Kansas City Chiefs sign Trey Smith to $94M deal, top-paid NFL guard: Report

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs and Trey Smith are finalizing a four-year, $94 million extension with $70 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The new deal replaces the franchise tag given to Smith in February. Rapoport said Smith is now set to be the highest-paid guard in the NFL. End Zone Extra: Get the top Chiefs news and insider features all season long Smith was tagged back in February, giving him a one-year contract worth $23.4 million and starting the countdown to July 15. He would've been locked into playing under the tag had the two sides not come to a long-term agreement. It's safe to say Patrick Mahomes is happy about the deal. After a devastating Super Bowl LIX loss, many fans believed that Smith would be a player the Chiefs would be forced to part ways. However, an increase in the league's salary cap has made the franchise tag possible. Kansas City Chiefs: Read more stories from FOX4 In 2024, Smith started 17 games for Kansas City. In those 17 games he allowed only a sack and a half, according to NFL Next Gen Stats and ESPN. Smith's overall, pass blocking and run-blocking grades were all well above league average as well, per Pro Football Focus. The Chiefs' report day for training camp is this Sunday, and they will start practicing on Monday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 7 Philadelphia Eagles on the roster bubble entering training camp

With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble. The Eagles have a dominant roster, with ten players landing in the top ten rankings from ESPN's positional poll. Philadelphia has few holes on the roster, and even less opportunity for an under-the-radar or veteran player to steal a job or cause a surprise cut. In five days, they'll return to the NovaCare Complex entirely motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents. With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble. RB AJ Dillon Dillon, a 27-year-old running back, is returning to the field after missing the 2024 season due to a neck injury. The Eagles are hoping Dillon can replicate the success he had in Green Bay, where he amassed significant scrimmage yards between 2021 and 2023, but he's only under contract for $1,197,500. WR Terrace Marshall The former LSU star, still only 24, was once a second-round pick in 2021 but has had a disappointing NFL career. Marshall's best season came in 2022, when he had 28 catches for 490 yards and one score with the Panthers. Last season with the Raiders, Marshall had just three catches for 41 yards and offers intriguing athleticism as a long shot. TE Harrison Bryant Philadelphia has Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra as the top two tight ends, and Bryant will compete with Kylen Granson for a roster spot. Bryant finishes his 2024 campaign with nine receptions for 86 yards on 12 targets across 13 games with the Raiders, primarily providing depth at tight end behind All-Pro rookie Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. OL Kenyon Green Acquired in a trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Green was the No. 15 overall pick out of Texas A&M back in 2022. Green missed all of 2023 with a shoulder injury, and before suffering another shoulder issue last October, he led all guards in pressures allowed (36). He ranked third in quick pressures allowed (14), per NFL Next Gen Stats. OLB Patrick Johnson More of a pass rusher than run stopper, Johnson will compete with Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari for a roster spot. CB Eli Ricks Ricks was supposed to move up the Eagles' depth chart after a season spent watching and continuing to learn his craft. He'll compete with Adoree Jackson and Mac McWilliams for snaps. DB Lewis Cine The goal in adding Lewis Cine on January 8th was to give him a head start on the upcoming season. He's had some time in Vic Fangio's system. Now, he's expected to compete for a roster spot and hopefully live up to the 32nd overall selection the Minnesota Vikings spent on him in 2022.

Texans' Derek Stingley Jr. named NFL's top three cornerback by coaches, execs and scouts

How good is Houston Texans All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. following his breakout season last fall? Let's just say NFL coaches, executives and personnel members think only the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is better than him entering 2025. ESPN polled talent evaluators from around the league on the top 10 cornerbacks entering training camp. Denver Broncos star Patrick Surtain II garnered the top spot following a record-setting season under Sean Payton's defense. Trailing close behind was Stingley, who received several votes for the No. 1 spot, but also ranked as low as No. 4. "Best ball skills in the league, in my opinion," an NFC personnel evaluator told ESPN. "Some of the INTs and tracking the ball in the air, it's rare. That pick against Tyreek [Hill], 99% of DBs in league aren't making that play." Last season, Stingley set the standard in a top-10 secondary en route to helping Houston clinch a second AFC South division title. He finished second in pass breakups (18), sixth in interceptions (5) and allowed the second-lowest completion percentage among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps (46.7%), according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Houston knew losing Stingley wasn't an option, so it negotiated a new three-year extension worth $90 million this offseason to keep him around through 2029. At $30 million annually, he became the highest-paid defensive back in league history before the New York Jets inked Sauce Gardner, the 2022 No. 4 overall pick, to a four-year, $120.4 million extension earlier this month. While Gardner will earn more over four years, Stingley's $30 million annual salary remains the second-highest in league history. The difference? His $89 million guaranteed is still the highest-paid in total money. "He's physical, a lot thicker than he looks, movement skills explosive," an NFC assistant coach said. "He has always had this in his game; he just had a slow start to his career due to injury." As the Texans' No. 1 corner, Stingley gave up just 4.9 yards per target while allowing 42 completions on 90 targets. Opposing quarterbacks produced a 56.9 passer rating against him, which led all corners with at least 50 targets. In three seasons, Stingley's 31 pass breakups and 10 interceptions rank top five among all defensive backs. The Texans return to practice on Wednesday for the start of training camp.

