored, sources in the Highways Department said. A team of senior officials of the department have inspected and assessed the road safety measures to be carried out at the junction. 'Frequent accidents were witnessed at the intersection as there is a slight curve on the Thuraiyur-Athur Road too at the spot. We have been seeking improvements to the junction over the past 10 years; we hope it now becomes an accident-free zone,' said N. Saravanan, a road safety activist. The Highways Department would relay the Thuraiyur-Athur Road for a distance of about 10 km at a cost of about ₹4.50 crore from the Musiri Pirivu Road, a senior official said. Besides this, the department will carry out improvements to the Thandalai Junction on Pulivalam-Musiri Road at an estimated cost of ₹1.25 crore. 'These are the two junction improvement works sanctioned for Tiruchi district under CRIDP during the current year,' a senior official said.
