Eight girls from Egypt's south rescued from FGM
The National Committee for Eradication of Female Gentile Mutilation (NCEFGM), co-chaired by the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) and the National Council for Women (NCW), has announced it has aborted an attempt to circumcise seven girls aged 10 to 12 in Assiut, some 350km south of Cairo, and another of a 9-year-old girl in Sohag, some 420km south of Cairo. This was in cooperation with the Public Prosecution. According to Sahar al-Sonbaty, Secretary-General of NCCM, the committee received a report stating that the families of the girls, who are cousins residing in the Abnub Centre in Assiut Governorate, intended to circumcise the girls. Another report was received from Sohag Governorate that the family of a 9-year-old girl also intended to circumcise her. Ms Sonbaty said that NCCM immediately got in touch with the public prosecutor in Assiut, and filed a complaint to take needed procedures. The prosecution started immediate investigations and summoned the girls' families. Numerous cases of intended or attempted FGM are frequently reported on the Child Helpline 16000, a hotline set up by the NCCM in 2005. The NCCM's Secretary-General thanked Assiut's General Committee for Child Protection and the Prosecution-General of Assiut for their prompt action to protect the girls. Raising awareness The NCEFGM was founded to spearhead awareness and advertising campaigns to enlighten Egyptians on the hazards and harms of FGM and how it had nothing to do with promoting chastity. Ever since its foundation it has been working closely with the State which itself is committed towards eliminating FGM in Egypt. The work of NCEFGM is closely supervised by both NCCM and NCW which together draw a plan of action for the work of the committee that includes among its members scores of seasoned experts and officials involved in reducing the incidence of FGM in Egypt. Among them are representatives of the ministries of Interior, Social Solidarity, Health and Housing, Education, Youth and Sports, Culture, Endowments, Justice, and Investment and International Cooperation. Al-Azhar and the Egyptian Churches are also represented in the committee, as are the National Council for Population, the Public Prosecution, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics, and the National Information Authority. Civil society organisations and the General Union of NGOs are also represented in the committee. Canada's Mark Carney derided online for vision of ‘Zionist Palestinian state'
On Wednesday, during the 2025 Nato summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared in an interview with Christiane Amanpour on CNN, where he made confusing remarks about the need for 'a Zionist Palestinian state', triggering backlash online. Amanpour asked Carney about his vision for peace in the Middle East, specifically concerning the issue of a Palestinian state, where its indigenous people can live in harmony and peace. In response, Carney said that 'in working on a path to a Palestinian state, living side by side in security with Israel… a Zionist Palestinian state if you will, that recognises the right of Israel to exist, not just to exist, but to prosper. We can't have peace unless we move towards that.' Many social media users, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGO) in Canada, criticised these remarks by Carney, who implied that the prime minister essentially 'wants Palestinians to adopt the political ideology of their oppressors'. Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, a grassroots NGO in Canada that defines its mission as being 'to enable Canadians of all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East', called Carney 'dead wrong'. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Today, Prime Minister @MarkJCarney suggested he would not recognize a Palestinian state unless it was 'Zionist.' In doing so, Carney is asking Palestinians to adopt the political ideology of their oppressors as a pre-condition for self-determination. He is dead wrong. Zionism… — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (@CJPME) June 25, 2025 Another Canada-based NGO, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), also shot back, saying that Carney's remarks are in direct contrast to Canada's foreign policy, 'which affirms the right to the creation of a sovereign, independent, viable, democratic, and territorially contiguous Palestinian state'. In a long thread on the social media platform X, NCCM said that Carney's remarks are 'insulting' and continue a trend of ignoring Israel's continuing war on Gaza, which several countries, as well as many international rights groups and experts, now qualify as an act of genocide. 