Land transfer delay stalls ICCC project in Thiruvananthapuram

Kochi: The International Convention Centre project (ICCC) proposed at Akkulam in the state capital has hit a roadblock, with proceedings stalled due to the IT department's delay in approving the transfer of land to the tourism department. Bureaucratic hurdles are slowing progress on this much-anticipated project, which is expected to significantly boost MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) tourism in the city. Despite the state govt's renewed focus, the transfer of 49 cents of land owned by Technopark near the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) campus is still awaiting clearance from the IT department. "We are waiting for the IT department's concurrence. This is a priority project for the govt, given the growing demand for MICE infrastructure in the capital. However, some technical issues are causing delays. We are working to resolve them and get the project back on track," said a senior tourism department official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like News For Jack Nicholson, 87, He Has Been Confirmed To Be... The ICCC project is planned under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL) overseeing its coordination and development. According to the latest plan, only 85% of the land—classified as dry—will be used for construction, while the remaining 15% wetland will be preserved in accordance with govt regulations. The project was first proposed in 2007, when 49 acres near NISH were allotted for the venture. An agreement was signed with K Raheja Corporation under the PPP model, and the foundation stone was laid in 2008. The original design includes a two-level convention centre with 1,500 seats, a four-star hotel, marina, and exhibition hall. The groundbreaking, initially scheduled for 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism officials are now awaiting swift action from the IT department to revive one of the capital's most significant infrastructure initiatives.
