NMC's ethics board rejects 162 patients' complaints on medical negligence, RTI
NEW DELHI: As many as 162 patients, who had approached the National Medical Commission (NMC) ethics board against the decision of the State Medical Councils (SMC) regarding complaints of medical negligence and misconduct against doctors, have been rejected in the past four-and-a-half years, an RTI has revealed. This is despite NMC's landmark decision earlier this year, when it overturned its earlier verdict of rejecting patients' and their relatives' appeals to approach its Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB), which regulates professional conduct and promotes medical ethics in the country, for redressal of their complaints. In an RTI reply, the NMC to a query from activist Dr K.V. Babu on the number of appeals of patients returned by EMRB from September 25, 2020, to the present, responded that it was 162. To another query, on appeals filed by Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) against SMC decisions to EMRB during the same period, the number was 156. However, to another question on the number of appeals filed by RMPs that EMRB rejected during the same period, the RTI reply, dated June 19, got the answer 'nil.'

Outgoing Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo has signed a resolution recommending the adoption of "standard names" for the islands and features in the West Philippine Sea. "Signed National Maritime Council (NMC) Resolution No. 002 (2025) recommending the adoption of the standard set of Philippine names for 131 features of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in the West Philippine Sea," said Manalo in one of his last moves as DFA Chief before stepping down on June 30. Manalo, who will return as Manila's envoy to the United Nations in New York, will be replaced by Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Ma. Theresa Lazaro, the country's top negotiator to the Association of South East Asian Nations and China. With six coastal countries claiming all or parts of the South China Sea and attaching their own names for claimed areas, the nomenclature has been part of the disputes and has sparked confusion for the rest of the world. International names have been adopted for most contested features. In an administrative order by former president Benigno Aquino III in 2012, the Philippines officially named areas on the western side of the archipelago as the West Philippine Sea. President Ferdinand Marcos in 2024 issued an executive order creating the National Maritime Council to formulate policies and strategies towards a unified, coordinated, and effective framework on maritime security and domain awareness. OCW is supplying water at 2-metre pressure, required force 12–16 metres
1 2 Nagpur: Even as residents across Nagpur continue to suffer from dismal water supply — with pressure as low as 1 to 2 metres in several areas as against required 12–16 metres — Orange City Water Pvt Ltd (OCW) reportedly skipped a high-level review meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently. The firm's no-show, despite a formal invite from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) water works department, has further angered senior leadership and is being seen as an act of defiance. TOI earlier reported that Fadnavis directed NMC to begin the process to terminate OCW's contract. A senior civic official confirmed that the order is now being legally vetted to ensure it stands if challenge. "This time, the termination is being done formally and our legal team is involved to avoid any procedural flaws," the official said. Union minister Nitin Gadkari, present at Sunday's meeting, came down heavily on OCW's longstanding failures, particularly its refusal to increase water pressure. "OCW is supplying water at barely 1–2 metres pressure in many areas. The OCW claims pipelines will burst if pressure is raised to the required 12–16 metres. Large parts of North and East Nagpur continue to suffer, with water being supplied for just 2–3 hours daily. Many localities remain dependent on water tankers. NMC had asked OCW to convert low-pressure "red zones" into "green zones" by fixing leakages, removing illegal connections, and deploying real-time pressure monitoring systems. However, there has been negligible progress. OCW's absence from the CM's review meet has only hardened the administration's stance. "The OCW was informed and expected to attend. Absence of anyone from the OCW at this crucial juncture is unacceptable and only justifies the need for its removal," said another senior official. Superintending engineer (water works) Shweta Banerjee confirmed that OCW officials were invited for the meeting, but none was present. OCW officials were not available for comments. Notably, Nagpur receives over 750 million litres per day (MLD) from Kanhan and Pench sources, yet non-revenue water — losses due to leakages and theft — remains at over 40%, exposing deep inefficiencies in OCW's operations. With Gadkari and Fadnavis aligned on the issue and the termination process already underway, OCW's days in Nagpur appear numbered unless it delivers a swift and verifiable turnaround.

Nashik: State minister for food and civil supplies Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday expressed the need to conserve Godavari river and make it pollution-free ahead of upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. "Hence, we should first stop the release of effluent into Godavari river," he said. "There is a need to conserve the river and make it pollution-free ahead of forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela," said Bhujbal. On June 14, Bhujbal visited Dwarka Circle along with officials from various departments. He blamed both Nashik Municipal Corporation and the police authorities for not taking initiatives for traffic management at Dwarka Circle. Bhujbal also warned that he would sit there if things did not improve. A day after Bhujbal's visit, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) conducted a drive against encroachment on both sides of the service roads in Dwarka Circle towards Mumbai Naka and towards Ozar from June 15 onwards. The minister said things were improving as he did not find any traffic at Dwarka Circle on Friday. Bhujbal also expressed the need for the civic body to ensure that encroachment does not create hurdles for vehicular traffic on various city roads and junctions. Bhujbal also said NMC should focus on smooth functioning of the traffic signals which should change to red or green as per the flow of vehicles. Stating that Nashik city does not need vertical growth, Bhujbal said that instead of going for vertical development like Mumbai and Pune, focus should be on horizontal development of Nashik city. Instead of bringing in polluted industries, focus should be on developing Nashik as a tourist destination, he said.

NMC seeks disbursement of Rs4,000 crore for Kumbh Mela works
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has formally requested Rs4,000 crore from state govt to fund major projects ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The civic body has asked for these funds to be allocated by the end of March 2026. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a letter sent to state govt, the NMC emphasized on the urgency of the funding, stating that the proposed works require a two-year time frame for completion. To facilitate this, the civic body has urged the govt to include the provision for these funds in its supplementary demands during the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislative assembly, which is scheduled to begin on Monday. Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri confirmed the demand and said, "We have already sent a letter to state govt in this connection. We hope the funds will be approved in the supplementary demands during the upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly being held in Mumbai." The civic administration has prepared a Rs15,000 crore plan for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, slated to be held between 2026 and 2028. The major three amrit snans (holy bath) will take place in Aug and Sept 2027. The NMC needs to start all major works which require around two years. The civic body is also in the process of starting works for land acquisition at Sadhugram, construction of bridges, construction of new sewage treatment plants (STPs), sewage network, among other works. In the first phase, the NMC will undertake works worth Rs 7,779 crore, of which around Rs 4,000 crore are to be spent by March 2026. Keeping this in mind, the civic body has written to state govt, seeking funds.