7/8. But the comments today are insulting and devoid of the context of an Israeli government that has not only refused to recognize Palestine, but has continued to illegally occupy more and more Palestinian land as it carries out a genocide against Palestinians. — NCCM (@nccm) June 24, 2025 The fact that Carney mentioned a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine in the interview, but added that this Palestinian state should be a 'Zionist' one, was interpreted by many on social media as 'evil' and 'bigoted'. It was not on my bingo card that Prime Minister @MarkJCarney would call for something so hateful, bigoted, and cruel as calling for a "Zionist Palestine." I never imagined he was capable of such evil--evil is the right word--thinking. Does Carney not realize that it is Zionists… — Stephen Best (@BestStephenD) June 25, 2025 Many also argued that Carney demonstrated his commitment to Zionism, 'just like many other Canadian PMs before him'. Social media users did not differentiate between Carney's remarks about a 'Zionist Palestinian state' and his continuous support for Israel's ongoing war on Gaza, which has killed over 56,000 people. Mark Carney is a Zionist fanatic. There is no other explanation for his militarism and imperialism and his support for genocide in Gaza. The notion of a 'Zionist Palestine' is simply unhinged. I am actually shocked to hear it out of his mouth — David Robbins (@iroguerobot) June 25, 2025 In May, shortly after Carney was elected Canada's new prime minister, Canada co-signed a joint statement with unusually strong language targeting Israel with its G7 allies, the UK and France, calling Gaza's suffering "intolerable" and Israel's minimal aid allotment "wholly inadequate". Around the same time, the three countries threatened Israel with sanctions if it failed to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter. These recent moves could explain why so many on social media were shocked and outraged by the prime minister's remarks, which, according to them, stemmed from "ignorance". In May, four Canadians were part of a delegation with their European counterparts on a visit to the occupied West Bank when Israeli soldiers opened fire on them. In response, Canada demanded a full investigation and an immediate explanation, calling it 'totally unacceptable'. Israel said it 'regrets the inconvenience'. However, Canada did not take action towards Israel in terms of sanctions or cutting trade ties with the country, even though there were many organisations as well as Canadian political parties calling on the country to do so.

NCCM 2025: MOH To Focus On Lung Health Prevention And AI
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Health (MOH) is entering the final phase of its National Strategic Plan for Cancer Control Programme 2021–2025, with a renewed focus on strengthening cancer prevention, early detection and sustainable financing. In this regard Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad said the three-day National Cancer Congress Malaysia (NCCM) 2025, jointly organised by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and Sunway University starting today, is aligned with the ministry's plan in charting the next chapter of the strategic plan for cancer which is more data-driven, inclusive and forward-looking approach. 'Cancer remains one of the most pressing and devastating challenges in our fight against the pandemic of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). 'According to the National Cancer Registry Report 2017–2021, we now record over 169,000 reported cancer cases, an increase of 47 per cent from the previous cycle. The lifetime risk of cancer has also increased to one in eight Malaysians,' he said during his keynote address at the opening ceremony of NCCM 2025 themed 'Bridging Gaps, Building Hope, Empowering Lives', at Sunway University, Petaling Jaya, here today. Dzulkefly said in response to the rising threat of lung cancer, the ministry introduced the Lung Health Initiative during last year's NCCM which is currently among the top three most common cancers in Malaysia and a leading cause of death. He said Malaysia led the way on the global stage in cancer prevention and early detection with the adoption of the global resolution entitled Promoting and Prioritising an Integrated Lung Health Approach at the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78), co-sponsored by 15 other WHO member states. 'This is a historic milestone not just for Malaysia, but for global public health. It reflects our belief in a whole-of-planet approach for lung health that integrates prevention, digital innovation, and people-centred care. 'Implementation is already underway, across six states namely Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan and Sabah. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now being utilised for chest X-rays in selected health clinics and government hospitals for interpretation, improving accuracy and accelerating early detection for lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses,' he said. Dzulkefly also commended National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) for extending the effort through mobile AI X-ray units, which help screen underserved communities and workers in industrial settings.

