Prospects Noah Schultz and Braden Montgomery prepare to represent the Chicago White Sox in the MLB Futures Game

Braden Montgomery got a taste of the All-Star festivities in 2024 while attending the MLB draft. 'I was able to watch the Futures Game, the skill showcase that they did as well as the All-Star Game,' Montgomery said during a video conference call last week. 'I love everything that has to do with the All-Star weekend.' The outfielder will go from viewing to participating after earning a spot on the American League roster for the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game, which is Saturday in Atlanta. Montgomery and pitcher Noah Schultz are the two players representing the Chicago White Sox at the event that brings together some of baseball's top prospects. 'I love being around baseball and the more talent I can be around, the better I feel it makes me,' Montgomery said. 'So I'm excited to meet those guys and to see what they are like, see what kind of process they go through.' Montgomery entered Tuesday with a .261/.344/.444 slash line with 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 76 games between Single-A Kannapolis and High-A Winston-Salem. He is the No. 3 prospect in the Sox organization according to 'We have one of our coordinators that says it takes a long time to have a good season and a long time to have a bad season,' Montgomery said. 'You've got to figure it out and not give up on yourself and keep thinking through it.' The Boston Red Sox selected Montgomery in the first round of the 2024 draft and he was acquired by the White Sox as part of the Garrett Crochet trade in December. 'I'd say so far my season has been OK,' Montgomery said. 'I'm really, really excited to get the chance to go to the Futures Game. Outside of that, I would say it's been just all right. 'One of the areas I definitely want to continue to stay conscious about is swing decisions. I feel like as I've gotten to pro ball, I just kind of wanted to figure it out, go straight into it, see what pitches I can hit and which pitches I can't hit. From there we'll iron out the process and the approach and continue to take steps forward.' Montgomery, 22, is in his first professional season. He spent 2024 recovering from a broken right ankle suffered in the NCAA Super Regional with Texas A&M. Asked why he described his 2025 as 'just all right,' Montgomery added, 'Just because I've got high expectations for myself and I know what I'm capable of.' 'Pro ball is a completely new experience for me, it's different from college,' he said. 'So just wanting to go in there, and you'll see a whole lot of failure because it's baseball. But I want to iron out that and iron out my process to where I'm eliminating some of those failures.' Montgomery is enjoying the growing process. 'I feel like we've got a really good staff from top to bottom,' Montgomery said. 'I'm glad to be working with them and I'm looking forward to what the future holds as I get more accustomed to professional baseball.' Schultz has spent time at Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte during this year, his third professional season. The left-hander, an Oswego East product who the Sox selected in the first round of the 2022 draft, entered Tuesday 4-4 with a 4.76 ERA in 15 starts. Schultz has 71 strikeouts in 68 innings. 'It's been a big adjustment, changing to shorter schedules and going deeper in games,' Schultz said of his 2025 during a video conference call last week. 'There's been a lot of things I've been working on. I'm really happy with how my body feels and how I've been able to stay healthy throughout the year. I'm looking forward to continuing that. 'There have been some growing pains and some struggles I've had, but there's also been moments I'm happy with. There's a lot I can point out, but the only way to go forward with it is to look at the good things I've done and try to replicate those the rest of the year.' Schultz, 21, said the positives include staying strong and staying with velocity throughout games. 'This year, I've gone to the fifth, sixth inning multiple times,' he said. 'I'm happy, at the beginning of the year it was almost my velocity was going up deeper into games. 'There's a bunch of little pieces you've got to put together, but that was one of the first things I noticed was I was throwing harder later into games which showed the stuff I'm doing behind the scenes, the strength stuff, it's been working. But it's making sure I'm putting everything together.' ranks Schultz as the top prospect in the Sox system. This will be his second Futures Game after participating last season in Arlington, Texas. 'It's an honor,' Schultz said. 'It's something I had a great experience at last year and the opportunity to be able to go back at a different field is awesome and I'm really excited.' The Sox reinstated Luis Robert Jr. from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. The center fielder went on the IL retroactive to June 26, missing time with a left hamstring strain. 'He's ready to go,' manager Will Venable said before Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rate Field. 'He wanted to be in a spot where he could go and be himself and run around the field like we're used to seeing him do. So no limitations from his end. And for me, there won't be any limitations either.' In the corresponding move, the Sox optioned infielder Tristan Gray to Charlotte.