Alvin Kamara's 52-yard TD, and Erik McCoy's big assist, make the Saints Play of the Day

ALVIN. #GBvsNO on NBC📱: NFL app // Yahoo Sports app: We've reached Day 52 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means we have an easy pick for the Saints Play of the Day: Alvin Kamara's 52-yard catch-and-go touchdown against the Green Bay Packers back in 2020. You can see it for yourself right here. Kamara was the star of the show on this one, but let's give his blockers some credit. Erik McCoy got out in front for Kamara and actually achieved a higher top speed than the running back; NFL Next Gen Stats tracking data found that McCoy peaked at 16.22 miles per hour compared to Kamara's 15.28. That's insanely impressive. The Saints drew up a good play here with Drew Brees quickly lobbing the ball to Kamara while McCoy paved a path for him to the end zone. It's a shame they couldn't capitalize on this momentum to win the day, but it still turned out to be an electric moment in a game that looked all-but-lost. Brees has already hung up his cleats, and we don't know how many more years Kamara has left in him. So let's take some time to appreciate these stars while they're still wearing black and gold.

What Ravens fans should know about the Cincinnati Bengals before training camp begins

With mid-July fast approaching, we're looking at what Ravens fans should know about the Cincinnati Bengals before training camp begins. The Ravens still have one of the deepest teams in the NFL after several key departures and the retirement of Michael Pierce during the offseason. Such attrition provides the opportunity for younger players on the roster to assume larger roles while maintaining a Super Bowl window for a team that'll have new starters at several key defensive positions. Over the next two weeks, we will conduct mini-previews of the four AFC North teams as they begin reporting for training camp, with the Ravens' rookies set to report a week from Tuesday. Cleveland is next, with Cincinnati reporting on July 19 and Pittsburgh reporting on July 23. With mid-July fast approaching, we're looking at what Ravens fans should know about the Cincinnati Bengals before training camp begins. Bengals' external free agency or trade additions this offseason: T.J. Slaton, DT LB Joe Giles-Harris G Lucas Patrick HB Samaje Perine Oren Burks, LB Bengals' external free agency departures this offseason: LB Joe Bachie - Signed with Indianapolis Colts RB Trayveon Williams - Signed with New England Patriots OT Trent Brown - Signed with Houston Texans DL Jay Tufele - Signed with New York Jets RB Khalil Herbert - Signed with Indianapolis Colts LB Akeem Davis-Gaither - Signed with Arizona Cardinals DE Sam Hubbard - Retired The Bengals selected Hubbard in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in 104 regular-season games with a streak of 88 consecutive starts from 2019-24. His career totals included 398 tackles (236 solos), 55 TFLs, 38.5 sacks, 16 PDs, one INT, six FFs, and five FRs. His 38.5 sacks are the fourth-most among all players in the 2018 rookie class. Bengals key weapons Joe Burrow is a top-three quarterback, but the most impactful news of the off-season was the Bengals signing their WR duo to historic deals totaling $276 million. This past season, Chase became the fifth player since the merger to lead the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches in the same season. Chase caught 127 of his 175 targets for 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns. The 26-year-old Higgins caught 73 of 109 targets for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns over 12 regular-season games in 2024, and after the contract extension, he will remain a Bengal for the foreseeable future. Will the Bengals' free-agent additions pan out? Slayton ranked third among qualifying players in run stop win rate last season (NFL Next Gen Stats). While not a big pressure guy, he will definitely help a defense that needs to improve against the run. Perine was the backup running back during the team's deep playoff runs in 2021 and 2022, including a key reception in the AFC championship win over Kansas City. Perine is an excellent pass blocker who should complement Brown and coach Zac Taylor's offense. Burks has played 108 games in eight seasons. He started two of his 17 appearances with the Eagles and totaled 41 tackles. With Akeem Davis-Gaither on the move to Arizona and Germaine Pratt requesting a trade, getting a linebacker was a big priority for Cincinnati's defense and new coordinator Al Golden. How did the Bengals approach the NFL draft The Cincinnati Bengals made six picks, beginning with the No. 17 selection of the first round, which they used to improve a troubled defense with Shemar Stewart. The complete list of Bengals 2025 NFL draft picks were EDGE Shemar Stewart (Round 1, Pick 17), LB Demetrius Knight Jr. (Round 2, Pick 49), G Dylan Fairchild (Round 3, Pick 81), LB Barrett Carter (Round 4, Pick 119), T Jalen Rivers (Round 5, Pick 153), and RB Tahj Brooks (Round 6, Pick 193), according to the Cincinnati Bengals. When does training camp begin for the Cincinnati Bengals? The Cincinnati Bengals' training camp is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 23rd. Rookie players will report on Saturday, July 19th, and veterans will report on Tuesday, July 22nd. The Bengals will hold eight open practices at the Kettering Health Practice Fields, located adjacent to Paycor Stadium. The first open practice is on July 23rd, with subsequent open practices on July 24th, 25th, 28th, 30th, 31st, and August 3rd. Additionally, there will be a special Saturday night practice in Paycor Stadium on August 2.
