Jawan among 2 held for Pak spying, DGP says incriminating evidence seized

1 2 3 Amritsar: Amritsar rural police have apprehended two men, including a serving jawan in the Indian Army, for alleged involvement in espionage activities linked to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) , said Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday. Yadav said they had seized incriminating evidence from the arrested accused, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Foji and Sahil Masih alias Shali. A preliminary investigation revealed that Gopy Foji was in direct contact with ISI operatives and allegedly shared sensitive information through pen drives. Police have seized two mobile phones from the accused, suspected to have been used for communication with Pakistani handlers. Police have identified the key ISI handler involved in the case as Rana Javed. "Investigations are underway to identify the full extent of the network and trace all persons associated with these anti-national activities," said the DGP. Amritsar senior superintendent of police (rural) Maninder Singh said Gopy Foji was recruited into the Indian Army in 2016 and systematically exploited his official position to collect, store, and transmit classified military information via pen drives and discs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NOVA Android Pro 14 Tablet 10,1 inča Allress Saznajte više Undo The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal in Gurdaspur district, who introduced Gopy Foji to ISI operatives five months ago, he said. Since then, Gopy Foji was actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations. The SSP said in lieu of this espionage activity, Gopy Foji had been receiving monetary compensation through a complex financial network involving intermediary bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign associates to evade detection. In an intelligence-led operation, police teams arrested Gopy Foji and Shali when they were attempting another handover of sensitive data, SSP said. The police official added they were carrying out an investigation to unravel the wider nexus and identify additional conspirators, domestic and abroad. The SSP said a case had been registered under sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Lopoke police station. MSID:: 122005827 413 |