Clemson softball officially adds four transfers to its 2025-26 roster

Clemson softball is bolstering its roster with four new additions from the transfer portal ahead of the 2025-26 season, head coach John Rittman announced this week. The Tigers have landed Kiley Channell (FAU), Abby Dunning (Boston College), Corri Hicks (Oklahoma) and Sierra Maness (USC Upstate) as they look to build on their recent ACC Tournament title and another NCAA Super Regional run. Channell, an infielder from Keystone Heights, Florida, brings an impressive bat after two standout seasons at FAU. She earned 2025 AAC Second Team honors and was named the league's Rookie of the Year in 2024. Channell batted .330 this past season with 59 hits and 44 RBIs, and she set a school record with five hits in the game that clinched the AAC regular-season title against Tulsa. She also ranked among the nation's top doubles hitters as a freshman, finishing with 19 two-baggers in 2024. In the circle, Clemson adds a big arm in graduate transfer Abby Dunning. The Burr Ridge, Illinois native was a mainstay for Boston College, earning spots on the 2024 All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. She fanned 172 batters last season — third-most in the conference — and posted a 2.46 ERA while limiting hitters to a .207 average over 33 appearances. Dunning was also recognized on the College Sports Evaluators Preseason Top 50 Pitchers List for 2025. Behind the plate, Corri Hicks comes in from Oklahoma with two years of eligibility remaining. Hicks played in 24 games for the Sooners, including a postseason appearance where she homered in an 8-0 Norman Regional win. She wrapped up her freshman year with three home runs and showed flashes of power and run production whenever called on. Rounding out the incoming transfer group is Sierra Maness, a junior right-hander from USC Upstate. Maness was a force in the Big South, earning First Team All-Conference honors this spring after striking out 120 batters in 166 innings. Over two years with the Spartans, she notched 34 wins, three saves and 244 total strikeouts with a career ERA of 2.34. The new transfers will join a core group of 13 returners who helped guide Clemson to its first ACC Tournament crown and third Super Regional berth in the past four seasons. They'll also be part of a large 2025-26 signing class that includes seven incoming freshmen: Sarah Breaux, Sophie Burmeister, Keira Crosby, Lexie Hames, Maddie Johnson, Mac Pavese and Sarah Rocheleau. With a mix of experienced talent and young prospects, Rittman and the Tigers look poised to stay in the national conversation and build on the momentum they've created in recent years. Auburn baseball: Five players join roster through transfer portal

