JM Bravo forgoes final year with LPU, looks to turn pro
JM Bravo is officially moving on from collegiate basketball, opting to skip his final year with Lyceum of the Philippines University as he looks to take the leap into the professional ranks. The 6-foot-3 forward bared his decision to GMA News Online on Tuesday, saying it is a decision he is making for his family. He ends a four-year stint with the Pirates that saw him help the squad reach the Final Four round for three consecutive years. "Maraming salamat Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila sa 4 na taon sa pag tulong at supporta lalo na mga LPU Community, Coaches and Teammates," Bravo said in an Instagram post. "And Buong pasalamat ko sa mga Boss Laurel Family and Lopez Family. Hanggang sa Muli!" Bravo's final season with the Pirates in NCAA Season 100 was marked by personal challenges. Early in the season, he was initially ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to the spinal injury he sustained in their 95-93 loss to San Sebastian College-Recoletos last September 11. Bravo then had an unexpected comeback early in the second round to provide some veteran presence alongside John Barba, Mclaude Guadaña, Gyle Montaño, and Greg Cunanan, rejoining the squad exactly a month after. ?After two games, however, he collapsed on the floor late in their 91-86 loss to Arellano University on October 19 at the FilOil EcoOil Centre, but Bravo braved through it as well and was still able to finish the season as LPU bowed to eventual champion Mapua University in the Final Four. —JMB, GMA Integrated News ?

Andrew Estrella is new Letran Squires head coach
NCAA Andrew Estrella is the new head coach of the Colegio de San Juan Letran Squires. Estrella will replace Willie Miller who steered the Squires to a Final Four run in NCAA Season 100. Estrella handled the UE Junior Warriors U16 team in the past two seasons and delivered the title in UAAP U16 boys basketball last December. "I'm incredibly thankful to Letran and Strong Group Athletics for this chance to lead the Squires," Estrella said in a statement. "Thank you to Fr. Raymond [Jose, OP], Fr. Vic, Boss Frank, and Boss Jacob for believing in me. I'll give my best and make sure not to let anyone down." Despite his new responsibility as a head coach, Estrella will still be serving in the University of the East. "I may have a new home with Letran, but there are no goodbyes," he said. "I'll still be consulting for UE. UE helped shape who I am as a coach, and I'll always be grateful for that." Joining Estrella in UE are Anton Escolin, JC Docto, and Kris Reyes, with Bryan Cay as strength and conditioning and Julianne Valencia as physical therapist. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Clint Escamis is CPC Basketball Player of the Year; Carl Berdal, Zam Nolasco take top volleyball honors for NCAA
Mapua University's Clint Escamis was named by the Collegiate Press Corps as its Basketball Player of the Year which will be given on Monday in its annual Awards Night. Escamis, the Season 99 Most Valuable Player, led the Cardinals to its first title since 1991 in NCAA Season 100. By the end of the elimination round, Escamis had averages of 15.44 points, 3.61 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.89 steals per game and was among the league's leaders in scoring, total assists, and steals in the past season. In the finals where the Cardinals swept De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Escamis posted averages of 24.5 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals to be named as Finals MVP. Carl Berdal of Arellano University and Benilde's Zam Nolasco, meanwhile, were named as the Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year, respectively. Berdal was named the Finals MVP of the Season 100 men's volleyball tournament as he led the Chiefs to its first title in men's volleyball. The Arellano veteran was among the league's top scorers at 11th place with a total of 255 points, a leader in spiking with 44.19% success rate, and second overall in receiving with an efficiency rate of 56.84%. Nolasco, on the other hand, was crucial in the Lady Blazers' campaign to reach their fourth straight title. The third year middle blocker was 12th overall in scoring with 211 points, and number one in blocking with 0.73 average by set, which earned her a spot in the league's Best Middle Blockers this season. In Game 1 of the finals, Nolasco paced Benilde with 21 points, eight from blocks, as the Lady Blazers eventually won the title. UAAP back-to-back MVP Kacey Dela Rosa of Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, was named as the Collegiate Press Corps Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while Bella Belen and Leo Aringo of National University were the top players in UAAP volleyball. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night
The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star. Brian Esquibel still proud of 'overachiever' Letran Knights despite finals heartbreak
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Colegio de San Juan de Letran's defeat in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball finals did not dampen head coach Brian Esquibel's pride in the Knights. The long-time tactician stressed that the team had exceeded expectations and vowed the only way forward is up as they set their sights on a redemption campaign come Season 101. And for the Knights, the work starts now. "Actually I'm very happy sa narating ng team kasi coming from top four tapos umabot ng finals, it's a big achievement na para sa amin kasi sabi ko nga sa kanila, baka hindi pa ito 'yung time kasi mga bata pa sila," Esquibel told GMA News Online last Wednesday. "Mahaba pang panahon 'yung mapagsasamahan ng team, sana maging lessons 'yung mga nangyari kasi kailangang mag-mature. And after ng game na 'to, magtatrabaho agad kami para sa next season." The Knights made some noise this season, leaning on veterans Vince Himzon and Bembem Bautista as well as young guns Dave Lardizabal, Christer Ambrocio, and Wayne Araño to end the elimination round at fourth spot with a 12-6 record. But in order to move forward, the Knights had to get past a huge roadblock that was De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the Final Four with the top-seeded Blazers holding a twice-to-beat bonus. Bautista went beastmode in the semifinals, unleashing 17 points in Game 1 that saw them sweeping the Blazers with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 win before detonating for a 27-point explosion in the do-or-die Game 2 to steer the Knights to a 22-25, 28-26, 25-14, 25-20 victory and into the finals. That win alone was already a historic one for Letran as it sent them to the championship round for the first time in 16 years. But the Knights faded in the finals against eventual champion Arellano University to cap off their stellar campaign.
