Mason Miller trade: Padres land elite pitcher in seismic deal with Athletics

In a startling move that sends the game's most dominant reliever across the state and to another league, the Athletics have agreed to trade Mason Miller to the San Diego Padres, perhaps signaling a greater revamp to come at Petco Park. Miller, 26, has struck out 14.2 batters per nine innings in his two full seasons as a reliever, and this year has posted a 1.01 WHIP while fanning 59 batters in 38 ⅓ innings and nailing down 20 saves. The Padres also acquired left-hander JP Sears, a workmanlike back-end rotation presence who has a 4.95 ERA in 22 starts this season. MLB TRADE DEADLINE: Grading every deal on baseball's deadlne day While Miller might have been seen as a franchise cornerstone as the A's make their way from Oakland to their Yolo County stopover in Sacramento all the way to Las Vegas – perhaps by 2028 – the club clearly saw too much upside in San Diego's return. San Diego paid a stiff price to pry Miller from the A's, sending them 18-year-old high Class A shortstop Leo DeVries, a consensus top five prospect in the game and the Padres' top trade chip. The Padres, meanwhile, are perched just three games behind the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, and hold the No. 3 NL wild card spot. Reports indicated the club might be willing to buy and sell this deadline, and perhaps flip All-Star closer Robert Suárez to gain payroll flexibility. Now, they have the roster latitude to do so. Or, they could keep Suárez and pair him with Miller alongside an utterly dominant bullpen featuring All-Stars Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon along with Jeremiah Estrada. The Padres will also send RHP Braden Nett, RHP Henry Báez and RHP Eduarniel Nuñez to the A's in the deal. Padres add all-star closer Mason Miller and lefty JP Sears in trade deadline blockbuster

The San Diego Padres acquired hard-throwing closer Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears in a deal with the Athletics on Thursday, adding major upgrades to their pitching staff in a trade deadline blockbuster. Article content The Padres gave up an impressive package of prospects, sending highly-regarded shortstop Leo De Vries and right-handed pitchers Henry Baez, Braden Nett and Eduarniel Nunez to the A's. Article content Article content San Diego general manager AJ Preller was his usual aggressive self at the deadline, trading a big chunk of his thin farm system's best talent to acquire Miller, one of the majors' most dynamic relievers, and dependable starter Sears. Article content Article content The Padres entered Thursday in the National League's final wild card spot at 60-49 after sweeping the New York Mets on Wednesday for their fifth consecutive win overall. San Diego trails the defending World Series champion Dodgers (63-46) by just three games in the NL West, and Preller clearly believes his veteran core has World Series potential. The 26-year-old Miller, whose fastball averages 101 mph, has 20 saves in 23 opportunities, a 3.76 ERA and 59 strikeouts for the A's this season. He was an All-Star in 2024 and is under team control through the 2029 season. Article content Article content Suarez, who leads the majors with 30 saves, has featured in trade rumors throughout July because he can reach free agency this winter. Miller's arrival provides Preller with options in the final hours before the deadline. Article content But Preller paid a hefty price for Miller: The 18-year-old De Vries is one of the highest-rated prospects in all of baseball _ ranked No. 3 by — and the jewel of a San Diego farm system depleted by years of Preller's aggressive dealing. Article content The switch-hitting De Vries, who spent this season at High-A Fort Wayne after the Padres signed him out of the Dominican Republic in January 2024, pairs exceptional plate discipline and the potential to develop significant power with above-average fielding talent. Article content Baez and Nett are also solid prospects with major league potential, while Nunez made his major league debut with four appearances for the Padres in July. Article content Sears will be an option for the San Diego rotation, particularly if Preller decides to deal inconsistent right-hander Dylan Cease, who will also hit free agency this winter. The 29-year-old Sears is 7-9 with a 4.95 ERA this season, striking out 95 batters over 22 starts.