Auburn baseball: Five players join roster through transfer portal Auburn's coaching staff worked double-duty this weekend to help build its 2026 roster. Auburn baseball experienced a historical weekend by hosting its first-ever NCAA Super Regional, and the Tigers' coaching staff took full advantage by using it as an edge to fuel its transfer portal recruiting efforts. While Auburn fans were cheering on the Tigers at Plainsman Park, several transfer portal targets were fielding recruiting pitches behind the scenes. The 2026 roster is now taking shape as five experienced transfers are set to join the team in their pursuit of another College World Series appearance. Several key names will need to be replaced next season as Cooper McMurray, Carson Myers, Deric Fabian, and Sam Dutton are out of eligibility, and Ike Irish is receiving first-round chatter ahead of next month's MLB draft. Players such as Bub Terrell, Chris Rembert, Eric Snow, Chase Fralick, and Cade Belyeu are set to return next season, and the addition of these transfers will fit in nicely as Butch Thompson aims to fill the voids with the best talent available. Here is a look at the haul Auburn baseball secured over the weekend from the transfer portal. Jake Marciano Auburn added a left-handed pitcher in Jake Marciano, a rising sophomore, over the weekend. Marciano was Virginia Tech's primary Saturday starter this season, and finished with a 4-2 record with a 6.08 ERA and 71 strikeouts. He struck out at least two batters in all but one of his 14 starts this season, and struck out a personal-best nine batters in the Hokies 6-1 win over Notre Dame on April 5, where he allowed one earned run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. 2025 stats (Virginia Tech): 4-2, 6.08 ERA, 15 appearances (14 starts), 60 2/3 innings pitched, 70 hits, 42 runs allowed (41 earned), 71 strikeouts, 18 walks Ryne Farber Auburn added an infield piece in Ryan Farber, a shortstop from Texas State. The switch hitter has recorded at least two home runs, 48 hits, and 25 RBI over the last two seasons. He struck out 36 times last season, up from the nine he recorded as a freshman in 2024, but his stolen base production has increased from eight in 2024 to 17 in 2025. In the field, he fielded at a .962 clip in 2025 while recording 75 putouts and just eight errors. 2025 stats (Texas State): .267 average, 59 hits, 4 home runs, 33 RBI, 30 walks, 36 strikeouts, 17 stolen bases Drew Whalen Whalen, a right-handed pitcher from Western Kentucky, earned a spot on the Conference-USA All-Freshman team in 2024, and followed suit as a sophomore by building a 9-3 record in 16 starts, where he struck out 90 batters and walked 31 over 81 2/3 innings. His season-best performance came against Sam Houston State, where he struck out 10 batters and allowed zero runs on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He led the conference in wins (9), fifth in ERA (3.53), and third in strikeouts (90). 2025 stats (Western Kentucky): 9-3 record, 3.53 ERA, 16 appearances (16 starts), 81 2/3 innings, 90 strikeouts, 31 walks. Todd Clay There is no place like home. That is the case for Todd Clay, who returns to his hometown club after spending the 2025 season at UAB. Clay had a magical season at UAB, where he led the team in several categories inclduing hits (69), and slugging percentage (.539). The former Blazer infielder logged a .962 clip this season with only five errors and 31 putouts. Clay, a graduate of Auburn High School, was a member of the Tigers' 2021 state championship squad and is a member of the All-American Athletic Conference 2nd team. 2025 stats (UAB): .361 average, 53 games played (53 starts), 69 hits, 7 home runs, 51 RBI, .539 slugging percentage, six stolen bases, .962 fielding Garett Brewer The third pitching commit of the weekend is a left-hander formerly of Michigan State, Garrett Brewer. The rising junior appeared in 17 games in relief for the Spartans this season, where he recorded a career-high in innings pitched (34 1/3), strikeouts (41), opponent batting average (.223), and ERA (3.47). In Michigan State's 11-10 win over Minnesota on May 17, Brewer logged a season-best seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. 2025 stats (Michigan State): 2-2 record, 3.47 ERA, 17 appearances (0 starts), 1 save, 34 1/3 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts, 13 walks Contact/Follow us @TheAuburnWire on X (Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Auburn news, notes, and opinions. Oregon State's offense explodes to end FSU baseball's season in NCAA Super Regional

Florida State baseball's season ended in Corvallis as Oregon State blasted five home runs to beat the Seminoles 14-10 in game three of the NCAA Super Regional Sunday night. The Beavers advanced to Omaha on the back of two explosive innings that produced 13 runs, including a seven-run first inning. Oregon State's offensive outburst in the first three innings outdid FSU's best offensive showing of the Super Regional. Advertisement The Seminoles (42-16) chipped away at the lead but couldn't overcome the mountainous task, aided in part by leaving 10 runners on base. FSU outhit Oregon State 17-12, but failed to convert in a few big spots, ending two innings with the bases loaded. Of Oregon State's 14 runs, 11 came on the long ball, including a grand slam from Trent Caraway in the third inning, and six runs came with two outs. While the Beavers put up two touchdowns, FSU held them scoreless after the fourth inning, which allowed FSU to chip away at the deficit. Wes Mendes started for FSU, and he was unable to make it out of the first inning, just a week removed from a career-long outing of eight innings pitched. In his 0.2 innings on the mound, he allowed five hits, two being home runs, seven runs and struck out none while walking a batter and hitting another. The Seminoles used six pitchers, with Chris Knier going the deepest in his 3.2 innings of relief work. After his heroics in game two, FSU turned to Peyton Prescott again in the seventh inning, but he exited the game after throwing a pitch and appeared to injure his throwing arm. Advertisement Max Williams, Myles Bailey and Chase Williams all hit home runs for the Seminoles. M. Williams gave FSU its only lead of the night in the first inning with his two-run blast, quickly undone by the seven runs from Oregon State. C. Williams hit his second career homer in the second inning. Bailey blasted a two-run shot in the sixth to cut the lead to six. FSU scored a pair in the ninth inning on a C. Williams fielder's choice and Gage Harrelson's double. Four FSU players finished with three hits in the game, with Hunter Carns, Harrelson Bailey and C. Williams all combining for 12 of FSU's 17 hits. The Seminoles struck out nine times, their lowest number of strikeouts in the super regional after 29 combined in the first two games.
