Nashik city bus service completes 4 years, sees surge in passengers & routes
Nashik: The civic body has expanded its city bus service to become a vital transport option for the city, as passenger numbers have risen significantly in the four years since operations commenced. On 8 July 2021, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) assumed control of the city bus service from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), initially deploying 27 buses across 11 routes. At that time, the service averaged 5,000 passengers daily and generated a daily income of Rs 1.3 lakh. Currently, the civic body operates 250 city buses on 60 routes across Nashik. NMC officials said average daily passenger footfall has increased to 70,000, with daily income reaching Rs 21 lakh over the past four years. A majority of commuters regularly utilise the city bus service, with some opting for buses over personal vehicles to reach their workplaces. Additionally, the number of students obtaining bus passes at concessional rates has grown in recent months. "I am using the city bus service for a few months instead of using my vehicle as the city bus service is effective. One can also track the location of the bus, which saves time as you can leave for the office accordingly," said Rakesh Desle, who works for a private company. The bus service is managed by NMC's transport wing, Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (NMPML). NMPML operates 250 buses across the city through two private agencies on a procure, operate and maintain basis. In addition to the 60 urban routes, NMC runs city buses in rural areas such as Trimbakeshwar, Pimpalgaon, Sinnar, Ozar, Sayyad Pimpri, Mohadi, and Saikheda, among other nearby rural destinations, covering approximately 27 bus terminals, two bus depots, and 1,440 bus stops.

Nashik civic body to replace 50 diesel buses with electric ones
Nashik: To reduce air pollution, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) approved a proposal to replace its 50 diesel buses with electric buses provided by govt. The general body of the civic body granted approval to acquire the electric buses from govt and substitute the existing diesel fleet as part of the city's pollution reduction measures. Currently, NMC operates a total of 250 buses, including 200 CNG and 50 diesel buses, through its transport wing, Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (NMPML). Govt sanctioned 50 electric buses for Nashik city and finalised a private firm to supply and operate them for NMC. The civic body is expected to sign an agreement with the designated private firm within the next two to three months. Officials said electric bus operations will commence operations once the 50 buses are received. They also said the agency must provide a bank guarantee of Rs 2.6 crore before signing the MoU for operating and managing the electric buses on city roads. The civic body aims to deploy these electric buses before the Kumbh Mela, scheduled for 2026-27. NMC officials said the operating rate for the electric buses has been finalised at Rs 71 per km payable to the agency, with the NMC receiving a subsidy of Rs 24 per km from the govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Install the Perfect Pool at Home – Start Here Backyard Pool | Search Ads Learn More Undo Consequently, it will cost the civic body Rs 45 per km to operate the 50 electric buses. The transport utility also serves rural areas, including Trimbakeshwar, Dindori, Sinnar, Ozar, Saikheda, Pimpalgaon, and other locations. Additionally, the civic body is constructing an electric bus depot near Adgaon truck terminus on the city's outskirts. The depot will feature charging facilities for the electric buses, alongside parking, repair and maintenance, and other necessary amenities.

30% drop in Nashik city bus occupancy, transport utility diverts 20 vehicles to rural destinations
Nashik: Daily passenger occupancy on Nashik city buses has declined by 30% due to the summer vacation of schools and colleges. While in the first week of March, the occupancy was around 1 lakh, it has decreased to 70,000 now as schools and colleges are shut. Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (NMPML), the transport wing of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), has also diverted 20 buses to routes like Trimbakeshwar, Dindori, Sinnar, and Mohadi in rural areas. The civic officials stated that the daily earnings from ticket sales, which averaged around Rs 30 lakh, have now dropped to Rs 25 lakh per day. The transport wing operates 246 buses on 52 routes across the city through two private agencies from two bus depots — Tapovan and Nashik Road. Students receive bus passes at concessional rates and use city buses to reach schools and colleges. Last month, NMPML reduced the frequency of buses on six of the 52 routes after the drop in student footfall due to the summer vacation. The transport wing of the NMC also reduced 130 bus trips on these six routes until the summer vacation ends on June 15. NMC officials mentioned they have deployed around 20 buses on various routes in rural areas, including Sinnar, Dindori, Pimpalgaon, Saikheda, Ozar, Mohadi, and other rural destinations. "We will restore our routes after the summer vacation of schools and colleges is over, from June 15," added officials. NMPML is operating the city bus service through two private agencies. Both agencies have procured 250 buses, including 200 CNG and 50 diesel buses, and are responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing the city buses. NMPML pays the agencies on a per-kilometre basis.