Giants rumors: San Francisco willing to trade Justin Verlander at deadline

The post Giants rumors: San Francisco willing to trade Justin Verlander at deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. Once considered contenders for the NL West crown, the San Francisco Giants have dropped in the standings over the last month. The Giants have lost five straight games and 11 of their last 13. Mired in an ugly slump, San Francisco signaled that it's ready to become a seller at the trade deadline by shipping talented reliever Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets on Wednesday. Now veteran starter Justin Verlander could be the next big name the team moves ahead of Thursday's deadline. With the former MVP on an expiring contract, the Giants are making Verlander available, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.'Out of respect to the future Hall of Famer, the Giants are open to working out a deal if it makes sense' for the team and the player, Morosi added. Giants put Justin Verlander on trade block after falling out of division race While the 20th-year veteran has struggled this season, he has strung together back-to-back solid starts. Verlander finally picked up his first win of 2025 in his 17th outing of the year. On the season he's now 1-8 with a 4.53 ERA, 1.489 WHIP, 85 ERA+ and 77 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. However, he's allowed just one run on seven hits and collected 10 strikeouts in his last 10 innings. Verlander signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Giants over the offseason. He was hoping to bounce back from his brutal 2024 campaign with the Houston Astros. And the Giants were banking on Verlander still having something left in the tank. It's possible the 42-year-old starter draws some interest ahead of the deadline on his name alone. The three-time Cy Young winner has two World Series rings and a proven track record of postseason success. Just last month the Giants appeared poised for a second-half divisional battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco moved into a tie with LA for the NL West lead on June 13. After trading for Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers, the team appeared all in. But Devers has struggled since switching teams and the Giants' offense hit a historic low while getting swept by the Mets. San Francisco has fallen nine games back in the division and the team appears ready to recoup whatever value it can from Verlander as the trade deadline nears. Astros rumors: Houston making ‘big push' for star Padres pitcher

The post Astros rumors: Houston making 'big push' for star Padres pitcher appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros are trying to keep up in the Major League Baseball arms race at the trade deadline, as big names get sent all over the league. Houston hasn't made a big move just yet, but its big swing could be just on the horizon. The Astros need pitching help, and they could be targeting San Diego Padres starter Dylan Cease in a deal. It's unclear if the Padres are going to actually move off of Cease at this moment, but the Astros are trying to get their hands on him according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand. 'The Astros are making a big push for Dylan Cease, with one source saying the starter is Houston's 'main target,'' Feinsand reported on X, formerly Twitter. The Padres are in a bit of an interesting spot as a team that is talented enough to contend for a playoff spot, but also one that could position itself as a seller at the deadline if it doesn't feel like it can compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Cease would certainly get them a big return, especially from a contender desperate for pitching help like the Astros. Cease is having a difficult year in 2025, with just a 3-10 record in 22 starts for the Padres. He has a 4.79 ERA and has struggled with his control a bit, walking 47 batters in 118 1/3 innings. However, he is still a strikeout machine (153 strikeouts this season) and has the kind of stuff that teams covet in their starting rotation. The Astros will want to act fast at the trade deadline so that they don't miss out, especially after they have seen some of their chief rivals make big swings around the league. Earlier on Wednesday night, the Seattle Mariners reunited with star third baseman Eugenio Suarez in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which will make it that much harder to fend Seattle off in the AL West race. However, if the Astros can shore up one of their only weaknesses and add Cease to the rotation, they will immediately solidify themselves as one of the favorites to win the AL pennant this fall. Fuel Added to Dylan Cease Trade Rumors as Padres Replacement Plan Emerges

The San Diego Padres are very serious about trading Dylan Cease before today's trade deadline because they are apparently in pursuit of making a trade for his replacement. The have been rumors since last year about the Pads moving the 2022 Cy Young runner-up. However, with him having a down season and likely to leave in free agency this winter, rumblings about the club trading him this week have picked up in recent days. Heading into Thursday's trade deadline, new MLB trade rumors have pointed to the Houston Astros having him at the top of their trade wish list. What makes the Cease trade speculation fascinating is that San Diego is in the thick of the Wild Card race and just three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Although he isn't having a good season, Cease's departure won't make the team better for the rest of the season. Well, it seems the Padres want to move Cease while also staying competitive in the Wild Card and NL West race. And they had a specific player in mind to replace him before the 5 PM ET MLB trade deadline. 'Baltimore Orioles right-hander Charlie Morton is one starting pitcher the San Diego Padres are pursuing as a potential backup plan if they trade right-hander Dylan Cease, according to sources briefed on the discussions.' The Athletic However, the outlet also added an important nugget of information to caution fans about a potential deal for the two-time All-Star. 'The Padres are involved in multiple talks with multiple teams. Meanwhile, as many as 10 teams are pursuing Morton,' they wrote. The 41-year-old is having a down year in what could be his final campaign in the league. However, he is a very competent starting pitcher who has a lot of experience in playoff runs. Furthermore, he has a 3.60 ERA for his career in the postseason. Even more momentum was added to a Cease trade on Thursday when it was revealed the team had completed a rumor trade for stud Athletics closer Mason Millar and starting pitcher JP Sears. The deal strengthens an already good bullpen and gives them a solid depth addition if they can move Cease before this afternoon's deadline.
