AI to unlock over US$113 billion in productivity gains for Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by businesses and workers in Malaysia is set to accelerate the nation's economic growth across various sectors, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. In a statement today, Gobind said that Generative AI alone is projected to unlock up to US$113.4 billion in productive capacity for the country. Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai, China, yesterday, he underscored the shared responsibility of countries worldwide to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good. "In this AI-shaped era, collaboration is essential. "Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good. "The overarching goal is to bridge the digital divide among nations and enhance digital collaboration to ensure the development and governance of emerging technologies benefit humanity," he said. Gobind said Malaysia welcomes the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan and highlighted domestic efforts, including the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) last December to coordinate and drive the country's AI agenda. As the 2025 Asean Chair, Gobind said the country is spearheading the Asean AI Safety Network and leading the conversation on AI safety. The Network, according to Gobind, will act as Asean's regional platform for AI safety, facilitating best practice exchanges, research collaboration, standards development and responsible AI adoption. "By driving innovation, enhancing decision-making and optimising the use of precious resources, AI is not just changing industries; it is accelerating global development. "And in doing so, it reminds us that the technologies of tomorrow must be built together, across borders, with a shared vision for a better world," he said. Gobind also said Malaysia will host two major global events this year: the inaugural Asean AI Malaysia Summit in August and the Smart Cities World Expo Kuala Lumpur in September, aimed at bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and academics to discuss AI, innovation and digital transformation.

Malaysia sets sights on regional AI leadership with 2026-2030 action plan, says Gobind
KUALA LUMPUR: The forthcoming National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan 2026-2030, currently being formulated by the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), aims to position Malaysia as a leading regional AI hub while setting clear targets to improve its standing in global AI rankings. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Malaysia currently ranks 26th out of 36 countries in the Stanford HAI AI Index (2023) and 24th out of 193 countries in the Oxford Insights Government AI Readiness Index 2024. "On local talent development, the government has already rolled out several large-scale initiatives to boost the nation's workforce readiness for AI adoption. "One such initiative is the 'AI for My Future' programme in collaboration with Microsoft, which aims to reach nearly 800,000 Malaysians through interactive modules and guided training," he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 21). He was responding to a question from Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu (PH-Batu Gajah) on the country's preparedness for the rise of AI, including strategies for technology transfer, talent development, and integration in governance and key economic sectors. Gobind highlighted that the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has introduced programmes such as MyDigital Maker and Cikgu Juara Digital, which focus on digital skills like robotics and data analytics at the school level to empower students and educators. "We also have the AI@Work initiative with Google, targeting training for 445,000 civil servants using AI tools such as Gemini and Notebook LLM to enhance public service efficiency,' he said. He added that the government is also examining the legal framework, with plans to draft dedicated AI legislation to balance governance needs with Malaysia's regional AI hub ambition. - Bernama

Malaysia prepares legal framework for AI governance, says Gobind
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Digital is finalising a comprehensive report on legal frameworks for artificial intelligence (AI) to address governance gaps, Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced today. The findings, currently under review by the National AI Office (NAIO), will determine whether Malaysia introduces new laws or adopts sector-specific standards. Speaking at the launch of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd's *Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti* campaign, Gobind emphasised AI's cross-sectoral impact, noting that high-risk industries may need legislation, while others could follow guidelines. 'The Cabinet will decide the next steps after evaluating NAIO's study,' he told reporters. The minister highlighted global precedents, where countries balance innovation with oversight through flexible regulations. 'Some areas demand strict legal provisions for accountability, while others thrive with voluntary standards,' he added. The report will classify AI applications by risk level, proposing tailored measures for healthcare, finance, and public services.
