‘I'm officially a Yankee now': Arva native signs his first professional baseball contract
Blake Gillespie of Arva, Ont. signs his first professional baseball contract with the NY Yankees after being selected in the 9th round of the 2025 MLB Draft. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) On the day Blake Gillespie signed his professional contract, he walked through the player development complex and already got a taste of the big leagues. '[Ryan] Yarborough was there, so I met him,' said Gillespie, speaking via Zoom to CTV News in Tampa, Fla. 'It's super awesome. And obviously very professional. It kind of still feels surreal to me. Like it hasn't all set in, but I'm officially a Yankee now. Once I get into my routine, it'll start to feel more real. Even just today, seeing some big leaguers rehabbing in the training room, just like they're just there, it's super cool.' The ninth-round pick arrived in Tampa Tuesday night and is ready to get to work as a professional Thursday. 'Just getting settled in with all my new coaches and figuring out the development plan for me going forward,' said Gillespie. 'I don't really have a set-in-stone plan, but it's very likely that I just don't pitch for the rest of the year, as I pitched a lot at school. Just going to kind of take this time to get bigger, stronger, work on some stuff and take that into the fall where I may face some hitters. I'll build toward Spring Training but probably not going to be pitching anywhere this year.' Blake Gillespie Blake Gillespie of Arva, Ont. is now a NY Yankees prospect after being selected in the 9th round of the 2025 MLB Draft. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) The Medway High School grad had a breakout season with the University of Charlotte 49ers, including throwing the second no-hitter in program history. In AAC play, Gillespie posted a 1.39 ERA with 84 strikeouts across 64.2 innings, and in the ACC Championship he struck out 13 batters, tying the conference tournament record for most strikeouts by a pitcher in a game. He said he didn't really have a favourite baseball team growing up, but likely was the Toronto Blue Jays being a Canadian. He ended up being selected in the ninth-round of the draft by one of their biggest rivals. Blake Gillespie Blake Gillespie of Lucan, Ont. threw a no-hitter for the Charlotte 49ers on March 7, 2025. (Source: Charlotte Athletics) 'We kind of had a general idea of the rounds but probably went a little later than we're all anticipating, but it's the draft and stuff like that happens,' said Gillespie. 'I'm just super grateful I landed with such a great organization. You can't really predict ahead of time, so I landed with the best one.' The London area has produced more than a dozen big league players, and Gillespie hopes to be next in line. 'That's the dream, so hopefully I can make that come true,' he said.

All 30 Teams Current World Series Odds
All 30 Teams Current World Series Odds originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Every month I dive into 2025's developing World Series odds to take the league's temperature — who sticks out at the price for you? Advertisement THE FAVORITES: LA Dodgers: +280 NY Yankees: +500 PHI Phillies: + 800 NY Mets: + 850 DET Tigers: + 850 Not to be too much of a chalk donkey here but for now at least, it seems the big winner will come this top group. However, paying (+280) for any team to win the World Series in early June is nuts — I don't care how good the Dodgers are. And as much as I love my Yankees, this price feels like a bottom. If you're determined to bet the Bombers to win it all, exercise patience. THE BLOB: CHI Cubs: + 1400 SEA Mariners: + 1700 HOU Astros: + 1800 MIN Twins: + 2000 ATL Braves: + 2800 SD Padres: + 2800 When attacking these broad-view, longshot markets this middle section's usually my Goldilocks spot — where the porridge is just right. These are all teams with promise and a prayer, whose odds could literally get lopped in half with a strong week of play. The Cubs' offense is my favorite in the bunch but I need to see them rectify at least some of their starting pitcher issues before expecting a run deep into October. If Seattle gets their rotation healthy, they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in a best of seven series. I'll be watching this group very closely... Advertisement THE LONGSHOTS: MIA Marlins: + 50000 COL Rockies: + 50000 CHI White Sox: + 50000 BAL Orioles: + 30000 Athletics: + 30000 WAS Nationals: + 30000 PIT Pirates: + 30000 LA Angels: + 30000 CIN Reds: + 20000 BOS Red: + Sox 7000 TOR Blue Jays: + 6000 TEX Rangers: + 6000 STL Cardinals: + 6000 MIL Brewers: + 6000 TB Rays: + 5500 ARI Diamondbacks: + 4500 SF Giants: + 4500 KC Royals: + 4000 CLE Guardians: + 4000 Always the most fun to bet on, dreaming of the monster payout, there's one question to answer honestly. Does this team have the goods to go all the way? That generally entails a couple of front-line starters with a quality bullpen behind them — and at least a competent offense. Though I haven't pulled the trigger on any of these squads yet, I do love the Royals at the price. In the new expanded playoff format you don't need to win your division to capture the trophy — just squeak into the dance and let variance do its thing. NY Yankees announce lineup for Wednesday night game vs San Diego Padres
The New York Yankees conclude a three-game home series with a rubber match for Wednesday night versus the San Diego Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Advertisement The Yankees (20-16) are looking to finish the six-game homestand on a positive note before heading out west to face the Athletics in Sacramento for the first time before taking on the Seattle Mariners. Here's how the lineups look for this evening at Yankee Stadium: NY Yankees vs Padres probable pitchers The Yankees will send Max Fried to the mound for his eighth start this season. The southpaw has been tremendous since signing with the organization this offseason, boasting a 6-0 record with a microscopic 1.01 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. The only instance where the two-time All-Star hasn't earned a victory so far this year was in his Yankees' debut on March 29. Advertisement Fried and fellow left-handed ace Carlos Rodon have easily been the top two pitchers in what's been an injury-prone rotation that is still without Luis Gil and won't have No. 1 starter Gerrit Cole all season after having Tommy John surgery in the weeks leading up to the regular season. On the bump for the Padres will be Dylan Cease. After finishing fourth in NL Cy Young voting in his first season in San Diego in 2024, Cease has gotten off to a slow start this year. He's 1-2 with an unusually high 5.61 ERA across 33 2/3 innings in seven outings. NY Yankees lineup vs Padres Padres lineup vs NY Yankees Check back for more updates...
