Monitor presence of potentially carcinogenic chemical in Ranitidine: DCGI to drug controllers
New Delhi: Drug regulator DCGI has asked drug controllers of all states and Union Territories to direct manufacturers under their jurisdiction to monitor the presence of a potentially carcinogenic chemical -- N-Nitrosodimethylamine -- in antacid Ranitidine. Ranitidine is used to reduce the amount of acid the stomach makes and also in the treatment of acid reflux and stomach or intestinal ulcers among issue related to safety of Ranitidine drug due to presence of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) impurity has been under consideration for quite some time now and various measures have been taken from time to time, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) said in a communication on July 24. An expert-committee was constituted in December last year and the report of the expert committee was placed before the 92nd Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) meeting in April this year, the communication, which also had minutes of the DTAB meeting as enclosures, said. The communication said DTAB, after detailed deliberation, recommended that a larger committee is required to be constituted which will look into all the aspects, including the storage conditions of Ranitidine. Also it suggested that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) may conduct a study for assessing the safety of Ranitidine drug considering the presence of NDMA impurity. "The manufacturers should monitor the NDMA levels in the API/formulation and also take risk based measures such as reducing the shelf life etc," the communication said. "In view of above, as recommended by DTAB, you are requested to direct the manufacturers under your jurisdiction to monitor the NDMA levels in the API/formulation of Ranitidine and also take risk-based measures such as reducing the shelf life etc," it added.

Pakistan warns of fresh monsoon spell from Aug. 5 as rain death toll surges to 288
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Meteorological Department (PMD) warned on Wednesday that a fresh monsoon spell from August 5 onwards is likely to trigger heavy rains and flash floods in several parts of the country, as the death toll from rain-related incidents since June 26 surged to 288. Torrential rains have continued to wreak havoc across Pakistan since late June, killing 288 people in total as per data shared by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The rains have killed 136 children in total and injured 691 people. The Met Department also warned of flash floods in the northern regions' local streams. These areas include Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Kohat, Karak, Hangu, Tank, Dera Ghazi Khan, Murree, Galliyat and Azad Kashmir. 'A fresh monsoon activity with isolated heavy falls is expected to start from Aug 5,' the PMD said in its daily weather report. It warned that river flows are likely to increase up to the medium level under the influence of the upcoming monsoon spell. Authorities in Punjab issued a flood alert on Wednesday, warning of rising water levels in the Chenab, Jhelum and Sutlej rivers, with possible urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Lahore over the next 48 hours. The provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) urged residents in low-lying or riverbank settlements to follow precautionary guidelines and cooperate with local officials during evacuations. Pakistan, which ranks among the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, has witnessed increasingly erratic weather events in recent years. In May, at least 32 people were killed in severe storms, while a third of the country was submerged by devastating floods in 2022 that killed more than 1,700 people, affected over 30 million and caused an estimated $35 billion in damages. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has repeatedly directed authorities to intensify rescue operations in flood-affected areas of the country.

Pakistan to send two aid cargo planes for Palestine as Gaza hunger crisis deepens
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will dispatch two cargo planes full of aid and humanitarian relief to Jordan and Egypt and ensure their delivery to the people of Palestine, an official statement said on Tuesday, as the United Nations and international aid groups warn of growing starvation in the Gaza Strip. The aid comes as Israel's months-long blockade has crippled the flow of humanitarian supplies into Gaza, where the closure of UN-run distribution centers and restrictions on aid convoys have created severe access challenges. Under Israel's new distribution system, many Palestinians are forced to travel long distances, often under humiliating and dangerous conditions, to collect food, with some reportedly coming under fire while waiting in queues. The collapse of organized aid delivery has deepened fears of famine and widespread malnutrition, particularly among children. 'Under the directive of the Prime Minister, the Government of Pakistan has approved the urgent dispatch of critical humanitarian assistance to support the people of Palestine in distress,' the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a statement, adding that 'the NDMA has been tasked to arrange two chartered cargo aircraft, each with a capacity of 100 tons, to deliver essential aid.' The NDMA said the special flights, carrying urgently needed rations and sustenance items, will be prepared within the next two days. It added the aircraft will be routed through Jordan and Egypt to ensure swift delivery to affected areas. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the NDMA team will see off the flights from Islamabad, while Pakistan's ambassadors in Jordan and Egypt will coordinate receipt and onward delivery to the Palestinian areas. The NDMA also reaffirmed Pakistan's 'unwavering commitment' to supporting the Palestinian people during this challenging time. The UN World Food Programme has warned that nearly 100,000 women and children in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition, with about a third of the enclave's population reportedly 'not eating for days.' Doctors Without Borders has accused Israel of using 'starvation as a weapon' in its military campaign. Gaza's health ministry estimates that more than 60,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed since the war began in October 2023.

Pakistan set to dispatch aid to Gaza