Create Account An arrest warrant has been issued for Joseph Howard Coddington, charged with assault and uttering threats after a man threatened to burn down an elderly woman's house near Marconi Boulevard and Trafalgar Street on the morning of May 29. Police said the man also tried to spit on the woman before walking away. Based on 'the nature of the comments made,' the incident was deemed hate-motivated, police had said at the time. The woman wasn't physically injured. In a social media post on May 31, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said the victim was Muslim and was told to 'go back to your country.' 'This has happened just days before we mark four years since a Muslim family of three generations were murdered in a terrorist attack in London,' the post added. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Police on Tuesday said Coddington's whereabouts were unknown. They describe him as white, five-foot-eight, 150 pounds, with short brown and blonde hair, scruffy facial hair and brown eyes. They urge anyone who sees him not to approach but to call 911. Anyone with information or relevant dashcam, doorbell or security footage is asked to contact police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). London police chief Thai Truong said Saturday that police are committed to working with the Muslim community to address Islamophobia. 'As we prepare to mark the anniversary of the tragedy that took the lives of Our London Family, this recent hate-motivated incident is a troubling reminder that the work to confront anti-Muslim hate is far from over,' he said. Friday marks four years since four members of the Afzaal family – a Muslim family out for an evening walk – were killed in what police called an Islamophobic terrorist attack. The case is one of several recent alleged hate crimes in London. Last June, a northwest London home where pro-Palestinian signs had been repeatedly vandalized was set on fire, causing $30,000 in damage. And in November, two employees at a south London Arabic grocery store were sprayed with a noxious substance by a masked man. bbaleeiro@ Columnists Other Sports Ontario Toronto & GTA Canada

Muslim groups calls for 'action' after London woman spit on in alleged hate crime
London police are investigating after a man threatened to set a woman's house on fire in an incident they are calling hate-motivated. Just after 8 a.m. on May 29, a man approached an elderly woman outside her residence near the intersection of Marconi Boulevard and Trafalgar Street in the city's east end. He began yelling at her, threatened to burn down her home and attempted to spit on her, police said, before walking away southbound on Marconi Boulevard. "The actual nature of the threats made were deemed to be hate-motivated," said Sgt. Sandasha Bough, adding that police will not share specific details until charges are laid. In a social media post, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said a Muslim woman was the person targeted in the attack, and was told to "go back to your country" among other hateful comments. 'The [Muslim] community is exhausted from having this conversation and having to repeat ourselves every time an incident like this occurs," said NCCM legal director Nusaiba Al-Azem, who received a report on the incident and has been in touch with the family since Thursday. "The family's feelings are very similar to the same feelings that I hear from the broader community," she said. The incident has been passed on to the London police's hate crime unit, who are still investigating. There were no reported injuries, police said. It does not appear that the man and woman knew each other previously, Bough said, and there is no immediate threat to the public "This was a random incident, or so it appears at this time," she said. Muslim community reflects as June marks anniversary of other hate-motivated attacks Still, members of London's Muslim community say they are uneasy, knowing that this is the latest in several hate-motivated incidents against the Muslim community. "I think people are concerned and a little frustrated as well," said Selma Tobah, a mentor with the Youth Coalition Combating Islamophobia. "We're seeing that people are willing to put their threats into action." On Friday, it will be four years since a hate-motivated truck attack killed four members of a Muslim family in London, and Tobah said its impact is still felt by the community. "June 6 is a time where the broader London community remembers and reflects on what happened to Our London Family, but it really never leaves the forefront of the minds of Muslims in London," Tobah said. "We carry that incident with us in our day-to-day." "I know folks who don't run outside anymore, people who are careful about where in the city they go for a walk and how they cross the street," she added. June 11 will mark one year since a possible hate-motivated attack happened at another Muslim family's home in northwest London, where their front porch was set on fire. "We're talking about the same incident to a Muslim family in the same city at the same time of year," Al-Azem said. "It's hard not to feel like there's a pattern or maybe some kind of issue that is not being addressed. Both Tobah and Al-Azem said that while there has been more awareness around Islamophobia in London over the past four years, they would still like to see more political will to seriously punish hate-motivated attacks. "Instead of action, sometimes it feels like we get a lot of performance or we get a lot of words," Al-Azem said. "The fear is that there's a signal sent when you don't punish crime like this and when you don't bring somebody to justice," she said. "It will embolden others to behave the same way, and I fear that's what's happening in London." The male suspect in Thursday's incident is still at large, and police are asking for the public's assistance in identifying him. He is described as white, approximately 5'8" with a slim build and believed to be between the ages 27-32. He was last seen wearing a grey ballcap, work boots with red laces, and a yellow and black hoodie with "LOONEY" written across the chest in red.
