Tragedy as mother Jendaya Stewart, 26, and daughter Lillyannah killed in car crash at Hat Head, NSW

A young mother and her toddler have tragically been killed after their car smashed into a tree and burst into flames. Jendaya Stewart, 26, and her daughter Lillyannah, two, were travelling along Hat Head Road, at Hat Head on the NSW Mid North Coast, about 9.40am on 10 July when they crashed. Police and firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze before discovering the pair's bodies inside the vehicle. Stewart, known affectionately to loved ones as 'Jenny' and 'Jen', was a proud Biripi and Thunggutti woman and an active member of her local community. Over the past few years, she had worked with a series of organisations and programs committed to preserving local lands and teaching bush skills, including National Parks Conservation Association, The Green Army, and as an agricultural farm assistant at Orara High School. Family have remembered Stewart as a 'beloved daughter and sister' who will be 'forever loved and deeply missed'. Jo-Anne Dacker, Stewart's mother, told her daughter was passionate about the environment and conservation. 'Jendaya was a member of Green Army and worked for Coffs Harbour aboriginal lands council with bush regeneration,' she said. 'During 2019 she (also) completed her certification to serve with the Rural Fire Service in Coffs Harbour during those disastrous fires of 2020.' Dacker said Hat Head, the site of the crash, always held a special place in her daughter's heart. 'Jendaya's love for Hat Head was immeasurable,' she said. 'She was so protective of the environment there.' Stewart also visited local schools to teach bush tuckers courses and was a member of the local art community, contributing to the Overwintering art project in Coffs Harbour in late 2019 and early 2020. In 2021, she also model for a fashion shoot for NAIDOC week. After several busy years, Stewart welcomed her daughter, nicknamed Lilly, in September 2022. On social media, Stewart gushed about the joys of motherhood as she shared doting photos of her little girl. 'Teaching my baby how to do the shuffle is so adorable,' one post reads. 'Seeing her copy me and collect them.. Teaching her culture.' Family say Lilly was 'beloved, adored, and protected' by her mother and was 'nanny's sweetest angel and poppy's best mate'. 'Adored and cherished.. Loved to the moon and back by all her family,' an obituary for Lilly reads. 'We will miss her sunshine and gorgeous smile in our lives.' Stewart and Lilly will be farewelled in a funeral service at Hogbin Drive Crematorium & Memorial Gardens, Coffs Harbour, on Saturday 2 August. Investigations into the cause of the crash continue. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Jessica Mauboy And Barkaa Bring Home NAIDOC Week On ‘Like A Version'

Jessica Mauboy has made her debut appearance on triple j's Like A Version segment, in the final days of NAIDOC Week. The Wakaman and Kuku Yalanji singer performed a cover of Yothu Yindi's 1993 single 'World Turning' from their third studio album Freedom, with a guest verse from Malyangapa and Barkindji rapper Barkaa. Watch the full performance from the duo below. In an interview conducted for the station's YouTube channel, Mauboy explained that she covered the song as it was one that she grew up with. 'It takes me back to being a child, growing up in the Northern Territory,' she said. 'This song is the theme song in the background. At that young age, I didn't quite know what the song meant – but I knew that it felt really great. 'Now that I'm older, I know that it means something much bigger. Yothu Yindi gave me the strength to go out into the world and be who I am – and be brave.' Barkaa, for her part, said that she wanted to 'pay homage' to NAIDOC. 'NAIDOC's theme [this year] is 'Our Next Generation',' she said. 'We're paying homage to our babies and our future elders. I really wanted to say that the world keeps turning; we have struggled, we have carried a lot on our backs, and we have kept that fire burning.' Jessica Mauboy feat. Barkaa – 'World Turning' In addition to performing the Yothu Yindi cover, Mauboy and her band performed a rendition of her debut solo single: 2008's 'Running Back'. Lifted from her debut album Been Waiting, the track featured a guest verse from American pop-rapper Flo Rida. It peaked at number three on the ARIA Singles Chart, and would go on to be certified double platinum by ARIA. Watch it below. Jessica Mauboy – 'Running Back' Mauboy's fifth studio album, Yours Forever, was released in February 2024. It debuted at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and sported five singles: 'Give You Love' (featuring Jason Derulo), 'Flashback', 'Never Giving Up', 'Forget You' and 'I'm Sorry'. She was nominated for three ARIA Awards that same year, including Best Pop Release for Yours Forever and Song Of The Year for 'Give You Love'. She won the ARIA for Best Original Soundtrack Or Musical Theatre Cast Album as part of the soundtrack for the limited series Faraway Downs, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Barkaa, meanwhile, was recently announced as a three-time NIMA nominee at this year's ceremony – at which, coincidentally, Mauboy is also set to perform. She is up for Album Of The Year for her second EP Big Tidda, as well as both Song Of The Year and Film Clip Of The Year for her track 'Ngmaka' – a collaboration with Leroy Johnson. Mauboy is also up for those two categories with 'Won't Stop', her track with Indigenous hip-hop supergroup 3% from last year's Kill The Dead. Record-breaking NAIDOC basketball carnival at Bendat centre

A record-breaking 106 teams from across WA have just wrapped up a special tournament at the Bendat Basketball Centre, a three-day celebration of culture, community and connection through the power of sport. Players travelled from as far as the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields, Kununurra, Leonora, Albany, Bunbury and other Great Southern regions to take part in the ninth — and easily the biggest — iteration of the NAIDOC Basketball Carnival. Boys, girls, men and women took the courts to compete in categories from under-10s to under 23s, but the event wasn't just about sport. Jayden Stack in the under-12 boys game for Binar. Binar Futures founder and executive director Adam Desmond said this year's numbers were an incredible rise on last year, when they had just nine teams. 'This is the biggest NAIDOC basketball carnival we've ever seen here in WA; it's a massive milestone,' he said. Jean Coyle, 16 and Shayla Hart, 14, from Bunbury. 'We've had kids waiting all month to play,' he said. 'Some even showed up on the day hoping to get into a team. We try to make it work. 'NAIDOC is a very important time for Aboriginal people, and everyone, to come together and celebrate culture. This event brings hundreds of young people together in a positive space.' Northern Star Resources helped provide accommodation for some of the people who travelled long distances. Premier Roger Cook pays the carnival a visit. The carnival also included family-friendly activations for all ages and an elder's room, a peaceful space offering a moment of rest, reflection and reconnection, as well as free health checks from more than 14 organisations. The event has become a key feature on WA's community sport calendar.
