Back on podium after 13 years, junior women shuttlers hope to build on Badminton Asia Championships success

Tanvi Sharma continued her recent impressive run, winning bronze at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships on Saturday (July 26, 2025), along with Vennala Kalagotla, as India returned with two individual medals for women in the event for the first time ever. Tanvi and Vennala, the last two remaining Indians in fray, went down fighting to their respective Chinese opponents in straight games in Solo, Indonesia. While Vennala saved three match points in the second game before going down 21-15, 21-18 to Liu Si Ya, Tanvi, the current World No. 1 in juniors, lost to eighth-seed Yin Yi Qing 21-13, 21-14. These were also the first medals for Indian women in the event since P.V. Sindhu in 2012. The 16-year old Tanvi, who idolises former World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying, had recently become only the fourth Indian woman to reach the final of a BWF Super 300 event at the US Open. 'There were a lot of unforced errors which was disappointing but I am still happy to get a medal for India after 13 years. I have to get stronger and I was not well also through the week so overall it was ok,' she said. Switching between senior and junior events isn't easy either, she admitted. 'Out there I go all out and play freely, the level of players is very different and I know I have to improve to match them. In juniors, there is a little more pressure because there is more expectation. Add studies and the balance is not easy to manage. The big target now is the World Junior Championships later this year,' she said, adding that competing on home base – she trains at the NCOE, Guwahati, venue for the event – would not matter. Vennala, on the other hand, was the surprise element, the current World No. 103 in juniors overcoming higher-ranked opponents before falling short in the semifinals. 'What I realised is that I have to work on playing slower opponents and keep the rallies going, get faster and not allow the other player to control the pace,' the 17-year old trainee with Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad since 2019 admitted. 'This is my first international medal so I am really happy with the result but I know I can do better. More than myself, my coaches – Rahul Yadav and Jayant Rana – would be happier today. They have been instrumental in pushing me to work hard in singles even when everyone else, including myself, thought I was not good enough and should stick to doubles. This medal will push me to focus more now but I won't give up doubles completely,' Vennala insisted.

In first meet post injury, long-jumper Sreeshankar sails to 8.05m

Sreeshankar's father S Murali, also his coach, was a relieved man. He was there beside him on Saturday. His team was expecting around 7.9m but eight was beyond expectation. 'It was such a good sight,' he told this daily, his words laden with emotions. 'We were expecting somewhere around 7.9m. He didn't have competition behind him, only practice. It's not easy. But to see him jump 8.05m is more than satisfactory.' The coach said the road to recovery was not easy but helped by experts at the IIS and NCOE. Murali said that they shifted from Palakkad to Trivandrum because they could use the scientific facilities at the centre. Priyam Singh, a physio with JSW, has been by Sreeshankar's side when he was injured and now when he is back. 'Priyam was a great help and Sree's rehabilitation process was over around the end of the year in 2024 at IIS and by January we shifted to NCOE so that he can practice and recover,' he said. He said that Sreeshankar has been training well and clearing 8m but needs to get a bit more consistent. 'With Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games next year, our target would be those two mega events first but our ultimate goal would be the LA28.' The world championships in Tokyo could be touch and go as they don't have much time to qualify. But they will try. For the record, entry standard is 8.27m and Sreeshankar has 8.41 as his personal best. This has been a terrible year for horizontal jumpers. National record holder Jeswin Aldrin (8.42m) has not crossed 8m and in fact his personal best this season is 7.83m. Solomon David is the season leader with a jump of 7.94m. For now, Sreeshankar is back as the leader of the India pack.

Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu stuns Indian Army

Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) pulled off a stunning 5-1 upset victory over former champion Indian Army in a Pool-A contest of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup invitation hockey tournament at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Friday. However, the other two matches went largely according to the script with NCOE (Bhopal) putting it across Maharashtra 4-2 in Pool-A and multiple champion IOC eking out a 2-0 win over Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in Pool-B. HUTN took the day's honours with a splendid performance against an Army team that looked off-colour. The Army outfit's attack lacked sting and defence appeared lackadaisical. But full credit to the hosts who went all-out. HUTN, comprising seven players from the Centre of Excellence, Kovilpatti, created opportunities from the centre and the flanks, flummoxing the opponent no end. The scoreline would have been more had it converted the half-chances. Though Balachandar scored a brace, the hosts' triumph was a complete team effort. The defence comprising G.M. Pruthvi, Y. Anand, and Patras Tirkey thwarted quite a few dangerous run-ins by Army. While NCOE had it relatively easy, it was a battle of nerves between IOC and CBDT. Till half-time, both the teams battled hard without conceding a goal. However, in the third quarter, Sumit Kumar struck gold when he deflected home a fierce drive from former Olympian V.R. Raghunath. Affan Yousuf made it 2-0 in the fourth quarter, off a move from the right flank. The results: Pool-A: HUTN 5 (B. Sathish 14, Patras Tirkey 32, Balachandar 34 & 59, Manoj Kumar 57) bt Indian Army 1 (Atish Dodrai 42); NCOE (Bhopal) 4 (Tirloki Venvanshi 10, Mohit Karma 19, Vikas Valmiki 44, Mohammad Zaid Khan 55) bt Maharashtra 2 (Prajwal Moharkar 45, Rahul Shinde 48). Pool-B: IOC 2 (Sumit Kumar 38, Affan Yousuf 48) bt CBDT 0.
