Uttam Reddy slams BRS over irrigation project neglect, announces major restoration measures

Hyderabad, June 28 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday strongly condemned what he termed as false propaganda by BRS leaders regarding the condition of old irrigation projects like Jurala and Manjeera. He blamed the current issues on the decade-long negligence by the previous BRS regime, which failed to carry out even basic maintenance. Highlighting the Congress government's commitment, he said Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had sanctioned Rs 100 crore for an alternative bridge to safeguard the Jurala dam from heavy vehicular load, and that there was no real threat to the structure. He dismissed concerns over stroke gates and ropes as baseless and politically motivated. Reddy announced Rs 300 crore for a second gantry crane at Jurala, systematic desiltation, and additional works at Rayalampadu and Mallammakunta reservoirs. The Nettampadu project, pending since BRS rule, has now been cleared with revised estimates of Rs 2,753 crore and is targeted for completion by December. He further accused the previous government of focusing on high-cost projects like Kaleshwaram for commissions while ignoring existing assets. Inspections at Jurala revealed no major safety concerns, and maintenance work is ongoing to ensure readiness before peak monsoon. The Minister reaffirmed the Congress government's commitment to reviving irrigation projects across Telangana and ensuring farmer welfare through systematic and transparent governance. UNI VV GNK

Telangana government to rope in two Army officers to oversee tunnel and irrigation works

HYDERABAD: The state government is in the process of roping in two Indian Army officers, renowned for their expertise in tunnel technology, to help the Irrigation department in dealing with tunnel-related and other irrigation works. During a review meeting held here on Wednesday, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy discussed with the officials the process of including the two Army officers in the Irrigation department for this purpose. 'General Harpal Singh, former engineer-in-chief of the Indian Army, has already been invited to join the Irrigation department as an honorary advisor. Colonel Parikshit Mehra, an internationally acclaimed expert in tunnel technologies and construction, will be joining the department in July,' Uttam said. These officers were recently involved in the execution of the Rohtang (Atal Tunnel) and Zojila tunnel projects in the Himalayas. During the meeting, the minister also reviewed the findings of the National Dam Safety Authority on Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. Uttam directed the officials to implement the NDSA's recommendations without delay. He was informed by the officials that the NDSA itself had offered to work as the design consultant for restoration works. Emphasising the urgency of the situation, Uttam sought weekly progress reports and warned that restoration of the project should proceed on a war footing in accordance with the Central Water Commission guidelines. He also reviewed the progress of works on the Singur Canal, where tenders have already been called. Regarding the Dindi project, he was briefed about the ongoing inter-linking coordination and the post-borewell design process. He directed officials to meet the respective district collectors to expedite land acquisition and fast-track project execution.

Cabinet to take a call on Banakacherla today

Hyderabad: The State Cabinet, which is meeting here on Monday, is likely to take a clear stance on the contentious Godavari-Banakacherla link project proposed in the Penna basin by the Andhra Pradesh government. The meeting will deliberate on taking forward the issue in an amicable manner, possibly by way of talks with Andhra Pradesh while underlining water sharing agreements. The Cabinet is also likely to focus on the details of projects that have been provided to the PC Ghose Commission, which has sought details of cabinet approvals for the Kaleshwaram project by the previous BRS government. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy had on June 19 met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil urging him to stop the Banakacherla project. It was alleged that Banakacherla was against natural justice and detrimental to the interests of Telangana. They accused the AP government of violating the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award and the 2014 AP State Reorganisation Act. The Union Minister was urged to reject the pre-feasibility report of the Godavari-Banakacharla project and to ensure justice. Subsequently, Revanth Reddy stated that he was ready for talks with his AP counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu over the Godavari-Banakacherla project.

Polavaram-Banakacherla project won't affect interests of upstream states, including Telangana: Min Nimmala

VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu on Tuesday dismissed allegations from Telangana leaders regarding the Polavaram-Banakacherla project, asserting that it will not harm upstream States. Addressing a press conference, he clarified that the project will utilise only surplus Godavari floodwater, ensuring no impact on allocated water share for upstream States like Telangana. Making a PowerPoint presentation at the State Secretariat, he highlighted that 3,000 TMC of Godavari water flows unused into the Bay of Bengal annually, with peak flows reaching 50 lakh cusecs. The Polavaram-Banakacherla project aims to divert this excess floodwater to the drought-prone Rayalaseema region. 'We are only planning to use water that would otherwise go waste into the sea,' he asserted, reiterating that the project poses no threat to upstream States. Responding to objections raised by Telangana Water Resources Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who recently urged the Centre to reject the project for allegedly violating the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award, and the AP Reorganisation Act, he called for introspection.

Godavari-Banakacharla project: Uttam calls for all-party MPs' meet today; BJP, BRS members may skip

Hyderabad: Amid growing political slugfest between the government and the opposition parties, state Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy called an all-party MPs meeting on Godavari Banakacharla project at Secretariat on Wednesday. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would attend the meeting as chief guest. Though the minister claimed he invited union ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay along with BJP MPs to the meeting, sources said that the ruling national party's Lok Sabha members and also the union ministers are likely to skip the meeting. The three Rajya Sabha MPs from BRS will also be absent. Uttam said that the state government prepared an action plan to exert pressure on the union government against the Banakacharla project and stall the works. The all party meeting is being convened to seek the other party views and opinions to intensify the fight against Andhra Pradesh. He recalled that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had already raised objections on behalf of the Telangana State Government on this project when he met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi in June. The Union Minister responded and clarified that his ministry has not yet received DPR related to the Godavari-Banakacharla Link Project and assured that he will review taking into account the existing guidelines in water allocation, tribunal judgments, inter-state agreements and the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act. He also cited the demand that the Central Water Commission should withhold the approvals related to this project.
